Verizon’s Home Device Protect upgrade took effect April 25, 2024. It broadened eligibility to additional connected devices, added coverage for a qualifying second U.S. residence, expanded tech-care services and raised the maximum claim to $3,000. The plan costs $25 per month plus applicable taxes, but it is not insurance: a 30-day waiting period, service fees, exclusions and a $5,000 rolling 12-month claim limit all affect its value.
What changed in the April 2024 upgrade?
Verizon packaged the expansion as more than a longer device list. Its April 25, 2024 supplement added or highlighted new product categories and support benefits, while removing digital-security and privacy tools. The change was an upgrade to an existing service, not a 2026 launch. Verizon’s April 2024 upgrade summary describes the changes.
- More eligible categories: Certain connected home-health devices, smart mops and vacuums, pet-care electronics, and advanced gaming devices and accessories.
- A second residence: Eligible home technology at one qualifying U.S. residential address can be covered without another monthly charge.
- A higher per-claim limit: The maximum increased from $2,000 to $3,000.
- More tech care: Benefits include tune-ups, cleaning, recycling assistance, virus removal for most laptops, and limited in-home expert visits.
- Security tools removed: Digital-security and privacy tools were no longer included under the updated plan; Verizon said some customers with overlapping mobile-protection or security products would also lose an associated bill credit.
These changes do not make every smart or Wi-Fi-enabled product eligible for every type of claim. The current plan terms define qualifying products, covered causes, fees and exclusions.
Which devices may qualify?
The plan covers eligible products in listed categories, not all household electronics. The terms include a broad mix of home technology. Verizon says eligible products generally do not have to be purchased from Verizon, but category-specific requirements still apply. Verizon’s product summary describes purchase-source flexibility.

Some listed portable products may qualify for accidental-damage-from-handling coverage, subject to the terms. A product’s marketing label, connectivity or presence in a broad category does not by itself establish that a particular device or type of damage is covered. Consult the December 2025 plan terms for current provisions and product definitions.
What does the plan provide?
Depending on the product, claim and plan terms, Verizon or its administrator may arrange a repair, replacement or reimbursement. A replacement can be new, refurbished or remanufactured, or provide comparable functionality; repairs may use non-original parts. Reimbursement may be based on the assessed replacement value, age and condition of the product. The plan terms set out these remedies.

Breakdown and accidental damage are different
Breakdown benefits can apply to covered mechanical or electrical failures, normal wear and tear, power surges and other causes specified in the terms. Accidental-damage coverage is limited to specified portable products and qualifying damage from handling; it is not a blanket promise to cover any accident involving any device.
Support and installation are separate benefits
Technical support starts when the customer enrolls, even though claim eligibility has a waiting period. Tech-care services can include setup, configuration, troubleshooting and optimization, as well as tune-ups and cleaning for laptops, tablets and gaming consoles, recycling assistance, and virus removal for most laptops at no additional charge. Verizon’s product information also describes up to two in-home expert visits every 12 months, subject to limitations. These services do not expand the kinds of damage eligible for a claim.

What does it cost, and how do claims work?
Verizon’s current support page lists the monthly subscription at $25 plus applicable taxes. It renews automatically each month until canceled, and Verizon says customers can cancel at any time. The subscription fee is only one part of the potential cost.
| Cost or limit | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | $25 per month plus applicable taxes; automatically renews monthly until canceled. |
| Claim service fee | Verizon’s FAQ lists $0, $49 or $99 depending on the product and service. The general support page says an approved claim can incur a fee of up to $99, plus tax. |
| Maximum per approved claim | $3,000. |
| Aggregate claims | $5,000 across claims in a rolling 12-month period. Claims at the primary and qualifying second residence share this limit. |
| Installation request | Verizon’s FAQ lists a separate $49 service fee for each product installation request; qualifying promotions may waive certain setup charges. |

A $3,000 ceiling is a maximum, not a guarantee that a claim will be paid at that amount. The remedy depends on the covered product, damage or failure, plan requirements and claim assessment. A high-value repair or replacement can also use a substantial share of the $5,000 rolling allowance.

