VOO vs. SPY vs. IVV: How to Choose an S&P 500 ETF

VOO, SPY, and IVV target the same S&P 500 benchmark, but their stated expenses, structures, and trading considerations differ. Learn what to compare before choosing.

VOO, SPY, and IVV are all designed to track the S&P 500, so their intended benchmark exposure is broadly similar. Their clearest documented difference is cost: Vanguard’s April 28, 2026 summary prospectus lists VOO’s annual fund operating expenses at 0.03%; iShares lists IVV at 0.03%; and State Street lists SPY’s gross expense ratio at 0.0945%. But a fund fee alone does not determine your actual cost or which ETF fits your needs. Compare the latest fee disclosures, trading costs, broker charges, and—if relevant—fund structure before choosing.

In practical terms, VOO and IVV have the lower stated annual fund expenses in the cited issuer materials, while SPY has a different legal structure and options availability that may matter to some traders. Those are useful starting points, not a universal ranking: spreads, order size, brokerage costs, account details, and investment goals can change what matters most to an individual investor.

What is the difference between VOO, SPY, and IVV?

Each ETF seeks to provide exposure to the S&P 500, a benchmark of large-cap U.S. stocks. Choosing among them does not change the intended benchmark; it changes the fund wrapper, stated expenses, and potentially the costs and practicalities of buying or selling shares.

The S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-cap weighted and spans all eleven GICS sectors, according to State Street’s SPY fund page. That breadth does not eliminate equity-market risk, and it does not make the index a complete portfolio for every investor.

State Street describes SPY’s objective as seeking investment results that, before expenses, generally correspond to the price and yield performance of the S&P 500. The wording is important: the objective is to track the benchmark, not to promise identical results. Fund expenses, trading prices, and tracking differences can all affect an investor’s experience.

ETF Issuer-stated annual expense Structure or trading detail Distribution detail in cited source
VOO 0.03% total annual fund operating expenses, in Vanguard’s summary prospectus dated April 28, 2026. Vanguard describes it as an exchange-traded share class of Vanguard 500 Index Fund; shares trade on NYSE Arca. Not stated in the cited prospectus facts summarized here.
SPY 0.0945% gross expense ratio on State Street’s fund page. Unit investment trust; options are available. State Street says SPY launched in January 1993 and was the first ETF listed in the United States. Quarterly, according to State Street.
IVV 0.03% expense ratio on iShares’ official page. The page reported a 0.01% 30-day median bid-ask spread as of October 7, 2026; this is a dated snapshot, not a permanent trading-cost guarantee. Quarterly, according to iShares.

Fee labels and dates matter: VOO’s figure is identified as total annual fund operating expenses in a prospectus; SPY’s is stated as a gross expense ratio; and the figures come from issuer materials at different dates. Check current prospectuses and fund pages before investing, including any fee waivers or changes. Fund expenses are not the only investor cost: brokerage commissions and execution price impact can also matter.

The word “gross” should not be silently treated as interchangeable with every other fee label. Compare the current disclosures and their definitions, rather than relying on a chart or an old comparison that may use different dates or omit waivers. The stated figures are issuer-reported annual fund-level expenses; they are not personalized estimates of all costs an investor will incur.

How much do the fees amount to?

At the stated annual rates, 0.03% is about $3 per year for each $10,000 invested, while 0.0945% is about $9.45 per year for each $10,000. This simple multiplication illustrates the fund-level rate; it is not a prediction of the exact dollars an investor will pay, since balances and rates can change and other costs are excluded.

On that same simplified basis, the difference between 0.03% and 0.0945% is 0.0645 percentage points, or about $6.45 per year for every $10,000 at a constant balance. At $100,000, that arithmetic would be about $64.50 per year. These are illustrations based only on the cited annual ratios; they do not account for changing asset values, future fee changes, brokerage charges, spread, trade frequency, or taxes. They should not be read as forecasts of ending balances.

