1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—Verizon has ended the old 60-day automatic-unlock path for many newly purchased phones. Under Verizon’s current policy, standard postpaid devices bought from Verizon on or after January 27, 2026, generally remain locked until the device is paid in full or the applicable financing terms are completed. New Verizon Prepaid devices activated on or after that date generally require 365 days of paid, active service.
This does not mean you are prohibited from leaving Verizon or transferring your phone number. It means the Verizon phone itself may not work with the new carrier’s SIM or eSIM until it qualifies for unlocking.
What changed at Verizon?
Verizon previously unlocked eligible phones automatically after 60 days, even when customers were still making device payments. That treatment came from Verizon’s obligations associated with the 700 MHz C Block spectrum—not from a uniform nationwide rule applying to every wireless carrier.
On January 12, 2026, the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau granted Verizon relief from that prior 60-day obligation. Verizon then changed its device-locking policy, with the new treatment applying to covered devices purchased or activated beginning January 27, 2026.

The FCC did not create a nationwide 365-day phone-locking requirement, and it did not ban customers from unlocking phones. The change was a Verizon-specific regulatory waiver followed by Verizon policy changes.
Verizon has said the shorter lock period contributed to handset fraud and theft. Consumer advocates have argued that longer locks increase switching costs and can keep customers tied to device-financing agreements. Those are competing positions in the regulatory debate, not findings that Verizon’s fraud claims were conclusively proven.

Who is affected?
| Device or customer situation | Unlock treatment |
|---|---|
| Standard Verizon monthly device activated before January 27, 2026 | Verizon says it retains the previous 60-day automatic-unlock treatment, subject to the former policy’s requirements. |
| Standard Verizon monthly device purchased on or after January 27, 2026 | Generally remains locked until paid in full or the applicable financing or contract terms are fulfilled. |
| Verizon Prepaid device activated on or before January 26, 2026 | Verizon says it unlocks after 60 days of paid activation or service, subject to the applicable requirements. |
| Verizon Prepaid device activated on or after January 27, 2026 | Requires 365 days of paid, active service before unlocking. |
| Bring-your-own-device customer | Verizon’s locking policy does not apply to a phone bought elsewhere, although the phone must already be unlocked, compatible, and free of another carrier’s lock. |
| Lost, stolen, or fraud-flagged device | May not unlock even after payoff or the normal waiting period. |
| Verizon Business device | Separate business terms may apply. Verizon says unlocking may occur after payoff, completion of the line term, or payment of a termination fee, subject to the agreement. |
Check the phone’s purchase date, activation date, plan type, and payment agreement rather than relying only on the date you opened your Verizon account. Verizon’s device-locking FAQ contains the cutoff information, while prepaid customers should consult the separate Verizon Prepaid policy.
Postpaid phones: the practical rule is usually “paid off”
The most important correction to the common “365-day lock” headline is that postpaid and prepaid customers are treated differently.

For a standard postpaid phone covered by the new policy, Verizon says the device unlocks automatically when it is paid in full or otherwise satisfies the applicable device-payment or contract terms. A phone financed over 24 or 36 months could therefore remain locked for substantially longer than one year unless you pay its remaining balance early.
Paying your monthly Verizon service bill does not necessarily mean the phone is paid off. Your wireless bill can be current while the device still has months of installment payments remaining.
Payoff may also be financially complicated. If the phone was discounted through monthly promotional credits, canceling service or paying off the device early may affect the remaining credits, depending on the specific promotion’s terms. Unlocking and promotional-credit eligibility are separate issues. Review the device-payment agreement and promotion details before making an early payoff.

Prepaid phones: 365 days of paid, active service
For a Verizon Prepaid device activated on or after January 27, 2026, Verizon’s stated threshold is 365 days of paid and active service.
- Suspended prepaid service does not count toward the required period.
- The phone must be activated on Verizon Prepaid and in working condition.
- The device must not be reported lost or stolen or flagged as fraudulent.
- Verizon says an eligible customer can request an unlock after the 365-day period; its broader policy language also describes automatic remote unlocking for eligible devices.
- Military exceptions may apply when relocation orders place a customer outside Verizon’s coverage area.
Do not automatically apply this rule to Visible, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, or another Verizon-owned or Verizon-affiliated brand. Those services can have separate device policies. Check the brand’s current terms for the exact phone and plan.
What happens if you switch carriers?
You can generally port your phone number away from Verizon while the phone remains locked. Number portability, service cancellation, and device unlocking are separate processes.
If you leave before the phone qualifies for unlocking, the same handset may not accept the new carrier’s physical SIM or eSIM. Your practical choices are to:
- Continue using the Verizon phone on Verizon until it qualifies.
- Pay off the device if Verizon’s postpaid policy makes it eligible, while checking the financial consequences first.
- Use a second phone that is already unlocked and compatible with the new carrier.
- Buy a factory-unlocked replacement phone.
- Keep the Verizon device until its remaining balance and unlock conditions are resolved.
Canceling service does not, by itself, unlock a still-locked phone. Porting your number does not unlock it either. Verizon’s FAQ indicates that a suspended postpaid line does not necessarily change the device’s unlock date, while suspended prepaid service does not count toward the 365-day prepaid requirement.