When does claim coverage begin?
Technical support is available from enrollment, but claims generally become eligible only after the initial 30-day waiting period—on day 31. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and products generally must be in good working condition before enrollment or when acquired after enrollment. Buying the plan after a device starts failing therefore ordinarily will not make that existing problem claimable. Verizon explains the waiting period in its current plan information and the condition requirements in its plan terms.
How does the second-residence benefit work?
The second address can be a qualifying U.S. residence, such as a family member’s home, a student’s residence or a vacation home. It must be primarily residential rather than business-related. Verizon’s FAQ says the address can be changed up to three times in a 12-month period. Devices at both locations count against the same $5,000 rolling 12-month aggregate claim limit; there is no separate allowance for the second home. See Verizon’s FAQ and the plan terms.
What is not covered, or needs special attention?
- Mobile phones: Home Device Protect does not cover phones. Devices already protected by certain Verizon mobile-protection options may also be ineligible for this plan. See Verizon’s plan information and FAQ.
- Verizon-provided routers: The home-router category excludes Verizon-branded or Verizon-provided routers under the terms.
- Pre-existing problems: A failure or damage that existed before enrollment is generally excluded.
- Theft and broad property risks: This is not broad protection against theft, loss, fire or other household-property risks. Check the terms for covered causes; homeowners or renters insurance may address different risks.
- Medical needs: Eligibility for a home-health device does not mean the plan supplies medical advice, clinical monitoring or reimbursement for medical expenses.
- Data during repair: Computer service may result in data deletion. Back up files before sending a device for repair.
- Eligibility after service changes: The plan may terminate if qualifying Verizon home or mobile service is canceled.
The plan is a service contract separate from a manufacturer’s warranty, not conventional insurance. It may provide benefits during or after a manufacturer-warranty period, but it does not simply extend every warranty provision. Its terms also include arbitration provisions and permit changes to charges or terms with advance notice, subject to applicable law. Review the current terms before enrolling.

What installation benefits may Verizon Home Internet customers get?
Some Verizon Home Internet customers with Home Device Protect may qualify for installation help, including professional setup for qualifying 5G Home orders or installation of eligible products such as televisions, soundbars, security cameras, thermostats and doorbells. These are not universal free-installation benefits: availability and fee waivers depend on the service, product, location and promotion. Verizon’s FAQ says certain 5G Home setup waivers depend on order timing, location, simultaneous enrollment and maintaining both services for a specified period. Confirm the offer and any service fee for the specific order in Verizon’s FAQ.
Is Home Device Protect worth $25 a month?
At the listed price, the subscription totals $300 over 12 months before taxes. A claim may add a $0, $49 or $99 service fee, depending on the product and service. Whether the plan is worthwhile depends on the devices in the household, the risk of a covered problem, and whether support or installation benefits have value to the customer. The price alone cannot establish that the plan will pay for itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt may suit a tech-heavy household
The case is stronger for a household with several expensive eligible laptops, TVs, gaming systems, tablets or connected devices; a qualifying second residence; portable products that may receive accidental-damage coverage; or a genuine need for technical and installation support. One costly covered repair or replacement could matter more than a collection of low-value devices, though the claim fees and limits still apply.
It may be a poor fit for a small or narrowly defined need
It is less compelling for someone with inexpensive electronics, one older device, a phone-only protection need, or no interest in tech support and installation. It also does not meet a need for theft or broad property coverage, and it is a poor solution for a device already failing because of the waiting period and pre-existing-condition exclusion.
Quick Recap
Compare the alternatives by what they protect
- Manufacturer plans: AppleCare+ or Microsoft Complete may make more sense for a qualifying device when brand-specific repair and support matter. They are product-focused rather than a single mixed-brand household plan. Check the manufacturer’s current terms and price for the exact product.
- Retailer or third-party plans: A plan from a retailer or provider such as Allstate Protection Plans may suit one purchase. Compare the exact contract, term, fee, exclusions and claim limits rather than assuming it offers equivalent household or second-residence coverage.
- Homeowners or renters insurance: These policies address broader property risks such as theft, fire and certain disasters, subject to policy terms and deductibles. They are not necessarily designed for ordinary mechanical breakdowns or device setup, and Home Device Protect is not a substitute for them.
- Self-insuring: Setting aside $25 per month avoids plan eligibility rules, waiting periods, service fees and claim caps, but provides no repair guarantee or technical-support benefits.
Checklist before enrolling
- Confirm the exact product appears in the current qualifying-product terms and that the issue you want protected is a covered cause.
- Make sure the device is working before enrollment and account for the 30-day claim waiting period.
- Ask which service fee applies to the product or service you are most likely to use.
- Compare the $3,000 per-claim ceiling and shared $5,000 rolling 12-month cap with your equipment’s value.
- Check whether a manufacturer plan, credit-card benefit, or existing insurance already addresses the risk.
- If using a second residence, confirm it qualifies as residential and understand the shared claim limit and address-change rule.
- Verify installation eligibility, promotional conditions and any separate installation fee.
- Consider whether you will keep the Verizon service required for plan eligibility.
