Volvo Cars announced a plan in May 2025 to reduce about 3,000 positions worldwide, including consultants. The often-repeated “15%” refers to its global office-based workforce, not all employees. The company said the cuts would primarily affect office roles in Sweden; its public statements cited here do not establish that U.S. workers were specifically targeted or that a separate U.S.-focused round began in 2026.
What does Volvo Cars’ 15% figure mean?
On 26 May 2025, Volvo Cars announced a SEK 18 billion cost-and-cash action plan that included an estimated reduction of around 3,000 positions globally, including consultants. The company described that as around 15% of its total global office-based workforce—not 15% of everyone it employs. Volvo Cars’ 26 May 2025 announcement
The distinction matters: the percentage is not a stated share of factory, retail, or other non-office jobs, nor does it mean that 15% of U.S. employees were to be laid off.
What did Volvo Cars say about Sweden and other markets?
The company said the reductions would primarily affect office-based positions in Sweden. Its announcement estimated around 1,200 employee-held position reductions in Swedish operations and about 1,000 consultant positions, most of them in Sweden. The remaining employee reductions were to be in other global markets. Volvo Cars did not provide a U.S. headcount in the cited announcement. Volvo Cars’ workforce breakdown

These figures describe different parts of the planned reduction: employee-held roles and consultant positions. They should not be read as a country-by-country list of every affected job.
Had the cuts started?
In its Q2 2025 results, Volvo Cars said the planned reduction was going into execution and that approximately 1,100 people had already left the company. The update did not identify their locations, so it cannot show how many departures, if any, were in the United States. Volvo Cars’ Q2 2025 results

At the time of the May announcement, Volvo Cars said it aimed to complete the structural changes during autumn 2025. That was a target, not confirmation that every planned change was completed by then. Volvo Cars’ 26 May 2025 announcement
Did Volvo announce U.S.-specific cuts in 2026?
The cited October 2026 statement does not announce U.S. layoffs. Volvo Cars withdrew its previous full-year 2026 volume and cash-flow outlook, citing weaker-than-expected sales and market conditions, including deteriorating conditions in China and a slower-than-expected recovery in the U.S. It said it would share further actions with its Q3 results on 23 October. That is business context, not evidence that U.S. workers had been targeted for cuts. Volvo Cars’ 2 October 2026 statement

On the available company statements, a separate 2026 U.S.-specific workforce round—and any U.S. job totals or affected roles—remains unverified. The 2025 plan’s global scope and Sweden-focused description do not, by themselves, establish what happened to individual jobs in the United States.
