Corneel Koster became Virgin Atlantic’s CEO on 1 January 2026, succeeding Shai Weiss, who left the airline on 31 December 2025 after seven years as chief executive. Koster had already been a senior leader at the carrier, most recently as Chief Customer and Operating Officer.
When did Shai Weiss leave Virgin Atlantic?
Weiss’s final day as CEO and at Virgin Atlantic was 31 December 2025. He had led the airline since January 2019, after joining as CFO in 2014 and later serving as Chief Commercial Officer. The airline’s succession announcement described his tenure as seven years. Virgin Atlantic’s announcement credited Weiss with guiding the company through the COVID-19 pandemic, completing a transformation and delivering what it called “record performance in 2024.” That performance description is the company’s characterization; the announcement’s cited passage does not give a numerical measure.
Who is Virgin Atlantic’s current CEO?
Corneel Koster took over on 1 January 2026. Virgin Atlantic’s leadership page lists him as CEO, and the company’s 2025 annual report records the change retrospectively. The annual report describes Koster as an integral member of Weiss’s senior team and a natural successor; that is the company and Chair’s assessment.
What experience does Corneel Koster bring?
Koster rejoined Virgin Atlantic in 2019 as Chief Customer Officer. In 2020, his remit expanded to Chief Customer and Operating Officer, the role he held immediately before becoming CEO. Virgin Atlantic credits him with leadership across frontline teams, operations, customer experience, the introduction of its A330neo aircraft and digital operational transformation.

His aviation background also includes senior roles at Delta Air Lines, Aeroméxico and KLM, according to Virgin Atlantic’s biography. The appointment therefore puts a longtime company executive with operational and customer-facing responsibilities at the top of the airline, rather than bringing in an outsider.
What the handover means
The transition keeps leadership within Virgin Atlantic’s existing senior team. That suggests continuity in leadership, but the succession announcement does not set out a new strategy or specific policy changes under Koster. Its emphasis is on his prior operational and customer-experience work, alongside the airline’s transatlantic partnership context.

In the announcement, Virgin Atlantic founder Sir Richard Branson said, “Shai has done an outstanding job over the past seven years.” Weiss said he was leaving “full of pride,” while Koster described taking the CEO role as “an incredible privilege.” These are statements from the participants in the company’s release, not independent evaluations of the handover.