Canceling a financed line may also make the remaining device balance due under the payment agreement. That billing consequence is separate from whether the device unlocks.

Travel: roaming is not the same as unlocking
A locked Verizon phone may still roam on another carrier’s network, including while traveling internationally. Roaming does not mean the phone can accept a local foreign SIM or eSIM.
If you want to buy local service abroad, the phone generally needs to be unlocked. Even then, confirm that it supports the destination carrier’s LTE, 5G, and VoLTE bands, the required eSIM type, and any carrier-specific certification.
How to check whether your phone is locked
- Test another network: Insert a non-Verizon SIM or activate a non-Verizon eSIM. A message such as “SIM Not Supported” usually indicates that the phone is locked, although compatibility or activation problems can produce other errors.
- Check an iPhone: Open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. An unlocked iPhone generally displays “No SIM restrictions.” Menu wording can vary by iOS release.
- Check Android: Menu names vary by manufacturer and software version. Look for a SIM, network-lock, or carrier-lock status in Settings, or contact Verizon with the device’s IMEI.
- Check destination compatibility: Use the official BYOD or IMEI checker of the carrier you plan to join. An unlocked device is not automatically compatible with every network.
Verizon’s support pages can explain the policy and eligibility requirements, but an account-specific status check may require the phone’s IMEI or Verizon account information.

- physical SIM and eSIM support;
- whether the phone is a U.S. model or an imported regional variant;
- Wi-Fi calling and visual voicemail support; and
- whether the destination carrier permits that exact model.
Verizon warns that an unlocked device may have limited functionality or may not work on another carrier because networks use different technologies and configurations.
How to avoid being trapped by a carrier lock
Buy factory unlocked
Phones sold directly as unlocked by Apple, Google, Samsung, or another reputable retailer can provide more flexibility for switching carriers and using local travel SIMs or eSIMs. Confirm that the listing says unlocked; a retailer may also sell a carrier-specific version.
The trade-off is financial: an unlocked purchase may require more money upfront and may not qualify for the bill credits attached to a Verizon trade-in or promotional offer.
Use BYOD
Bring a phone you already own, verify that it is unlocked, and run its IMEI through the new carrier’s official compatibility checker before switching. This avoids financing a new carrier-locked device.

An inexpensive unlocked backup phone can provide a practical exit route if your primary Verizon phone is still financed or locked. Check compatibility before you need it, particularly if you depend on eSIM or specific 5G bands.
Compare the full cost of carrier financing
When comparing a Verizon offer with an unlocked purchase, include the total device cost, financing length, remaining promotional credits, payoff terms, return window, unlock date, and travel needs. A low advertised monthly payment can come with a long period during which the phone cannot be activated elsewhere.
Questions to answer before buying a Verizon phone
- When will this specific device unlock under my plan?
- Is the phone financed over 24 or 36 months?
- What happens to promotional credits if I cancel, switch, or pay off early?
- Will the device work on the carrier I may use next?
- Can I use a foreign SIM or eSIM while traveling?
- Is the phone being sold factory unlocked or as a Verizon model?
- What payment method will trigger the unlock, and could a security delay apply?
- What happens if the phone is reported lost, stolen, or flagged for fraud?
Bottom line for Verizon customers
For devices covered by Verizon’s new policy, the old 60-day expectation is no longer reliable. A new postpaid phone generally remains locked until payoff or completion of the applicable terms; a new prepaid phone generally requires 365 days of paid, active service. Older devices purchased or activated before January 27, 2026, retain Verizon’s stated 60-day treatment.
Before switching, separate three questions: can you port your number, is the device unlocked, and will the device be compatible with the new network? If carrier flexibility matters more than financing credits, a factory-unlocked phone or a verified BYOD device is the safer choice.
