On May 4, 2015, vXchnge announced that it had acquired eight data centers from Sungard Availability Services (Sungard AS). The company said the sites expanded its reach for customers needing local data-center capacity for network-enabled applications and cloud services. The transaction’s financial terms were not disclosed in contemporaneous reporting.

Where the acquired data centers were located

Contemporaneous reports placed the eight facilities in these U.S. markets:

  • Portland, Oregon
  • Austin, Texas
  • Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • St. Paul, Minnesota
  • St. Louis, Missouri
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Nashville, Tennessee

After the acquisition, vXchnge reported a North American footprint of 15 geographic markets. Both the market list and that footprint figure describe the companies’ claims in 2015, not present-day locations or capacity. Data Center Knowledge reported the locations and footprint; Data Center Dynamics also reported on the markets.

Why vXchnge said it made the acquisition

vXchnge presented the facilities as local deployment points for customers’ network-enabled applications and cloud services. CEO Keith Olsen said the locations served services requiring “safe, secure and resilient data centers.” That was the company’s stated rationale, rather than an independently measured assessment of the markets or the sites.

The company also said it would retain the operations teams at each location and integrate relevant Sungard AS operations, staff, and customers, with a transition period for affected customers. Those were announced plans; the available contemporaneous sources do not establish whether or how the integration was completed. The company’s May 4 announcement contains Olsen’s statements and its integration plans.

What the transaction does—and does not—establish

The acquisition is a historical expansion of vXchnge’s data-center footprint. The sources do not disclose a purchase price, so the deal’s value cannot be established from contemporaneous reporting. They also do not establish the facilities’ current owner, operator, or service availability. The reported transaction should not be read as evidence that Sungard AS ended its colocation activity; contemporaneous coverage said the company continued to support colocation.

For a reader evaluating a data-center provider today, these 2015 reports cannot confirm whether any of the eight sites remain available or who operates them. Current facility status requires current information from the relevant provider.
