Volvo plans to broaden production at its Ridgeville, South Carolina, plant, adding U.S.-built XC60s from late 2026, an unnamed next-generation hybrid before 2030, and—under a separate 2026 plan—consolidating Polestar 3 production there. Volvo lists the factory’s installed capacity at 150,000 cars a year, but has not disclosed a new investment budget, the added output it expects, or a job total tied to these plans.
What Volvo is changing at its South Carolina plant
The Ridgeville factory, outside Charleston, already produces the fully electric Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3, according to Volvo’s September 23, 2025 announcement. The company described continued investment in the site, but did not specify a new dollar amount. It said it had invested $1.3 billion in the facility over the preceding decade; that is cumulative historical spending, not the budget for the current plans. Volvo Cars, September 23, 2025

When will Volvo start building the XC60 in the U.S.?
Volvo announced in July 2025 that XC60 production at its U.S. plant was scheduled to start in late 2026. That is a planned start date, not confirmation that production has begun. Volvo cited more than 27,000 U.S. XC60 sales in the first eight months of 2025, almost 20% higher year over year, and said more than 2.7 million XC60s were on roads globally. Those figures are company-reported context for the decision, not a forecast of Ridgeville output. The July announcement also said adding production would support and create American manufacturing jobs, but did not give a job count attributable to the plan.
How much can the Ridgeville plant produce?
Volvo states the plant has installed capacity of 150,000 cars per year, a figure reiterated in its March 2026 Polestar 3 announcement. Installed capacity describes the facility’s stated capability; it is not the same as actual annual production. Volvo’s cited releases do not report the plant’s current utilization, actual output, or incremental volume expected from the XC60, hybrid, or Polestar 3 plans. Why Volvo says it is expanding production in the U.S.
Volvo presents the plans as a way to use the plant more fully, support volume and financial growth, and make products closer to the customers and markets they serve. The company also cites regional and export demand and says U.S. manufacturing is strategically important. These are Volvo’s stated objectives; the announcements do not establish the eventual financial return or economic impact.
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson described the U.S. as an important market and a production base for regional and export demand in the March 2026 Polestar 3 announcement. In July 2025, he said the XC60 addition would strengthen the plant’s position and support and create American manufacturing jobs. Neither release provided a job figure tied to the plans.
