Verizon’s Q1 2025 result was a serious customer-retention warning, but “nearly 300,000 customers cut ties” is an imprecise description—and later results show the problem did not continue at the same scale. Verizon reported 289,000 total postpaid phone net losses in the quarter, compared with 114,000 in Q1 2024. The consumer business accounted for 356,000 of those losses, while business additions reduced the company-wide decline. By Q1 2026, Verizon reported positive first-quarter postpaid phone net additions for the first time since 2013.
What the nearly 300,000 figure actually means
The figure was 289,000 total postpaid phone net losses—not a verified count of 289,000 individual people or households that permanently left Verizon.

Wireless carriers generally report phone lines or connections. A net-loss figure subtracts new additions from disconnected lines. One household can have several lines, and a departing line does not necessarily mean the entire account left Verizon.
The company-wide number also combines consumer and business service:

Verizon’s business segment added enough phone connections to partially offset the consumer decline. That is why the consumer loss was larger than the total company result. Verizon’s Q1 earnings release provides the underlying figures.
Why were Verizon customers leaving?
Verizon’s clearest official explanation was customer reaction to recent pricing actions. On its Q1 earnings call, management said several pricing changes contributed to higher churn. The company expected those changes to generate more than $1 billion in incremental service revenue.
That created a straightforward trade-off: higher revenue per existing customer could come at the cost of more cancellations. Verizon did not say that every lost line left because of one specific fee or price increase, so it would be too broad to treat pricing as the sole explanation. Competitive switcher promotions, household budgets, device-financing obligations and customers’ perception of network value may also affect individual decisions.
Verizon also said pressure within federal-government accounts affected business phone additions. That supports a business-segment explanation, but it does not establish that federal-government cuts caused the consumer losses. Nor does it prove that a specific political initiative caused the company-wide result. The narrower, supported conclusion is that federal-account pressure affected part of the business segment while pricing-related churn pressured consumers.

A bad customer quarter was not a financial collapse
The subscriber numbers were serious, especially because the consumer loss and churn worsened sharply from a year earlier. But the same quarter was not an across-the-board financial failure. Verizon reported:
- $33.5 billion in operating revenue;
- $20.8 billion in wireless service revenue, up 2.7% year over year;
- $5.0 billion in consolidated net income; and
- $3.6 billion in free cash flow.
That distinction matters. A postpaid phone net-loss quarter is evidence of pressure on customer acquisition and retention. It is not, by itself, evidence that a company is near insolvency or that its network has suddenly become unusable.
How Verizon responded
Verizon highlighted several efforts intended to improve customer value and retention:
- a three-year price-lock initiative;
- a free-phone guarantee;
- continued network investment; and
- a broader customer-segmentation and transformation strategy.
A price lock may make monthly plan charges more predictable, but customers should check what it actually protects. Taxes, government fees, device payments, insurance, add-ons and services outside the qualifying plan may still change. Likewise, a free-phone promotion can reduce upgrade costs but may require eligibility, trade-in conditions or monthly bill credits.

Promotions can bring in new lines and reduce switching anxiety, but they can also pressure margins. Verizon’s challenge was to recover customer growth without undoing the additional revenue it sought through higher pricing.
Did Verizon reach a genuine breaking point?
In Q1 2025, Verizon reached a strategic warning point—not a demonstrated corporate breaking point. Consumer phone losses more than doubled from the year-earlier quarter, churn rose after pricing changes, and the results showed that customers would resist higher costs if they did not see enough additional value.
However, “breaking point” was editorial language, not an official Verizon crisis classification. The company continued to produce revenue, profit and free cash flow, and the subsequent results are important to the interpretation.

- Q4 2025: Verizon reported 616,000 total postpaid phone net additions, its best quarter in that category since 2019.
- Q1 2026: Verizon reported positive first-quarter postpaid phone net additions for the first time since 2013 and raised its adjusted EPS guidance.
These results do not erase the Q1 2025 warning. They do show that describing Verizon as still losing customers at the same rate would be inaccurate. The better reading is that Verizon’s pricing strategy caused a sharp retention problem, followed by a recovery as the company adjusted its offers and customer strategy.

3. Add switching costs
Check the remaining device balance, unpaid promotional credits, trade-in conditions and number-transfer requirements. A cheaper advertised plan may not save money if switching requires paying off a phone or forfeiting bill credits.
4. Match the plan to your household
Compare the number of lines, hotspot use, international roaming, wearable and tablet support, business needs, data priority and congestion performance.
5. Read the price guarantee carefully
Determine whether a price lock covers only qualifying plan charges or the entire bill. Device financing, taxes, fees and optional services may remain outside the guarantee.

Potential alternatives include Visible, which uses Verizon’s network but may offer different features and prioritization; US Mobile, which emphasizes plan flexibility and multiple underlying networks; T-Mobile; and AT&T. Verify current prices, taxes, eligibility, coverage and promotional terms before switching. Existing Verizon customers should also check Verizon’s current plans and device offers first, because a retention or upgrade offer may cost less than changing carriers.
The bottom line on Verizon’s “breaking point”
Verizon’s 289,000 postpaid phone net loss in Q1 2025 was real and significant, but it was a net-line metric rather than a count of unique customers. The consumer business was the main source of weakness, and Verizon linked higher churn primarily to pricing actions while separately citing pressure in federal-government business accounts.
The result exposed a genuine pricing and retention problem. It did not prove that Verizon was in an existential crisis. Q2 and Q3 2025 showed steadily narrowing consumer losses, Q4 produced a major company-wide gain, and Q1 2026 brought positive first-quarter postpaid phone additions. For consumers, the sensible response is to compare the complete cost and coverage of your own plan—not to assume that one alarming quarter settles the question.
