Yes—the headline was based on a real Verizon Up promotion, but it was published on September 1, 2023. The $3 and $5 retailer offers reported then are not verified as available today. Current Verizon customers should open the official My Verizon app and check the offers shown for their own account, including myAccess and Verizon Shine. Do not rely on an old retailer list, claim code or social-media link.
What the original Verizon $5 gift-card story actually said
Droid Life reported on September 1, 2023, that some Verizon Up members were seeing limited-quantity $3 and $5 gift-card-style offers in the My Verizon app. The retailers named were Bass Pro Shops, Lands’ End, Cabela’s, Barnes & Noble and AMC Theatres. The same article also mentioned unrelated discounts, including Verizon Stream TV and Sony or ASTRO products; those were not all free gift cards. See the original report at Droid Life.

The report described what the writer saw in Verizon Up at that time, not a permanent Verizon-wide benefit. Supplies could run out, offers could be targeted, and the specific inventory should not be treated as a live 2026 promotion. Verizon’s loyalty branding and app navigation have also changed since then.
Where Verizon customers should look now
Verizon currently presents customer rewards through several programs. The offer you see depends on your account, location, role and the individual promotion’s terms.

myAccess: personalized account offers
In the current My Verizon app, the usual path is:
- Open My Verizon and tap Me.
- Scroll to My savings & benefits.
- Select myAccess.
- Review Account Offers and Anytime Deals.
- Open an offer to read its eligibility, expiration and redemption instructions, then follow the claim or purchase steps.
- Look in the claimed-deals wallet or equivalent section for saved promotions.
On the website, Verizon’s FAQ describes the path as Account > myAccess. Labels can vary by app version, platform and account, so an absent “Verizon Up” tab does not by itself mean your account has no rewards. Current details are in Verizon’s myAccess FAQs.
Verizon Shine: drops and giveaways
Verizon Shine is aimed at daily drops, giveaways, tickets, merchandise and occasional gift-card opportunities. Participation is through My Verizon, and availability can change quickly. Verizon describes the program on its loyalty and rewards page and in its Shine terms.

Verizon Dollars: earned rewards, not a giveaway
Verizon Dollars are a separate balance earned through eligible activity. Verizon’s current terms say eligible customers can earn 3% of the total monthly Verizon Mobile bill when the bill is paid in full and on time, subject to the program rules. Verizon says the current terms took effect June 16, 2026, with earning beginning on bills dated July 1, 2026 and later. Non-Verizon Visa cardholders’ dollars generally expire after 12 months on a rolling basis. They have no cash value and are not transferable. Redemption options can include participating-merchant gift cards, Verizon products, accessories and hotels, as listed by Verizon. Check the Verizon Dollars terms and FAQ for the rules that apply to your account.
Free app offer, Verizon Dollars or promotion card?

| Reward type | Requires a purchase or qualifying action? | Where to look | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shine daily drop | Not necessarily; follow the individual terms | My Verizon app | Giveaways, tickets, merchandise or occasional gift cards; supplies and timing vary |
| myAccess offer | Depends on the offer | My Verizon app or Verizon website | Personalized discounts or promotions; some claimed rewards expire 30–60 days after claiming |
| Verizon Dollars | Eligible bill-payment activity | My Verizon app | An earned balance with program restrictions, expiration and listed redemption choices |
| Device or account promotion reward | Usually yes | My Verizon, email or Verizon Rewards Center | A Verizon Gift Card, virtual prepaid Mastercard or third-party card after required actions are completed |
A promotion card tied to a phone, added line or home-internet offer is not “free” in the same sense as an app giveaway. It may require buying a device, keeping a qualifying plan, returning an eligible device or meeting another condition. Verizon explains these offers through its mobile reward-card guidance and device-rebate FAQ.
Eligibility and limits
- Offers are often personalized; another Verizon customer may see different deals or none at all.
- myAccess is generally for U.S. residents age 18 or older with an active standard monthly Verizon mobile account in good standing. Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are excluded under the stated basic eligibility rules.
- Account Offers generally require the account owner or account manager. Anytime Deals may be available to other lines on a qualifying account.
- A promotion can disappear when inventory is exhausted, the claim window closes or the offer is withdrawn.
- Some myAccess rewards expire 30–60 days after claiming, depending on the reward. Check the specific expiration date rather than assuming a standard period.
- Retailer rules may limit online versus in-store use, minimum purchases, transaction count or account holder use.
- A reward connected to a device or plan can be revoked or become ineligible if you return the device, cancel service or change a qualifying plan.
If you cannot see the offer
- Confirm you are signed in to the correct My Verizon account and phone number, especially if you have separate mobile and Fios accounts.
- Check both myAccess and Verizon Shine, plus account notifications and Verizon email.
- Update the app, sign out and back in, and verify that your account is current and in good standing.
- Check your account role. An offer limited to an owner or manager may not appear on another line.
- Read the terms for inventory limits, geographic restrictions and claim deadlines.
Because offers are targeted and time-limited, customer service may not be able to add an offer that is absent from your account. App labels can also differ from the 2023 Verizon Up instructions; later coverage tracks the program’s changing branding at Droid Life’s Verizon Up archive.

- Verizon Prepaid $40 Pin Code (not for Postpaid Verizon service)
- Pay and use as you go. No added fees, No annual Contract
If you claimed a reward but cannot use it
- Check the expiration date and whether the code is single-use.
- Confirm the retailer and whether online, in-store or both redemption methods are allowed.
- Look for minimum-purchase, product or geographic restrictions.
- Determine whether the item is a gift card, coupon or discount code; they do not have identical rules.
- Keep the confirmation, code or PIN, screenshots of the terms and any delivery email.
The 2023 Verizon Up report described a code-and-PIN delivery, but current offers may use a claimed-deals wallet, email or another redemption flow. Do not assume every new offer will follow that old process.
How to avoid fake Verizon reward links
Open My Verizon directly rather than using a link in an unsolicited text, email or social-media post. A legitimate Verizon reward should not require an “unlock” fee. Do not provide a payment-card number for verification, a gift-card number or PIN, your password, a one-time security code or remote access to your device. If the promotion is not visible after signing in through the official app or Verizon website, treat the message as suspicious.
Best Value
- Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Bottom line
The “bunch of free $5 gift cards” headline was legitimate as a description of a September 1, 2023 Verizon Up report. It does not establish that Bass Pro Shops, Lands’ End, Cabela’s, Barnes & Noble or AMC offers are available now. In 2026, check your own My Verizon account—especially myAccess and Verizon Shine—and distinguish one-off giveaways from earned Verizon Dollars and purchase-based promotion cards before trying to redeem anything.
