The share transaction that drew attention in March 2026 was made by Guillemot Brothers Limited, which settled prepaid futures contracts dating from Vivendi’s 2018 exit from Ubisoft. Whether Vivendi holds any Ubisoft shares today is not established by the material reviewed, so neither “Vivendi bought more” nor “Vivendi owns none” can be stated as fact.
What Vivendi actually did in 2018
On March 20, 2018, Ubisoft announced an agreement for Vivendi to sell all 30,489,300 of its Ubisoft shares. Ubisoft described that holding as 27.3% of its share capital. Vivendi’s own release gave 27.27% and a sale value of €2 billion. The two percentages differ only by rounding, but each should be quoted with the precision of its source.
Ubisoft set out three routes for the sale: a share buyback by Ubisoft, a purchase by Guillemot Brothers SE, and a placement with institutional investors. Once the transaction was completed, Vivendi would no longer be a Ubisoft shareholder. Ubisoft’s announcement stated:
“Following the implementation of the transaction, Vivendi will no longer hold any shares in Ubisoft, and has committed not to acquire any shares in Ubisoft for 5 years.” (Ubisoft announcement, March 20, 2018)

What happened in March 2026
The 2026 event is easy to misread. A notice dated March 27, 2026 concerned Ubisoft shares and mentioned the 2018 transaction, but the party named in it is Guillemot Brothers Limited, not Vivendi. The table below sets the two events side by side on the points that matter.
| Point | 2018 transaction | 2026 settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Named party | Vivendi, as seller | Guillemot Brothers Limited |
| Date | Announced March 20, 2018 | Settled at maturity on March 23, 2026; announced March 27, 2026 |
| Type of event | Sale of Vivendi’s entire Ubisoft holding | Physical settlement of two prepaid future contracts entered into in 2018 |
| Shares | 30,489,300 (27.3% per Ubisoft; 27.27% per Vivendi) | 3,030,303 in total (606,061 and 2,424,242) |
| Value | €2 billion (Vivendi release) | Not stated in the notice |
| Stated effect | Vivendi would no longer be a Ubisoft shareholder after completion | No change to the company’s effective economic exposure, according to its notice |
The Guillemot Brothers Limited notice explained the effect of the settlement in these words: “The settlement does not result in a change to Guillemot Brothers Limited’s effective economic exposure in Ubisoft Entertainment SA shares, given the characteristics of the prepaid future contracts.” (Guillemot Brothers Limited announcement, March 27, 2026)

The same notice said the company intended, subject to factors including market conditions and trading windows, to increase its economic interest by buying Ubisoft shares in the near future. It also said it did not intend to cause the Guillemot family concert and Tencent Mobility Limited to exceed 30% of Ubisoft’s capital or voting rights. These are Guillemot Brothers’ statements. They are not statements of Vivendi’s intentions.
What Vivendi’s own 2026 reports show
Vivendi’s two most recent financial releases do not break out a Ubisoft holding. The table below lists what each one reported.

| Vivendi release | Reference date | Figure reported | Ubisoft-specific holding stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-year results, March 12, 2026 | December 31, 2025 | Listed holdings valued at €5.532 billion | No |
| First-half results, September 3, 2026 | June 30, 2026 | Investment portfolio valued at €5.117 billion | No; the summary discussed Gameloft only |
These summaries are not proof that Vivendi holds no Ubisoft shares. A portfolio total that does not name a company is equally consistent with a small holding, a zero holding, or a holding that is grouped with other assets. Only a direct current disclosure would settle the question.

Vivendi’s 2018 commitment not to acquire Ubisoft shares ran for five years from the announcement, which would put its end around March 2023. Its expiry removed that particular contractual restriction. It does not show that Vivendi bought shares afterward. A restriction ending and a purchase happening are separate facts, and the material reviewed establishes only the first.

How to check Ubisoft ownership yourself
- Start at Ubisoft’s investor relations pages and look for shareholding and voting-rights notices. Ubisoft is listed on Euronext Paris under ticker UBI, with ISIN FR0000054470, so these identifiers help when searching regulator and news databases.
- Search the French financial markets regulator’s (AMF) public register for threshold-crossing declarations filed under Vivendi’s name. A declaration is required when a holding crosses a legal threshold, so a holding that is still above a threshold should show up there. Absence of a filing is informative only when you have also checked the dates.
- Read the investments note in Vivendi’s most recent half-year or full-year report. A Ubisoft line appears there only if the company chooses to disclose one.
- Match any headline to its named party before you match it to a date. A settlement by one shareholder, a purchase by another, and a sale by Vivendi are three different events with different effects on ownership.
- Treat aggregator summaries with caution. Confirm any claim of a 2026 Vivendi purchase against the original notice, and if the notice names someone else, the claim is not supported by that notice.