Vanguard’s April 28, 2026 summary prospectus provides a standardized illustration for VOO: assuming a $10,000 investment, a 5% annual return, and expenses unchanged, it estimates costs of $3 for one year, $10 for three years, $17 for five years, and $39 for ten years. The prospectus says brokerage commissions are excluded and notes that fees through Vanguard differ from broker fees. This example is specific to its stated assumptions; it should not be treated as an all-in cost estimate for a particular account.

The gap between a 0.03% and a 0.0945% fund expense can be relevant to a long-term holder, but expense ratios alone do not establish an investor-specific total cost or after-tax ranking. A lower stated fee also does not guarantee a higher realized return.

For an investor who buys once and holds for a long time, an annual difference can accumulate because fund expenses are ongoing. Still, it is not possible to calculate a dependable personal savings figure from the stated ratio alone: the value invested changes, fee disclosures may change, and the trade itself may incur costs. For an investor who trades often, even a small execution-cost difference may be relevant alongside the annual expense ratio. The cited fund materials do not establish a directly comparable all-in personal cost for the three funds.

How to choose among the three ETFs

  1. Confirm the exposure you want. All three are designed around the S&P 500. If you want a different asset mix or a broader portfolio, choosing between these tickers will not address that separate allocation decision.
  2. Compare current fund expenses. Verify each fund’s latest prospectus or official fund page. Note whether the fee is described as gross, net, or total annual operating expenses, and check for waivers or changes.
  3. Estimate your trading costs. Check the current bid-ask spread and trading activity around the time you expect to trade. Compare them with your intended order size and include any commission or other broker charge. A spread or volume reading on one date is not a permanent liquidity ranking.
  4. Consider structure and use. SPY is a unit investment trust and has listed options, according to State Street. That may be a practical distinction for someone considering options, but the existence of options does not make SPY suitable for any particular strategy. VOO’s prospectus describes its ETF shares as a share class of Vanguard 500 Index Fund.
  5. Apply your own account and circumstances. Taxes, residency, account type, investment horizon, risk tolerance, and the rest of your portfolio can affect the decision. The cited fund materials do not determine which ETF is best for an individual’s situation.

For a long-term investor who expects to hold shares, the stated annual fund expense is one relevant comparison. For someone making frequent or large trades, execution conditions and broker-specific charges may deserve more attention. Neither consideration predicts future performance or replaces a personal assessment of investment needs.

A useful way to apply the sequence is to separate the decision into two questions. First, is S&P 500 exposure appropriate for the role you want this investment to play? Second, once that exposure is established, which fund’s current expenses, trading conditions, and structure fit your own circumstances? The first question is about portfolio allocation; the second is about choosing between funds with the same intended benchmark.

If the only meaningful difference for your circumstances is the stated annual fund expense, the lower stated rate is a relevant consideration, especially over a longer holding period. But this does not make VOO or IVV automatically best for everyone: the cited sources do not supply your broker’s fees, your expected execution price, tax position, or full portfolio context. Likewise, SPY’s options availability is relevant only if options access is part of your actual use case.

Trading costs: spreads, volume, and order execution

The expense ratio is charged at the fund level; it is not the same as the cost of executing a trade. The bid-ask spread is the difference between the price buyers are offering and the price sellers are asking. A market order can execute at the available price, which may differ from the displayed midpoint. Larger orders can also have price impact, depending on market conditions.

Use live or current data rather than treating a published snapshot as a standing comparison. iShares reported IVV’s 0.01% 30-day median bid-ask spread as of October 7, 2026. State Street’s SPY page included market information dated October 7–8, 2026. These dates describe the sources’ reported data, not a guarantee of what a future trade will cost. The cited materials do not establish a directly comparable all-in trading cost for every investor or order size.

  • Check the live bid and ask shortly before placing an order.
  • Look at trading activity in context of your order rather than relying on one day’s volume as a permanent liquidity ranking.
  • Include your broker’s commissions or other transaction charges, if any.
  • For a sizable order, consider how execution method and order size may affect the achieved price.

