Verizon Lost 289,000 Postpaid Phone Subscribers in Q1 2025—Here’s What the Figure Means

Verizon’s 289,000 postpaid phone net loss was a Q1 2025 result, not a count of all customers who left. Here’s how the company-wide total differs from its Consumer segment loss—and what later results showed.

Verizon reported 289,000 net postpaid phone losses in the first quarter of 2025, up from 114,000 in the same quarter a year earlier. The figure is a quarterly net change in a specific customer category—not a count of all Verizon customers who left. Verizon’s CFO linked the Consumer-segment losses to recent pricing actions, while a later quarter showed the opposite result: 184,000 postpaid phone net additions in Q2 2026.

What does “289,000 customers” mean?

Verizon’s April 22, 2025 earnings release reported 289,000 total postpaid phone net losses for Q1 2025. “Net losses” means the number of postpaid phone connections lost exceeded the number added during that quarter by 289,000. It does not mean Verizon had 289,000 fewer customers across every product, or that exactly 289,000 people switched to another carrier.

The company also reported 114,000 total postpaid phone net losses in Q1 2024, making the Q1 2025 decline larger year over year. The figures are quarterly results, not a current subscriber count. Verizon’s Q1 2025 results report the totals.

Why is the Consumer loss different from the company total?

Verizon reported 356,000 wireless retail postpaid phone net losses in its Consumer segment, while its Business segment added 67,000 postpaid phone connections. These are segment figures; the 289,000 figure is the total postpaid phone net loss across the company. Business additions partly offset Consumer losses, which is why the company-wide total is smaller than the Consumer figure.

Q1 2025 measure Net change Scope
Total postpaid phone −289,000 Verizon company-wide
Wireless retail postpaid phone −356,000 Consumer segment
Postpaid phone +67,000 Business segment

These categories have different scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable. All three figures are from Verizon’s April 22, 2025 earnings release.

Did Verizon’s price increases cause customers to leave?

Verizon CFO Tony Skiadas said, “Our consumer postpaid phone net losses reflect the impact of recent pricing actions,” in the company’s Q1 2025 earnings discussion, as Android Authority reported on April 23, 2025. That is Verizon’s explanation for the Consumer result; it does not establish that price was the sole reason every customer left.

Contemporary reporting described specific January 2025 changes: some myPlan accounts with five or more lines lost a discount worth $3 per month per line, while some legacy plans also saw price changes. For a five-line account affected by the discount change, the reported increase was at least $15 per month. These were changes to certain accounts and plans, not a universal increase for every Verizon customer. The details were reported at the time by Android Authority; they should not be read as current pricing.

Is Verizon still losing postpaid phone subscribers?

Not in every quarter. Verizon reported 184,000 postpaid phone net additions in Q2 2026, according to its July 24, 2026 results. That later gain does not erase the Q1 2025 loss, but it means the “nearly 300,000” headline describes a particular quarter rather than a current, uninterrupted rate of losses.

What should you compare before switching carriers?

A carrier’s subscriber gains or losses do not tell you whether its service will suit your household. If you are considering a switch, compare the costs and conditions that apply to your own lines:

  • Per-line pricing: Price the complete number of lines you need, and verify which discounts apply to your account.
  • Guarantee terms: Read what a price guarantee excludes and whether changing plans affects it. A 2025 report on Verizon’s three-year price lock said taxes, fees, and perks were excluded and a plan change could reset the lock; those dated terms should be checked against Verizon’s current policy before relying on them. Android Authority reported those limits on April 3, 2025.
