Verizon Really Did Raise Prices on Some Older Unlimited Plans—What Changed in 2024

Verizon’s confirmed $4-per-line increase took effect in 2024 on selected older unlimited plans—not every Verizon unlimited customer. Here’s how to identify affected lines and compare your options.

Yes—but the confirmed increase was a 2024 change to selected older Verizon unlimited plans, not a newly verified 2026 increase across all unlimited customers. Verizon raised the monthly service charge by $4 for each affected line starting March 1, 2024. Customers could keep their plans; the change appeared on the billing cycle after the effective date.

What Verizon increased—and when

Verizon’s customer-support statements confirmed a $4-per-line monthly increase for selected legacy unlimited plans, effective March 1, 2024. Customers received notices in January, but the new rate did not necessarily appear on a bill immediately: the timing depended on each account’s billing cycle. Verizon’s rate-increase notice and contemporaneous reporting on the customer notice describe the change.

The evidence establishes that 2024 increase; it does not establish that Verizon is raising unlimited-plan prices again in 2026. Verizon said newer myPlan pricing was not included in the announced adjustment. Verizon’s discussion of the 2024 increase distinguishes the newer plans from the affected older ones.

Because Verizon used several generations of similar names, check the exact plan name on the bill or in My Verizon rather than relying on a general description such as “unlimited.” The increase was not a blanket change to every Verizon unlimited plan.

How much more did an affected account pay?

The $4 applied per affected line, not once per account. These examples show the monthly service-charge increase before unrelated taxes, fees, discounts, or credits:

Affected lines Monthly increase
1 $4
2 $8
4 $16
6 $24

A plan-rate adjustment does not by itself change a phone’s device-payment balance. Taxes, government surcharges, insurance, add-ons, and financing are separate bill items.

Did customers have to change plans?

No. Verizon said customers could remain on an affected plan with its existing features and benefits. “No action required” meant Verizon would apply the rate change automatically; it did not mean the monthly charge would stay the same.

Verizon also added 5 GB of premium mobile-hotspot data for affected customers. That is an extra plan feature, not a $4 cash credit, and its practical value depends on whether a customer uses hotspot data. The customer notice also reported that included benefits were not being removed as part of that particular change. The January 2024 notice coverage describes the added hotspot allowance and retained benefits.

How to check whether the increase explains your bill

  1. Open the latest Verizon bill and find the plan or service-access charge for each line.
  2. Compare those charges with the prior bill, allowing for the date your billing cycle began.
  3. Check the exact plan name for each line in My Verizon or on the bill.
  4. Calculate $4 for each line that matches an affected plan; do not apply the increase to every line automatically.
  5. Review discounts and other charges separately. A lost Auto Pay or paper-free discount, a new perk, a device payment, insurance, taxes, or a changed promotion can also alter the total.
  6. Compare the bill with any Verizon notice you received. If the plan charge still does not reconcile, ask Verizon to explain that line item before changing plans.

Compare the plan charge before unrelated credits and discounts when isolating the rate change. An increase in the account total alone does not prove that the $4 adjustment caused it.

Can you still get one of these plans?

Verizon’s support pages say 5G Start, 5G Play More, and 5G Do More are no longer available to add to accounts, though existing customers may retain them. See Verizon’s pages for 5G Do More, 5G Play More, and 5G Start. Availability of other older variants can also depend on account circumstances. Treat a move away from a grandfathered plan as potentially one-way: check the terms and available choices for your account before confirming a change.

What “unlimited” means for these plans

Unlimited data does not necessarily mean unlimited data at the highest network priority. Verizon’s support pages for 5G Play More and 5G Do More describe 50 GB of premium network access, after which data remains available but may be temporarily deprioritized during congestion. That is congestion management, not a fixed cutoff. See Verizon’s 5G Play More details and 5G Do More details.

Plan value also depends on hotspot allowances and speeds, coverage, network technology, and the features included with the specific plan. Verizon’s Data Boost information says a purchase can restore certain hotspot speeds but does not change how data is prioritized on the network; its listed $35 charge for 5 GB applies to certain unlimited phone plans. Check the current terms before buying a boost. Verizon Data Boost FAQs.

Keep the legacy plan or compare alternatives?

There is no universal answer: compare the account’s actual net cost and the benefits each line uses. Verizon’s current plan page describes its myPlan options—Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus, and Unlimited Ultimate—with optional perks. See Verizon’s current unlimited-plan page for the choices and account-specific details. Public pricing can change, and the final cost may depend on line count, Auto Pay, discounts, taxes, and account offers.

Keeping the legacy plan may make sense when

  • You actively use included entertainment, travel, cloud-storage, or hotspot benefits.
  • Recreating those benefits separately would cost more than the difference in plan charges.
  • You value the current plan’s features and prefer not to risk losing grandfathered terms or account-specific discounts.

Compare a current Verizon plan when

  • You do not use the older plan’s bundled benefits.
  • You want to choose a base data tier and add only selected perks.
  • The account’s available pricing and line-by-line options produce a better fit after accounting for premium data, hotspot use, international features, and promotions.

Verizon’s brochure dated October 23, 2024 showed historical four-line Auto Pay examples of $30 per line for Unlimited Welcome, $45 for Unlimited Plus, and $55 for Unlimited Ultimate. Those are historical examples, not verified 2026 prices. The dated 2024 brochure should not be used as a current quote.

Compare another carrier when

Consider alternatives if Verizon coverage is not essential for the places you use your phone or the account’s total cost no longer suits you. Do not judge by an advertised base price alone: coverage, taxes, deprioritization, device compatibility, financing balances, and discounts vary by location and account. A carrier’s claim to be cheaper or better requires a current, location-specific comparison.

Before making any plan change, save the current plan details and check what happens to included perks, hotspot and international features, discounts, device promotions, financing, and upgrade eligibility. Compare line by line: a family account may not need the same plan tier on every phone, and a single-line advertised price is not a fair comparison with a multi-line account.
