The Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) is the low-cost Vanguard fund behind the headline. The Motley Fool reported that Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron, AMD, Intel, and Lam Research together represented 32.4% of VGT, compared with 14.8% of VOO. Those are article-reported figures, and the exact holdings date is not established. Vanguard’s later-dated June 30, 2026 VGT fact sheet lists the same six companies at a combined 33.5%.

That difference matters: the percentages are snapshots, not fixed features of either ETF. VGT is an information-technology sector fund, not a semiconductor-only fund; VOO tracks the broad S&P 500. The choice is therefore about sector concentration versus broad-market exposure, as well as fees.

What the 32.4% and 14.8% figures mean

The Motley Fool article published October 5, 2026 reported that six companies—Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron, AMD, Intel, and Lam Research—made up 32.4% of VGT and 14.8% of VOO. Its accessible headline and search-result summary do not establish the holdings measurement date, so these figures should be treated as that article’s snapshot rather than current or permanent weights. The Motley Fool’s article.

Vanguard’s VGT fact sheet dated June 30, 2026 provides a separate dated snapshot. It lists the following individual weights; together they total 33.5% of VGT’s assets on that date.

Company VGT weight, June 30, 2026
Nvidia 16.2%
Micron 5.1%
Broadcom 3.9%
AMD 3.7%
Intel 2.4%
Lam Research 2.2%
Combined 33.5%

The six-company total in Vanguard’s June snapshot is 1.1 percentage points higher than the article’s 32.4% figure. Because the article’s underlying measurement date is not established, the two totals cannot be treated as simultaneous or as evidence of a change over a known period. Holdings weights can move as share prices and index constituents change. Vanguard’s VGT fact sheet.

VGT and VOO track different parts of the market

VGT seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index. Vanguard says it uses passive full replication when possible. It is an information-technology sector ETF, whose holdings include software, hardware, communications equipment, and other IT businesses as well as semiconductor companies.

Rank #2

VOO is designed to track the S&P 500, an index of large U.S. companies across sectors. The six-company comparison therefore describes a concentrated group within each fund, not equivalent investment mandates: VGT focuses on information technology, while VOO spreads exposure across the broad large-cap U.S. market. Vanguard’s official VOO product page gives its fund objective.

Fees: VOO is cheaper by 0.06 percentage points

Vanguard’s VGT fact sheet reports a 0.09% expense ratio as of June 30, 2026. Vanguard’s VOO product-page search result reports a 0.03% expense ratio as of April 28, 2026. The difference is 0.06 percentage points. As a simple annual illustration, that gap equals $6 per $10,000 invested, assuming the balances stay constant and excluding any other costs or changes in expenses.

ETF Expense ratio Source date
VGT 0.09% June 30, 2026; Vanguard fact sheet
VOO 0.03% April 28, 2026; Vanguard product-page search result

The figures come from different dates, and expense ratios can change. A lower fee is one cost advantage, not a conclusion about which fund fits a particular investor: the funds provide materially different market exposure.

VGT’s sector focus comes with greater concentration risk

On June 30, 2026, VGT’s ten largest holdings represented 60.1% of its net assets, according to Vanguard. That is a substantial concentration in a relatively small number of companies, even though VGT holds more than only the six firms in the headline. Vanguard reports 321 stocks in the fund on that date.

Vanguard cautions that “Sector ETF products are subject to sector risks and non-diversification risks, which may result in performance fluctuations that are more extreme than fluctuations in the overall stock market.” A technology-sector downturn or sharp move in a few large holdings can therefore affect VGT more than a diversified broad-market fund. This is a risk description, not a prediction of future returns.

How to decide between VGT and VOO

  • Choose based on exposure, not the headline alone. VGT is built around information technology; VOO tracks the S&P 500 across sectors.
  • Consider concentration. VGT’s six named semiconductor-related companies made up 33.5% of assets in Vanguard’s June 30, 2026 fact sheet, and its top ten holdings were 60.1%. The article’s 14.8% VOO figure is attributed to The Motley Fool and has no verified measurement date in the accessible material.
  • Compare fees using dated figures. The reported expense ratios are 0.09% for VGT as of June 30, 2026 and 0.03% for VOO as of April 28, 2026.
  • Check current fund disclosures before investing. Holdings and expenses may change; consult the latest Vanguard fact sheet and product information for each ETF.

Vanguard also notes in the VGT fact sheet that past performance is not a guarantee of future results. The holdings and fee data describe the cited dates; they do not establish how either ETF will perform.
