Reporting from 2022 describes strong early demand and a team adapting to COVID-era restrictions and wine supply disruption. The published evidence shows promising early trading and the operators’ own account of their challenges. It does not show current revenue, profitability, or whether the bar has kept growing.
What Vinotto is and where it sits
Vinotto is a Mediterranean-influenced wine bar in Swanbourne’s Claremont Crescent precinct. Broadsheet’s opening coverage, published 30 March 2022 and updated 19 May 2022, describes a split-level room for 55 people, a small-plate format, and a compact Ooni pizza oven used for flatbreads. The menu also included a considered range of non-alcoholic drinks alongside wine and other alcohol. These details describe the venue as it opened in 2022, not necessarily as it operates now.
Opening in 2022: the timeline
- Late March 2022: Vinotto opened. Broadsheet reported that it was a 55-person wine bar and described strong demand on the first trading day, with capacity reached shortly after 4pm.
- 2 June 2022: PerthNow’s Western Suburbs coverage by Pip Waller reported on the opening. It named Community Coffee Co owners Michael Roach, Laurence Greenfield and Phil Arnold as the creators of the venue, and identified chef Justin Wong and venue manager and sommelier Caitlin Johnston as the creative leads.
- 17 October 2022: Business News published Lucy Anderson’s interview with Johnston about the bar’s neighbourhood focus, small producers, seasonal menu and wine list.
- 10 March 2025: PerthNow published Melinda Webster’s restaurant review, which described the wine list, food, prices, hours and booking availability as they were on that date.
The COVID-era challenges, as the team described them
The June 2022 PerthNow report is the main source for the operating conditions at opening. It states that the venue opened under COVID-era restrictions, including mandatory vaccination requirements and capacity limits. It also reports railway closures across Australia as a source of wine supply problems for the bar.
Wong put the challenge in his own terms: “But there’s definitely been challenges opening a bar during COVID, so Caitlin and I had to try and be as prepared as we could be for curve balls.” He also said about half of the wine came from eastern Australia, and that the team responded to supply difficulties in part by buying locally. The half-of-the-wine figure is Wong’s estimate at the time, not a measured or independently published sourcing breakdown, and it should not be read as a current one.

These restrictions and supply problems belonged to the opening period. Nothing in the 2022 reporting says they remain in effect, and readers should not assume they do.
Adaptations versus conditions
The 2022 coverage separates what the operators faced from what they did about it. The table below sets out the two side by side, with the source and date for each entry.

What “continues to thrive” can and cannot support
The phrase “thrive” rests on two kinds of evidence, and both are contemporary observations. The first is the team’s own account. Wong told PerthNow that the bar had been consistently busy since March, and he linked that demand to local interest in a small, approachable venue: “There’s been a really nice demand for a venue of this style, something that is small, neighbourhood-ly and approachable.” The second is Broadsheet’s report that the bar reached capacity on its first day.
Neither is an audited business result. No revenue, profit, occupancy rate or long-term survival figure for Vinotto appears in the coverage reviewed. The 2022 reports show early momentum and an operator’s description of coping with disruption. They do not show that the bar has sustained that momentum through the years since.

The 2025 review is the most recent independent description of the venue. It describes a trading business with a booking system and a wine list, but it is a single reviewer’s experience on one date. It does not measure performance.
The concept: small plates, wine and a neighbourhood focus
Johnston described Vinotto in October 2022 as “a neighbourhood wine bar with a strong focus on delivering good snacks and good wine.” In that interview she described a seasonal menu with Mediterranean references, and a wine list split roughly evenly between Australian producers and favourites from Italy, Greece, France, Germany and Austria, with a focus on smaller producers.
The dishes she named in 2022 were Fremantle herring on toast, Messina-style fish, vegetarian peperonata with truffle potatoes, and chocolate semifreddo. These were the menu items at that time. They are not a guide to what is on the menu now.
PerthNow’s March 2025 review describes a low-intervention wine list weighted toward old-world wines, along with seasonal snacks and share plates. Its prices and specific dishes were the reviewer’s observations on that date. For current prices and offerings, check the venue directly.

How to read the Vinotto story
- Opening conditions are historical. The vaccination requirements, capacity limits and railway-related wine shortages were reported in June 2022 as part of the opening period.
- Sourcing figures are attributed. The “about half from eastern Australia” figure is the chef’s account from 2022.
- “Busy” is the team’s account. Demand at opening is supported by Broadsheet’s report of reaching capacity; ongoing demand is supported only by the operators’ statements in 2022.
- Current details need current sources. Hours, menus and prices should be taken from the official site, not from the 2022 or 2025 articles.
Vinotto’s opening is a well-documented example of a new neighbourhood bar operating through restrictions and supply problems and reporting strong early demand. It is not evidence of its long-term financial performance, and the coverage available does not provide that.
