Veeam has acquired Object First, the company behind Ootbi, an immutable backup-storage appliance designed for Veeam environments. The deal was reported in early January 2026 and listed as completed on January 14, 2026, by Veeam’s Swiss legal adviser. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition gives Veeam a first-party on-premises storage option without announcing that Ootbi is mandatory. Veeam continues to present its software as compatible with customer-selected repositories, third-party object storage and Veeam’s cloud-storage services.
What Veeam bought
CRN reported Veeam’s confirmation of the Object First acquisition, while Lenz & Staehelin lists the transaction as completed on January 14, 2026. Neither source disclosed a purchase price, staffing plan or detailed integration timetable.
Object First remains identified with Ootbi, subject to any later rebranding or integration announcement. The company was founded by Ratmir Timashev and Andrei Baronov, who also co-founded Veeam, and emerged from stealth in 2022. Its CEO is David Bennet, formerly associated with Axcient.

Object First is not a general-purpose storage supplier. Its product strategy centered on a narrowly integrated backup target for Veeam, intended to simplify the design of immutable storage.
CRN’s acquisition report and the legal-adviser notice are the clearest public confirmations currently available.
What Ootbi does
Ootbi means “Out-of-the-Box Immutability.” It is an on-premises, S3-compatible object-storage appliance for Veeam backup workloads. Object First’s datasheet describes S3 Object Lock, a hardened Linux operating system and a Zero Trust design. Initial setup is described as requiring three IP addresses, credentials and multifactor authentication.
| Capability | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Veeam compatibility | Version 12 and later, according to the surfaced Object First datasheet |
| Protocol | S3-compatible object storage |
| Cluster size | Up to four nodes per cluster |
| Capacity | Approximately 20 TB to 7 PB, depending on appliance, clustering and multi-cluster deployment |
| Usable capacity | Up to about 1.7 PB per cluster in listed configurations |
| Performance | Object First materials claim up to 1–2 GB/s per node and up to 8 GB/s for a four-node cluster |
| Instant Recovery | Up to 45 concurrent Veeam Instant Recovery VMs per node in the cited high-end configuration |
| Acquisition models | CapEx and consumption-based models; consumption availability varies by region |
| Deployment claim | 15 minutes or less, excluding site preparation and broader Veeam configuration |
These are vendor-published specifications. The 7 PB figure describes the broader scalable architecture, not one appliance or necessarily one four-node cluster. Likewise, the 8 GB/s figure is a manufacturer claim; actual throughput depends on networks, source systems, concurrency, compression, encryption, job settings and contention.

Why Veeam wants a first-party appliance
Veeam’s software-first model gives customers broad storage choice, but designing a hardened repository can require Linux, storage and security expertise. A pre-integrated appliance can reduce deployment decisions and configuration errors, provide predictable local restore performance and give customers one supplier for the hardware-and-software target.
It also gives Veeam more influence over the target’s support experience, performance profile and roadmap. Ootbi provides an on-premises complement to Veeam’s managed cloud-storage offerings, rather than turning Veeam into a conventional general-purpose storage company.
CRN quoted Veeam’s rationale as customer simplicity. That supports an interpretation of Ootbi as a turnkey option added to the portfolio, not a replacement for every repository model.

Does this end Veeam’s storage-agnostic strategy?
There is no announced requirement that customers use Ootbi. Veeam’s purchasing page continues to describe customer-selected on-premises and cloud object storage. Industry coverage also reported that existing Veeam and Object First partner programs were continuing separately during integration.
The balance does change: Veeam now owns a storage target optimized for its software and can offer a simpler one-vendor purchase. Storage suppliers that compete for Veeam repository workloads therefore face a stronger first-party alternative. Future roadmap, pricing or channel decisions could alter that balance, but no such changes were verified.
Impact on customers and partners
Existing Ootbi customers
The acquisition may improve long-term integration and supplier stability, but no public notice established changes to warranties, renewals, licensing or support. Customers should obtain written confirmation of:
- First-line support and escalation ownership.
- Warranty and hardware-replacement responsibility.
- Renewal and consumption-contract treatment.
- Firmware and security-update commitments.
- Compatibility with the exact Veeam Backup & Replication release and patch level.
- Whether the current Object First reseller remains the commercial contact.
Veeam customers considering new infrastructure
Ootbi is most compelling where local immutable storage, fast restores and simple deployment matter more than hardware flexibility. Organizations with suitable existing storage or strong Linux expertise may gain little from replacing a working design.