Spread and volume are not fixed attributes that can be reduced to a timeless “most liquid” label. They change with trading conditions, and a published spread figure has a particular measurement method and date. For IVV, the cited 0.01% figure is a 30-day median spread on October 7, 2026; it is not a promise that every trade will have that spread. State Street’s SPY market information is also dated, so it should be checked again when a trade is planned.

When comparing your likely costs, match the information to your own transaction. A small one-time purchase and a large order are not necessarily exposed to the same price impact. A commission-free trade, if your broker offers one, would not by itself mean the trade has no cost: the spread and execution price still matter. Conversely, a fund’s annual expense ratio does not tell you how much a particular purchase or sale will cost to execute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an investor making regular purchases, it can be useful to assess the brokerage’s rules for recurring investments and any applicable charges, then consider the fund’s ongoing expense separately. For a frequent trader, the spread, order execution, and broker charges may recur more often. The cited fund materials do not provide rates for individual brokers or a formula to rank personal trading costs, so check your own brokerage’s current terms.

What the fund structures mean

SPY: unit investment trust

State Street identifies SPY as a unit investment trust, says it launched in January 1993, and describes it as the first ETF listed in the United States. The fund page also states that options are available. These are structural and market-access facts, not a recommendation or evidence that a particular options strategy is appropriate.

For someone who does not use options, SPY’s options availability may not be a deciding factor. For someone who does, it is one relevant feature to investigate, but the mere existence of listed options says nothing about whether a strategy matches that investor’s risk tolerance, objectives, or experience. The cited sources do not support a recommendation for any specific options trade.

VOO: ETF share class

Vanguard’s summary prospectus describes VOO as an exchange-traded share class of Vanguard 500 Index Fund. It says individual investors buy and sell shares on the secondary market at market prices, and the shares are listed on NYSE Arca.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because ETF shares trade on an exchange, their market price can differ from the fund’s net asset value. Vanguard warns that disruptions, volatility, or a limited active market can contribute to trading at a premium or discount. The share-class description and listing venue explain what the prospectus says about VOO’s structure and trading; they do not remove market-price risk.

IVV

iShares’ official page identifies IVV as an S&P 500 ETF and reports its expense ratio, distribution frequency, and dated trading metrics. The source facts summarized here do not establish a structural comparison for IVV beyond those details, so do not infer one from the fee or spread figures.

What does “tracking the S&P 500” mean?

The shared benchmark makes the three tickers comparable, but “designed to track” should not be mistaken for “will exactly equal.” State Street’s objective is stated before expenses, while Vanguard specifically warns that VOO may not match index performance and identifies tracking-error risk. Expenses and the costs of buying and selling shares also mean an investor’s realized result may differ from the index’s return.

Accordingly, do not select a fund on the assumption that its return will equal the index in every period. The cited sources support the broad point that all three seek S&P 500 exposure; they do not establish a current, directly comparable tracking-difference ranking among them. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results, and a lower expense ratio by itself cannot settle which ETF will deliver the best realized outcome.

Risks that apply even when the funds track the same index

These ETFs represent U.S. large-cap equity exposure. Their holdings and results can fall when the broader stock market declines; spreading exposure across sectors does not remove that market risk. An S&P 500 fund may be a core holding for some portfolios, but it is not automatically diversified across all asset classes, geographies, or investment goals.

Vanguard’s prospectus warns that VOO may not match index performance and identifies tracking-error risk. It also cautions that ETF shares can trade above or below net asset value (NAV), particularly amid market disruption, volatility, or a limited active market. Past performance does not indicate future performance. Do not assume that any of these ETFs will deliver exactly the index return after expenses and trading frictions.

Index breadth and portfolio completeness are different questions. The benchmark covers all eleven GICS sectors, but it remains a U.S. large-cap stock index. It is not a guarantee against losses, and the cited materials do not establish that it is sufficient for an individual investor’s full financial plan. Whether an investor needs other asset classes or geographic exposure depends on personal goals and circumstances, which are not answered by comparing these three tickers alone.

