Verizon lists 36 monthly installments for several device categories and is using 36-month financing in current offers. The available terms do not establish that the company recently made 36 months its universal term: check your own device-payment agreement and promotion before assuming how long you will pay or what happens if you leave early.
What Verizon’s 36-month terms cover
Verizon’s device-payment FAQ lists 36 monthly installments for smartphones, tablets, mobile hotspots, laptops, basic phones, and smartwatches. It directs customers to their agreement and first bill for the exact payment amount. Verizon also used a 36-month interest-free payment plan in an iPhone 18 Pro offer described in a September 2026 announcement. That is evidence of a current offer, not proof of a new companywide rule. Verizon Support’s undated video transcript offers an illustration: a $799.99 retail price split into 36 payments of around $22 a month. It is an example, not a current quote for any specific phone. Device financing is separate from wireless service
When financing a device, customers agree to both a device-payment agreement and a wireless customer agreement. They are separate obligations. If you disconnect the line associated with the device, Verizon says the remaining device balance may be billed. How promotional bill credits affect the real cost
Some discounts arrive as monthly bill credits rather than as an upfront reduction to the device price. The promotion’s terms determine how long credits last and what you must do to receive them. Verizon says paying off a device early ends its monthly promotional credits. Credits may also stop if you move to a nonqualifying plan or otherwise stop meeting that offer’s eligibility conditions. Before treating a promotional price as the device’s guaranteed total cost, check the offer for the required plan and line, credit amount and duration, and the consequences of early payoff, plan changes, or disconnection. These conditions vary by offer; the existence of a credit does not establish that every customer or device qualifies.

What an early upgrade requires
Verizon’s posted early-upgrade terms require a qualifying device financed under a 36-month agreement, a new device financed under another 36-month agreement, and the return of the old device within 30 days. The returned device must meet the program’s condition requirements. If it is not returned in acceptable working condition, the remaining balance on the old agreement may be due on the next bill. An early upgrade is therefore not simply permission to stop paying for the old device: eligibility and the return requirement matter, and the new device starts a new payment agreement.

Alternatives to financing through Verizon
Verizon’s materials recognize bringing a device bought from a third-party seller, and say most offers allow either monthly payments or full-retail payment, subject to each offer’s details. Buying outright or bringing your own device can avoid a Verizon device-payment balance, but a specific promotion may require Verizon financing or a qualifying plan. Compare the device’s total price and payment duration alongside the service and promotion requirements. A lower advertised price may rely on credits spread over time, while paying off early or changing plans can affect those credits.

- Total device price: Compare the retail price with the amount you expect to pay after eligible credits.
- Monthly payment and duration: Confirm the amount and number of installments in the agreement and first bill.
- Plan and line requirements: Check which plan, active line, or other conditions the promotion requires.
- Early changes: Review what happens to credits and any remaining balance if you pay off early, change plans, disconnect, or upgrade.
- Device ownership and return: Determine whether you keep the device or must return it to qualify for an upgrade or offer.
- Bring-your-own-device compatibility: Confirm the device works on Verizon’s network and that the deal does not require Verizon financing.
