Yes—but Volkswagen is not charging every EV owner. In the UK, buyers of certain new ID.3 Pro and Pro S trims can pay to raise the car’s listed output from 150kW to 170kW. Volkswagen offers subscription and lifetime-purchase formats; the often-quoted £16.50 monthly and £649 lifetime prices were reported in August 2025 and are not confirmed as today’s prices.
Which Volkswagen ID.3 models are eligible?
Volkswagen UK’s current configurator lists the optional 170kW power upgrade for new ID.3 Pro Essential, Pro Match, Pro S Essential and Pro S Match orders. Those versions are listed at 150kW as standard. The offer is not established here as applying to every ID.3, used cars or other Volkswagen electric models. Check the Volkswagen UK configurator for the trim and order details that apply to a particular car.
The configurator gives the figures in kilowatts. Auto Express reported the same broad comparison in horsepower in August 2025: 201bhp standard and 228bhp after activation. The sources use different units, so the figures are best read as each source reports them rather than as an exact conversion.
What does the extra payment unlock?
It enables the listed higher-power setting: 170kW rather than 150kW on the eligible trims. Auto Express reported Volkswagen’s claim that the upgrade adds 27bhp, raises maximum torque from 265Nm to 310Nm and does not affect range. Those performance and range statements are the manufacturer’s claims as reported by Auto Express, not results of independent testing cited here.

This is described as an optional, fee-based power upgrade. The available information does not establish that new hardware is installed when a customer pays.
How much does the ID.3 power upgrade cost?
Auto Express reported on 14 August 2025 that the UK offer cost £16.50 per month or £649 for lifetime activation. These are dated reported prices, not a live 2026 quote. Volkswagen’s current configurator lists payment formats but sends customers to its In-car Shop or Volkswagen Connect Shop for up-to-date pricing.

There is no reliable break-even calculation using the 2025 prices as if they were current. For a personal comparison, use the prices and terms displayed in Volkswagen’s shop when you buy, and compare the total subscription charges over your intended ownership period with the lifetime price.

Does the upgrade stay with the car when it is sold?
Auto Express reported that its £649 lifetime activation was attached to the vehicle rather than the owner, so it would remain with the car on resale. Volkswagen’s current configurator calls the alternative an outright purchase for the lifetime of the car, but directs buyers to its shop for terms. Verify the current transfer conditions there before relying on resale value.

Volkswagen told Auto Express that the option lets customers choose a sportier driving experience during the vehicle’s life instead of committing to a higher initial purchase price, and said the configurator makes the standard output and option clear. More broadly, Volkswagen said in a 13 September 2021 release that over-the-air updates would support digital business models and let customers order functions as needed. That earlier strategy statement does not, by itself, establish how this particular ID.3 upgrade is delivered technically.
