The changes are not yet law: the bill is at the Legislative Council Second Reading stage, and the WA Government says the proposed schedule would begin in 2028 if Parliament passes it.
What are the two proposed new public holidays?
Easter Saturday
The bill would make the Saturday before Easter Sunday a public holiday. The WA Government says this would not give Monday-to-Friday workers an additional weekday holiday. Its practical effect would therefore depend on a person’s work pattern, applicable industrial arrangements and the final law. The Government’s public holiday review FAQ describes the proposed treatment.
Show Day
The proposal would add a Show Day public holiday tied to the first Monday of the September/October school holidays. Its exact date would be appointed by proclamation, so no specific date is settled in the proposal. The Government’s outcomes announcement sets out the proposed timing.
How would the existing holidays move?
| Holiday | Current schedule | Proposed schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Labour Day | First Monday in March | Second Monday in March; in most state election years, the third Monday to avoid an election long weekend |
| WA Day | First Monday in June | Second Monday in November |
| King’s Birthday | Late September or early October | Second Monday in June |
These are proposed dates, not the operative schedule. Fair Work Ombudsman’s 2026 public holiday calendar lists the current schedule and does not include Easter Saturday or Show Day as WA public holidays.

Has the bill passed, and when would changes start?
No. The Western Australian Parliament bill tracker lists the Public and Bank Holidays Amendment Bill 2025 at Legislative Council Second Reading. The tracker records introduction in the Legislative Assembly on 18 September 2025, its third reading on 23 October 2025, and introduction in the Legislative Council on 23 October 2025.
The Government proposes that the changes take effect in 2028, allowing time for administrative and industrial arrangements. The Legislative Council second-reading speech described the intended commencement as 1 January 2028; that date is a proposed commencement, not confirmation that the bill has passed. Parliament must complete the legislative process before the changes can take effect. The Legislative Council Hansard for 23 October 2025 contains the commencement wording.
Why does the Government want to change the calendar?
The Government’s 2025 consultation statement said the review aimed to bring WA closer to other states and territories, make scheduling simpler for organisations operating across borders, provide more similar employee benefits, improve the opportunity to celebrate WA Day, and spread public holidays more evenly through the year. It said WA had 11 public holidays and that none of its three state public holidays fell on the same day as a public holiday in another jurisdiction. The statement also said WA and Tasmania were the only jurisdictions that did not observe Easter Saturday as a public holiday. These are claims from the Government’s consultation document, not independent findings. The consultation Regulatory Impact Statement provides the rationale.
For the WA Day move, the statement noted that June is one of Perth’s wettest months and that bad weather had forced partial or full cancellations of WA Day events in the preceding three years. It reported economic impacts of almost $23 million in 2019 and $34 million in 2022, attributing both figures to the Government of Western Australia. Those historical figures describe impacts reported for events; they are not a forecast of the economic effect of moving the holiday. The statement also said CelebrateWA rescheduled its 2025 metropolitan event to November to coincide with spring weather.

As travel context, the statement cited Tourism Research Australia data showing that 30% of interstate trips to WA in the year ending December 2024 were to visit friends and relatives. That statistic does not establish that changing holiday dates will increase travel.

The Government says its four-week consultation ran from 13 July to 8 August 2025 and received over 10,000 submissions. Its August 2025 announcement described preliminary analysis as showing strong support, but did not provide a quantified result in the material cited here. Premier Roger Cook said: “I’m pleased to see that almost 10,000 community members provided feedback to our Public Holiday Review consultation.” The later Government FAQ uses “over 10,000” for the total; the Premier’s quote reflects the wording of the earlier announcement.