Taxes, distributions, and personal suitability

SPY and IVV’s cited official pages list quarterly distributions. Distribution frequency by itself does not establish a tax outcome, and the cited sources do not support a head-to-head after-tax ranking or a claim that one fund is tax-superior. Tax treatment depends on factors such as jurisdiction, account type, and an investor’s circumstances. VOO’s distribution frequency is not established by the cited facts here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use the quarterly schedule listed for SPY and IVV as a shortcut for comparing taxes or total return. Frequency alone does not answer how a distribution will be taxed for a particular investor, and the cited sources do not provide a head-to-head after-tax analysis. Similarly, the fact that two funds report the same expense ratio does not establish that their after-tax outcomes are identical.

No universal “best” ticker can be selected without knowing the investor’s broker, account, order size, tax situation, time horizon, and portfolio needs. For tax-specific or individualized investment advice, consult a suitably qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VOO, SPY, and IVV?

All three are designed to provide exposure to the S&P 500. The cited issuer materials list annual fund expenses of 0.03% for VOO and IVV and a 0.0945% gross expense ratio for SPY. SPY is identified as a unit investment trust and has options available; Vanguard describes VOO as an exchange-traded share class of Vanguard 500 Index Fund. Trading costs and personal circumstances can also matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which S&P 500 ETF should I choose?

There is no universal best choice in the cited fund materials. First decide whether S&P 500 exposure fits your portfolio, then compare current fund expenses, spreads, trading activity, broker charges, and any structural feature relevant to how you invest. Taxes, account type, order size, residency, time horizon, and portfolio needs require individual information.

Is VOO or IVV cheaper than SPY?

In the cited official sources, VOO’s April 28, 2026 prospectus lists 0.03% total annual fund operating expenses, IVV’s page lists 0.03%, and State Street’s SPY page lists a 0.0945% gross expense ratio. These are annual fund-level figures with different labels and source dates. Check current disclosures and remember that they do not include every possible trading cost.

How much does the fee difference matter?

Using the stated rates as a simple illustration, the difference between 0.03% and 0.0945% is about $6.45 a year per $10,000 at a constant balance. Actual costs can vary with balance, fee changes, commissions, execution price, and other circumstances. Vanguard’s prospectus gives a separate VOO example: $3, $10, $17, and $39 over one, three, five, and ten years under its stated $10,000 investment, 5% annual return, and unchanged-expense assumptions; brokerage commissions are excluded.

Does SPY have an advantage for options trading?

State Street says options are available for SPY, and identifies SPY as a unit investment trust launched in January 1993. Options availability may be relevant to a trader considering options, but it does not show that SPY is suitable for a particular strategy or investor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are VOO, SPY, and IVV equally tax-efficient?

The cited sources do not establish a head-to-head tax-efficiency ranking. SPY and IVV are listed as making quarterly distributions, but frequency alone does not determine tax treatment. Taxes depend on jurisdiction, account type, and personal circumstances; the cited fund materials do not support calling one universally tax-superior.

Can these ETFs trade above or below the S&P 500 or their NAV?

ETF market prices can differ from net asset value. Vanguard’s prospectus cautions that VOO shares may trade at a premium or discount, particularly during disruption, volatility, or a limited active market. The prospectus also warns that VOO may not match index performance; none of the funds should be assumed to deliver exactly the index return.

The Bottom Line

VOO, SPY, and IVV share the same intended S&P 500 exposure, but their current fee disclosures, structures, and trading considerations are not identical. The cited materials show 0.03% annual expenses for VOO and IVV and a 0.0945% gross expense ratio for SPY. Use those as a starting point, not a complete cost or suitability ranking: verify the latest disclosures, check your broker’s charges and current execution conditions, and account for your own goals and tax situation. No one ticker is universally best.
