The rate you earn depends on your qualifying monthly spend, rewards are credited to your Venmo balance, and cash back is capped at $100 per calendar month. Separately, Venmo runs Limited Time Offers that you must activate before a purchase.
Where the program came from
PayPal’s newsroom announced on November 10, 2025 that Venmo was launching Venmo Stash, initially for Venmo Debit Card customers, with cash back credited to a Venmo balance. In the launch release, Diego Scotti, General Manager of Consumer at PayPal, said: “Traditional rewards programs make customers work for points they may never use. Venmo Stash flips that model—rewarding spending and money management habits our customers have already built with Venmo.”

On April 15, 2026, Venmo announced an expansion to selected merchants in its checkout network. Alexis Sowa, General Manager of Venmo at PayPal, said in that announcement: “Venmo has always been where money moves between people, and now it is where millions choose to spend, in-app, in-store, and on-the-go.”
The rules described below are Venmo’s current published terms (its Debit Card product page, Always-on Cash Back help text and User Agreement, as of 2026). They are not the same as the rules Venmo announced at launch, which are covered in their own section.

How the current tiers work
Always-on cash back is set by a tier that depends on how much you spend in a calendar month:
| Tier | Qualifying monthly spend | Cash back rate |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Not stated; applies by default | 1% |
| Second tier | $250 in qualifying monthly spend | 2% |
| Top tier | $1,500 in qualifying monthly spend | 5% |
What counts as qualifying spend
According to the User Agreement, the tier is based on eligible purchases posted in a calendar month. Purchases made with a Venmo account or the Venmo Debit Card count toward qualifying spend. Refunded purchases do not count, so a return can lower the total you are measured against.

- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
How a higher tier carries forward
Once you reach a higher tier, Venmo says that rate can apply for the rest of that month and the following month. The carry-forward is the one feature that lets you benefit from a threshold you crossed partway through a month, but it is Venmo’s stated policy and the terms should be checked if you rely on it.
Where the rate applies
Always-on cash back applies at participating Stash brands when you pay with the Venmo Debit Card or through Venmo checkout. It does not apply to every purchase. Venmo checkout is not available at every merchant, and the reward rate applies only at eligible Stash brands, so a 5% tier does not mean 5% everywhere.

Several conditions narrow what counts:
- The named merchant generally has to be the merchant of record on the transaction.
- Cash withdrawals are excluded.
- The cash-back portion of a transaction at a merchant is excluded.
- Merchant eligibility and reward structures may change, so the list in the app is the one to trust over any older article.
Always-on cash back and Limited Time Offers
These are two separate layers. Always-on cash back works in the background once you are enrolled. Limited Time Offers are time-bound promotions that you have to opt into for each one.
| Feature | Always-on cash back | Limited Time Offers |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | Automatic after enrollment; no per-merchant activation | Must be activated in the app before the qualifying purchase |
| Rate and limits | Tier rate of 1%, 2% or 5%, with a $100 monthly maximum | Set by each offer; the offer’s own percentage, expiry, eligible payment method, redemption window and cap apply |
| Governing terms | Venmo’s current product page, help text and User Agreement | The individual offer’s terms, which control |
How to use a Limited Time Offer
- Confirm that you are enrolled in Venmo Stash, since always-on cash back depends on enrollment.
- Open the offer in the Venmo app and activate it before you make the purchase. An offer activated after the qualifying purchase should not be assumed to apply.
- Read the offer’s expiry date, eligible payment method, redemption window, percentage and cap.
- Pay with the payment method the offer specifies, at a participating merchant.
- Check the transaction and the credit once it posts, and compare it with the offer’s stated cap.
The $100 monthly cap
Venmo states a maximum of $100 cash back per calendar month across always-on cash-back brands. Each Limited Time Offer sets its own cap, so check the offer rather than assuming the same limit applies.

The cap is reached faster at higher rates. The figures below are simple arithmetic on the stated rates, not an example Venmo has published:
| Cash back rate | Eligible purchases needed in one month to reach $100 |
|---|---|
| 1% | $10,000 |
| 2% | $5,000 |
| 5% | $2,000 |
For most households, the practical meaning is that the 5% tier is worth less at high spend than it appears. Once you pass $2,000 in eligible purchases at the 5% rate, additional eligible spending in that month earns nothing further from always-on cash back.

Launch rules versus current rules
The launch announcement from November 2025 described different conditions. These are historical, and they should not be read as the current rule.
| Period | Rate | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| November 2025 launch | 2% | Turning on auto reloads |
| November 2025 launch | 5% | At least $500 in monthly direct deposits |
| Current published terms (2026) | 1%, 2%, 5% | Qualifying monthly spend of $250 (2%) and $1,500 (5%) |
If you enrolled at launch and set up auto reloads or direct deposits, do not assume those actions still determine your rate. Check your current tier against the spend thresholds above.
When rewards post, and what can reverse them
Venmo’s help text says always-on cash back is typically credited within a few days, and sometimes immediately. The User Agreement allows crediting up to 90 days after a qualifying purchase is complete. The difference matters if you are tracking a balance: the merchant and when the transaction completes can both affect timing.
Refunds can reduce rewards you have earned. If a reward has already been paid and the underlying purchase is later refunded, Venmo can debit the reward back from your balance. For that reason, a large return late in the month can change both your tier and your earned total.

Card basics that affect the value
- Venmo says the card has no monthly fee.
- The card spends your Venmo balance, so purchases draw on funds you already hold in Venmo.
- The card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. pursuant to a Mastercard license.
- Some ATM and over-the-counter withdrawals may carry fees. Check the current card terms before withdrawing cash, because the cash-back program excludes cash withdrawals anyway.
Before you rely on Venmo Stash
- Confirm enrollment and your current tier in the app, not from older launch-era descriptions.
- Check that the merchant is a participating Stash brand, and that Venmo checkout is accepted where you shop.
- Track qualifying spend net of refunds, since returns lower the total that determines your tier.
- Activate any Limited Time Offer before the qualifying purchase, and note its expiry and cap.
- Remember the $100 monthly cap, and expect credits to post within a few days or, under the agreement, up to 90 days after purchase.
