Discord’s Premium Apps system lets eligible bot and Activity developers sell subscriptions and digital items through native Discord checkout. Discord handles checkout, billing, fraud detection and receipts, while developers manage the product, entitlements and customer support.
The system can be attractive when users already spend their time in Discord. It remains subject to regional eligibility, policy restrictions, platform fees, payout delays and the ordinary challenge of building something people will keep paying for.
What Discord has changed
Premium Apps turns monetization into a platform feature rather than a payment project assembled from separate services. Developers can create paid offerings, show them on an App Directory Store page, and prompt purchases inside Discord. Discord describes the system and its supported products at its Premium Apps documentation.

This reduces integration work; it does not remove hosting, product analytics, marketing, feature support or the need for your own reliable access-control logic.

What developers can sell
User subscriptions
A user subscription follows an individual across servers where the app is installed. It suits premium commands, analytics, productivity features and other personal access. Details are in Discord’s subscription implementation guide.
Guild subscriptions
A guild subscription benefits members of a particular server, allowing one purchaser—often an owner or administrator—to fund server-wide moderation, automation, analytics or Activity features.
Durable purchases
Durable SKUs provide a permanent upgrade or lifetime entitlement, such as a bot unlock or cosmetic item.
Consumable purchases
Consumables represent items used up over time, including credits, boosts, tokens and game power-ups. Discord’s rules for both purchase types are documented at its one-time-purchase guide.

How the money flows
For a developer team’s first $1 million in cumulative Premium Apps gross sales, Discord says the developer receives 85% of user payments before applicable payment-processing and transaction fees. Once that cumulative threshold is reached, Discord’s platform fee returns to 30%, leaving a 70% platform split before those other deductions. Refunds, chargebacks, currency conversion and mobile-store costs can further reduce the payout. See Discord’s payout terms.

This is an illustration, not a guaranteed net rate. Discord processes payouts through Stripe. The first payout becomes available after the app reaches $100, subject to review. Later payouts are made within 45 days after the end of each calendar month; balances under $25 at payout time carry forward. What implementation actually requires
Each product begins as a SKU. After purchase, Discord creates an entitlement that your app uses to grant the promised benefit.
- Create or join a developer team and verify the app.
- Complete eligibility, payout and policy onboarding.
- Create SKUs, prices and descriptions in the Developer Portal.
- Implement entitlement checks and map each SKU to a feature or item.
- Handle subscription events including
ENTITLEMENT_CREATE,ENTITLEMENT_UPDATEandENTITLEMENT_DELETE. - Reconcile Gateway events with Discord’s HTTP API and store entitlement state in your database.
- Add premium buttons or direct users to the Store page.
- Test active, expired, cancelled, refunded and unsubscribed states.
For subscriptions, do not rely on one event arriving exactly once. Make grants idempotent and plan for delayed, duplicated or out-of-order notifications. A deleted entitlement can mean access must be revoked. For consumables, process and consume the entitlement before the same SKU can be purchased again.

Discord provides test entitlements for subscription states. One-time purchases use Application Test Mode, which requires a valid payment method on file but does not charge the tester. The relevant technical references are the subscription guide and the purchase guide.
Who can monetize?
Premium Apps is not globally open. Discord currently lists availability for developers in the United States, United Kingdom and European Union, with expansion planned. Typical requirements include:
- A verified app owned by a developer team.
- A team owner who is at least 18.
- Verified team email addresses and two-factor authentication.
- Slash-command support or approval for the privileged Message Content intent.
- Terms of Service and Privacy Policy links.
- A valid payout method and agreement to Discord’s monetization terms and Developer Policy.
A working bot can therefore be distributable without being monetization-eligible, and eligibility does not guarantee payout approval.
Why native monetization can help
Less checkout friction
Users can buy without leaving Discord or creating a separate billing account. That is particularly useful for small subscriptions and impulse purchases, although Discord does not guarantee a conversion increase.

Discovery alongside checkout
A Store page and App Directory exposure can put an offering in front of potential users before installation. For many small teams, distribution may matter as much as payment integration.
Server-level pricing
Guild subscriptions let a community pay once for shared functionality rather than requiring every member to subscribe individually.
Digital-goods flexibility
Durable and consumable SKUs cover both software upgrades and game-like inventories.

Platform dependence and fees
You trade custom payment work for dependence on Discord’s rules, identity system, discovery surfaces and payout schedule. The 15% introductory platform fee is not permanent at scale.

Purchase-support and price-parity rules
Since October 7, 2024, in supported regions, developers offering paid app features covered by Premium Apps must support purchase through Discord and cannot charge more on Discord for the same supported offering. Read the Developer Policy for scope and exceptions. External systems can still be used, but they do not necessarily replace the Discord purchase path.
Mobile documentation is inconsistent
Discord’s Monetization Terms discuss possible mobile-store fees while also containing language that mobile transactions are not currently available. Verify the live iOS and Android experience before setting mobile prices or making a launch promise.
The seller still owns delivery
Developers remain responsible for accurately describing benefits, delivering them, handling cancellations, refunds and chargebacks, and honoring promised features. Changing or withdrawing a material benefit can create refund obligations.

Choose Discord-native monetization when
- The paid value is delivered primarily inside Discord.
- Your audience already trusts the app and spends time there.
- Native checkout or server billing could reduce friction.
- App Directory exposure is useful.
- You accept Discord’s fees, policies and supported-country limits.
Use external checkout, or combine it with Discord, when
- You have a substantial web or mobile business outside Discord.
- Customer ownership, invoicing or billing portability is central.
- You sell consulting, courses, content or services rather than app functionality.
- You need advanced enterprise billing or pricing models Discord does not support.
- Your customers are spread across several communities and platforms.
Bottom line for developers
Discord has made monetization materially more accessible by combining native checkout, entitlement infrastructure and limited discovery with support for subscriptions and digital goods. The strongest business case is a low-marginal-cost bot or Activity with an obvious in-Discord benefit and, ideally, a useful server-wide plan.
It is not a guaranteed revenue engine. Before launching, model both platform-fee tiers, processing deductions, payout timing, refund exposure and the cost of keeping the product reliable. Treat Discord as a powerful distribution and payment channel—not as a replacement for product quality, retention or customer acquisition.
