Verizon announced on November 20, 2025, that it would begin reducing its workforce by more than 13,000 employees. That is the date behind the 13,000-plus headline—not a new October 2026 announcement. The company also said it would reduce outsourced and other outside labor expenses.
Is Verizon laying off 13,000 employees?
Verizon said it would begin reducing its workforce by more than 13,000 employees across the organization. The Associated Press reported that the cuts represented about 20% of Verizon’s management workforce, which AP described as nonunion. That percentage applies to management—not to Verizon’s entire workforce—and does not mean all affected employees had the same employment status. When did Verizon announce the layoffs?
Verizon made the announcement on November 20, 2025. It is distinct from further workforce actions reported in 2026, which have different scopes and should not be added to the original 13,000-plus announcement.
Why did Verizon say it was cutting jobs?
CEO Dan Schulman said Verizon’s cost structure constrained its ability to invest in its customer value proposition and that the company needed to simplify operations. Verizon also said it would significantly reduce outsourced and other outside labor expenses. Those are the company’s stated reasons, not independently established causes. CNA, citing Reuters, reported that Verizon said the cuts were not the result of its use of AI. The same report said Verizon expected more than 80% of affected employees to leave the following month; that was a forecast reported in 2025, not a verified final departure count. CNA also reported an expected fourth-quarter severance charge of $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion, rather than a confirmed final cost. CNA’s report, citing Reuters, covers those estimates.
What support did Verizon announce for departing workers?
Verizon said it established a $20 million Reskilling and Career Transition Fund for departing employees. The company described the fund’s focus as skill development, digital training, and job placement. Its announcement does not specify eligibility rules or application steps, nor does it confirm whether the fund remains available. Employees seeking help should verify current access directly with Verizon or the relevant employer contact rather than assume they qualify.

How are the later 2026 actions different?
July 2026: retail and corporate restructuring
Reuters reported that Verizon planned to sell 274 company-owned retail locations and cut about 500 corporate jobs. The changes affected roughly 3,000 retail and corporate employees overall. Reuters also noted that about 70% of employees at previously sold retail locations took jobs with the new store operators. These figures describe a separate 2026 restructuring, not a revision to the November 2025 reduction. Reuters reported the July 2026 restructuring.
September 2026: a specific union surplus notice
A September 10, 2026 notice from CWA Local 1101 said Verizon New York Inc., Verizon Services Corp., and Empire City Subway Company declared a surplus condition affecting 27 job titles in Force Adjustment Areas 1–6. The notice said the company attributed the condition to a process change. For employees offered and accepting the described Special EIPP, it listed an October 2, 2026 written-election deadline and an October 11, 2026 off-payroll date.