Veeam partners and managed-service providers
Partners gain a standardized appliance to quote between do-it-yourself repositories and managed cloud storage. They should nevertheless clarify deal registration, distribution, margins, support ownership and channel-conflict rules. A first-party appliance could reduce custom repository-design work even as it creates a new deployment opportunity.

| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ootbi appliance | Turnkey local immutable storage and Veeam-specific integration | Dedicated hardware can reduce flexibility; expansion may require additional nodes or clusters |
| Hardened Linux repository | Teams with Linux expertise, existing servers or a need for hardware choice | Customer owns design, hardening, patching, lifecycle and configuration risk |
| Third-party S3-compatible storage | Organizations standardized on object storage or needing independent vendors | API, retrieval, egress, compatibility and performance requirements vary |
| Veeam Data Cloud Vault | Managed off-site storage with less infrastructure administration | It is cloud storage, not a local appliance, and depends on connectivity, region and data-residency requirements |
Veeam lists Data Cloud Vault Foundation at $14/TB/month and Advanced at $24/TB/month, with storage, API calls and egress included according to its page. Prices can vary by region and sales channel. See the official Vault page. Ootbi pricing was not publicly verified; its consumption availability is region-dependent and requires a quote.
Immutability is only one part of resilience
Ootbi can be a strong local recovery tier, but it does not replace a complete 3-2-1-1-0 design. Object Lock can prevent alteration or deletion during a retention period, yet it does not by itself prevent theft, fire, site loss, compromised credentials, network-segmentation failure or destruction of the appliance.
- Keep a second copy in a different geographic or operational failure domain.
- Separate administrative identities and management paths.
- Set retention longer than the organization’s assumed attacker dwell time.
- Verify recoverability through regular restore tests at the required scale.
- Distinguish logical immutability from offline or physically disconnected copies.
Use “immutable” or “ransomware-resistant” precisely. Object First has used “ransomware-proof” in its own marketing, but no repository is invulnerable in every operational and physical scenario.
Buyer checklist
- Calculate required usable capacity after retention, growth, protection overhead and free space—not raw disk capacity.
- Map recovery-point and recovery-time objectives to local ingest and restore workloads.
- Validate Object Lock retention, administrative separation and credential-recovery procedures.
- Confirm the exact Veeam version, patch level and supported APIs; Veeam’s Object First compatibility page and additional compatibility page should be checked before purchase.
- Request workload-specific ingest and restore results rather than relying only on headline throughput.
- Ask whether growth requires nodes, additional clusters or a Scale-Out Backup Repository design.
- Compare CapEx with consumption pricing, support, renewals and hardware refresh costs in your region.
- Get written confirmation of support ownership, warranty terms and replacement times.
- Decide where the second copy will live and how recovery will be tested after a site-wide incident.
- Assess whether supplier concentration is acceptable for your organization.
What remains unknown
Public reporting does not establish the purchase price, employee arrangements, detailed integration milestones, future Ootbi pricing, support-contract transitions or whether Ootbi will receive deeper licensing integration. Those questions should be treated as procurement items, not assumptions.
The Bottom Line
Veeam’s Object First acquisition adds a stronger first-party, turnkey option for immutable local backup storage. It does not make Ootbi mandatory or prove it is universally superior: the right choice still depends on usable capacity, recovery objectives, existing infrastructure, operational skills, isolation requirements and the need for a separate off-site copy.
