Verizon collects information needed to provide its services and says some disclosures for targeted advertising may qualify as “selling” or “sharing” under state privacy laws. You can opt out of certain advertising and insights uses, but no single setting stops all collection or deletes your account history.
What Verizon collects
The information Verizon collects depends on which services you use. Its U.S. privacy policy describes several broad categories:
- Account and identity: name, contact details, account and service information, phone or device numbers, and billing-related information.
- Communications and usage: call records, text and messaging records, app and feature use, websites visited in certain contexts, and video, television, rental, or purchase activity.
- Location and technical data: wireless location, device identifiers and characteristics, router connections, DNS information, technical configurations, and network-performance data.
These examples describe information categories, not a claim that every customer’s complete activity is collected in the same way. Verizon’s full privacy policy explains the categories and uses by service and program.
What Verizon means by “selling” or “sharing” data
Collection is not the same as selling. Verizon obtains information through services, websites, apps, devices, and customer accounts. It can use information internally to provide service, support customers, operate networks, prevent fraud, market products, personalize communications, or analyze activity. It can also disclose information to affiliates, vendors, service providers, and other parties for stated purposes.

Verizon says some disclosures and advertising practices may be considered selling or sharing under applicable state privacy laws. Its Your Privacy Choices page describes advertising and social-media companies collecting information through technologies such as cookies, pixels, tags, scripts, beacons, and identifier matching. Those companies may combine information with data from elsewhere to target ads.
In privacy laws, “sale” or “sharing” can include certain transfers for valuable consideration or targeted advertising; it does not necessarily mean a conventional cash sale of a complete customer file to a data broker. Verizon’s public description does not establish that all customers’ full browsing histories, messages, or location histories are sold for unrestricted resale.

Opt out of sale, sharing, and targeted advertising
For a logged-in Verizon consumer account
- Go to Your Privacy Choices.
- Choose the consumer-customer option and sign in to the relevant My Verizon account.
- Submit the opt-out choice displayed for sale, sharing, and targeted-advertising activities.
- If your household has multiple Verizon accounts or services, repeat the process and confirm the choice for each relevant account.
For Verizon website visits
On the same Your Privacy Choices page, use the Website Visitor control and select Opt out, not Allow. This control may be tied to the current browser and device, so repeat it in other browsers and on other devices. Repeat it after clearing cookies or if your browser automatically deletes site data.
If you do not have an online Verizon account, Verizon says registering the service and then making the choice while signed in is preferred. If you do not register, use the form and also complete the Website Visitor opt-out so account-related and browser-related activity are addressed.

Use Global Privacy Control, not Do Not Track
Verizon says it recognizes Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals in the circumstances described in its privacy policy. For logged-in customers, an active GPC signal can block third-party cookies, pixels, and similar technologies on Verizon’s site and opt the customer out of associated sale and sharing for the line; Verizon says GPC overrides a conflicting choice made through login. GPC should not be assumed to cover every app, service, or third-party website. Verizon says it does not honor ordinary Do Not Track signals.
Check Verizon’s separate programs and settings
The advertising opt-out is not a master switch for every Verizon program. Use My Verizon or the My Verizon app to review Edit profile & settings → Privacy preferences. Labels and available controls can differ by account, product, app version, and location. Verizon also lists 1-800-333-9956 for updating certain preferences.

| Program or setting | What Verizon says it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Custom Experience | Uses information about sites visited and apps used on a mobile device to personalize Verizon communications, recommendations, plans, services, and offers. Verizon says customers are included unless they opt out. For this program, it says it uses the domain and subdomain in a web address, not information after the first slash or question mark. | Review the Custom Experience setting in Privacy preferences. |
| Custom Experience Plus | Uses a broader range of information for similar purposes, including sites, apps, Fios services, location, and Customer Proprietary Network Information such as numbers called and numbers that call. Verizon says participation requires opt-in. | Check whether you opted in and change the setting if you no longer want to participate. |
| Business and Marketing Insights | Uses information about wireless product and service use, including data sent through a mobile hotspot, to develop insights. Verizon says information from customers who opt out will not be included in aggregate reports sold or shared outside Verizon under this program. | Opt out through My Verizon, the My Verizon app, or call 866-211-0874. |
| Android personalized app recommendations | May recommend apps based on use of apps Verizon previously installed on the device. | Use the Your Privacy Choices link in the relevant notification. Verizon says to make the choice separately on each Android device. |
| Marketing communications | Promotional messages are a separate preference from sale/sharing, targeted-advertising, and insights controls. | Review marketing preferences and unsubscribe from messages separately if desired. |
| Loyalty programs | Program-specific terms may describe additional information practices; participation and withdrawal depend on the individual program’s terms. | Review the terms for any loyalty program you join and its available withdrawal options. |
Verizon announced a loyalty program on June 16, 2026, with benefits including Verizon Dollars and waived activation and upgrade fees for participating customers. That announcement is not a substitute for the program’s own current terms, and it does not by itself establish that enrollment authorizes sale of every category of personal information. Read the announcement and review the terms before enrolling.

Home Internet and Fios customers may see service-specific controls rather than the same options as wireless customers. Visible, Verizon Value, Frontier, and Verizon Connect do not necessarily use the same controls as standard Verizon Wireless or Home accounts. Visible has separate privacy choices; Visible Offers users can disable “Functional and Performance” and “Advertising” cookies. Frontier customers should use the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link or Frontier privacy form. Verizon Connect has a separate privacy-choice page for website activity and targeted advertising. Verizon’s cookie information also describes brand-specific exceptions.
What opting out does—and does not—change
The Your Privacy Choices opt-out can limit specified disclosures and third-party collection for targeted advertising. It is not a deletion request or a stop-collection switch. Verizon may still collect and use information needed to provide and secure service, process billing, prevent fraud, troubleshoot, support customers, comply with law, and carry out other disclosed business functions. Its privacy overview describes those broader purposes.
- It does not necessarily erase account, billing, or payment records, or change Verizon’s retention of information.
- It does not necessarily remove information already held by advertising or other companies.
- It does not automatically opt out every browser, device, account, or service, nor stop websites outside Verizon from collecting their own data.
- It does not necessarily stop internal analytics, aggregate reporting, all Verizon marketing, or contextual advertising that does not rely on the opted-out data.
- It does not mean you will see no ads; it limits specified uses of information for targeting.
If you want access to, correction of, or deletion of information, use Verizon’s privacy-rights or dashboard process rather than only changing advertising settings. Rights can depend on your state. Verizon says some dashboard details are masked for security and that highly sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, passwords, and credit-card information will not appear in the dashboard or download. See the Privacy Dashboard FAQ.
Quick Recap
Common opt-out problems
- You opted out once but use several devices: repeat the Website Visitor choice for each browser and device, especially after clearing cookies.
- You disabled cookies but stayed enrolled in an account program: cookie controls address browser tracking, not necessarily Custom Experience or Business and Marketing Insights. Check both account settings and visitor controls.
- You still see Verizon ads: an opt-out limits covered targeting, not all advertising or promotions.
- You unsubscribed from email but expected data-sharing to stop: marketing-message preferences and privacy opt-outs are separate.
- You cannot find the menu: search My Verizon for “Privacy preferences”; menu names and layouts can vary.
