The Economic Times reported October 14 as the record date and said Vedanta shares rose more than 3% on October 6. The demerger changes which businesses sit inside Vedanta, but neither the record date nor the share-price move guarantees a dividend or its size.
What is known about the prospective dividend?
The Economic Times reported that Vedanta’s board was scheduled to consider a first interim dividend for FY2026–27 on October 8, 2026, and that October 14 was set as the record date. At the report’s October 6 publication, the board decision and payout amount were still prospective. The report does not establish that a dividend was approved. The Economic Times report
The same report said Vedanta shares gained more than 3% on October 6 after the record-date news. That is a reported market movement, not proof that a dividend had been approved or an official explanation of why the shares rose.
Record date is not approval
A record date identifies the date used to determine shareholder eligibility for a corporate action. It does not, by itself, establish that the board has approved a payout or specify its amount. For the October 2026 dividend, the board’s scheduled consideration was October 8; the available report did not give a declared per-share amount.

Check the company and exchange notice
Because the reported board meeting and record date are time-sensitive, investors should check Vedanta’s official announcement and the relevant exchange filing for the board outcome, final amount, record date and operational eligibility terms. The Economic Times report described October 13 as the last buy date under T+1 settlement and said shares needed to be in a demat account as of October 14. Confirm those details in the official filing before acting.
How the demerger changes Vedanta’s dividend picture
The demerger separates four businesses into resulting companies, so a future dividend from the remaining Vedanta will reflect a different business mix from the historical group. Vedanta’s official release designated May 1, 2026, as the effective date and the record date for determining shareholders entitled to shares in the resulting companies. For each eligible Vedanta share, the announced entitlement was one share in each of the four companies below. Vedanta’s official demerger release
Rank #2
| Resulting company | Entitlement for each eligible Vedanta share |
|---|---|
| Vedanta Aluminium Metal Limited | One share |
| Vedanta Power Limited (formerly Talwandi Sabo Power Limited) | One share |
| Vedanta Oil & Gas Limited (formerly Malco Energy Limited) | One share |
| Vedanta Iron and Steel Limited | One share |
The May 1 record date concerns entitlement to shares in the resulting companies. It is separate from the reported October 14 record date for the prospective interim dividend.
Why future payouts may not match the old group’s history
The Economic Times reported that the October proposal would be Vedanta’s first dividend since the demerger and quoted Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, on the possible effect of the changed business mix. Agrawal’s view was that the residual Vedanta could remain a dividend-paying company, while its absolute dividend per share could be structurally lower because large cash-generating businesses have been carved out. He also said that the remaining company’s payout could depend more heavily on Hindustan Zinc earnings and become more sensitive to zinc and silver prices. The demerged companies and the remaining Vedanta are separate entities; any dividend from one should be assessed on that company’s own declarations and eligibility terms. The allotment of shares does not mean that each company will pay a dividend, or that their combined future payouts will equal Vedanta’s past distributions.

Vedanta’s shareholder information records an ₹11-per-share third interim dividend for FY2025–26, dated March 23, 2026, as well as ₹16 per share in August 2025 and ₹7 per share in July 2025. These are historical company decisions, not a schedule or promise for FY2026–27. Vedanta shareholder dividend information

The Economic Times also reported that Vedanta had declared 49 dividends since July 23, 2001. That count describes past declarations; it does not establish a future payout. Its report’s yield figure was tied to the share price at the time of writing and is therefore not a fixed or current return measure.

How to assess the announcement as a shareholder
- Separate the dates: May 1, 2026, was the demerger entitlement date; October 14 was reported as the record date for a prospective FY2026–27 interim dividend.
- Wait for the decision: the amount was not established in the October 6 report; check the board outcome and company or exchange filing rather than inferring approval from a record date or share-price move.
- Verify eligibility mechanics: use the official notice to confirm the applicable record date, settlement timing and any other conditions relevant to your holding.
- Evaluate each company independently: consider the relevant business, earnings drivers, declared dividend and eligibility terms. Historical group payouts and projected yields are not guarantees of future distributions.
