Its final period ended on 14 January 2026, and the WA Government reported 83,764 firearms surrendered through the program. WA Police still operates a separate permanent amnesty for unlicensed firearms and firearm-related items. The 5 August 2024 Up Late with Ben Harvey episode discussed an earlier phase of the scheme; its deadline and compensation discussion are historical, not current offers or instructions.
What happened in the 5 August 2024 episode?
In an article published on 5 August 2024, PerthNow’s Andrew Porter summarized that Monday’s Up Late episode. Ben Harvey discussed the stockpile expected to be destroyed, anticipated effects of Western Australia’s new firearm regulations, whether owners would receive a fair price, and the government’s response to cross-border gun trade. PerthNow’s article reported that 13,000 rifles, 1,800 handguns and 500 shotguns had been handed in, with another 10,000 awaiting decommissioning. Those were figures reported at the time, not a current inventory.
The article also relayed Harvey’s statement that owners of an estimated 70,000 firearms with unresolved status had until 31 August 2024 to hand them in “under the current buyback.” That was a 2024 estimate attributed in the episode article, not an official current count. Its deadline has passed.
How did the buyback change over time?
| Date or period | What happened | Meaning for owners now |
|---|---|---|
| 21 February 2024 | The WA Government opened a $64.3 million voluntary compensation scheme for individual firearm licence holders. It offered up to $1,000 per firearm, depending on type, style, calibre and initial registration date. The original closing date was 31 August 2024 or earlier if funding ran out. WA Government launch announcement | The compensation offer belonged to the original, time-limited phase; it is not a current offer. |
| 5 August 2024 | The WA Government said 19,430 firearms had been removed from the community during the program’s first five months: 1,852 handguns, 4,825 shotguns and 12,753 rifles. WA Government, 2024 | This is a dated milestone, not a competing estimate of the program’s eventual total. |
| 14 April 2025–14 January 2026 | A further buyback period for other firearms returned to WA Police was announced on 1 April 2025. WA Government announcement | This later return period has also ended. |
| 14 January 2026 | The sixth voluntary buyback ended. On 20 January 2026, the WA Government reported a closeout total of 83,764 firearms surrendered through the program. WA Government, 2026 | This is the government’s reported program total at close, not proof of a particular crime or safety effect. |
Is compensation still available?
No. The voluntary buyback that paid compensation is closed. The 2024 offer of up to $1,000 per firearm depended on firearm-specific factors and applied to the scheme then open; it should not be treated as a present-day price, entitlement or promise of payment. Questions about a firearm’s current status or an owner’s obligations should be directed to WA Police Licensing Services.

How is the permanent amnesty different?
WA Police distinguishes the closed funded buyback from its permanent Firearms Amnesty. The amnesty lets members of the public surrender unlicensed firearms or firearm-related items at any WA Police station. It is not a continuing compensation scheme. Follow the current official instructions for the circumstances of your firearm; the existence of the amnesty alone does not establish an individual owner’s legal position or the correct way to transport an item. What do the WA firearm reforms mean for licence holders?
The Firearms Act 2024 and Firearms Regulations 2024 commenced on 31 March 2025. The WA Government’s announcement identified restrictions on firearm numbers, mandatory offences and orders, mandatory safety training, health assessments, and stricter storage requirements. It also said WA Police would contact licence holders before their current licences expired with specific compliance instructions. Those general policy points do not determine an individual’s firearm eligibility, licence conditions or duties. Check the current guidance and any direct instructions from WA Police Licensing Services for your situation. WA Government: new firearm laws commence

What can the reported surrender totals tell you?
The figures show the number of firearms the WA Government said were surrendered at two different points: 19,430 during the first five months, and 83,764 at the program’s final closeout. They do not, by themselves, establish how the scheme affected firearm crime or public safety. The cited announcements report program activity and policy actions, not a measured causal effect.
