VanMoof’s S6 and S6 Open introduce tangible design and serviceability changes, but the available evidence cannot establish long-term reliability. That distinction matters when the listed price is €3,298: buyers can assess the hardware and warranty now, but not yet whether the bikes will stay trouble-free over years of use. Before paying a premium, check that a local authorized VanMoof Partner services S6 bikes and confirm the warranty terms for your country.
What changed after VanMoof’s bankruptcy?
VanMoof entered bankruptcy in 2023 and was acquired by McLaren Applied. The S6 is the first new e-bike family developed under the company’s new leadership, rather than proof that the earlier business has simply resumed unchanged. The Verge’s June 2025 hands-on described the S6 as a post-acquisition product; VanMoof said the S6 and S6 Open had been on sale in Europe since summer 2025 when it announced their UK arrival in April 2026 (The Verge; VanMoof’s UK announcement).
The redesign includes a three-speed mechanical AutoShift hub in place of the previous electronic shifting approach, and modular wiring intended to make components easier to service. VanMoof also describes an updated Control Core, app unlocking and Touch Unlock. These are specific changes to the product and its support ecosystem; they are not multi-year reliability results.
What do the S6 and S6 Open offer?
VanMoof’s product page lists a maximum speed of 25 km/h, motor torque of 68 Nm, a claimed range of 60–150 km and four power levels. The range is a manufacturer figure, not a guaranteed distance: real-world results can vary. The company lists the S6 at €3,298; prices, availability and specifications may change, so check the live product page before buying (VanMoof S6 product page).

Fit ranges are manufacturer guidance, not a substitute for a test ride. The lower frame may be easier to step through, while the wheel size, posture and listed weight affect how each bike feels and where it can be stored or carried. The Verge’s weights are launch-era reported figures; verify current technical details with VanMoof before purchase. It also reported a 487 Wh Panasonic battery integrated into the frame but removable for service, and about four hours to charge from 25% to 100%—useful ownership details to check against the current specification sheet, particularly if you will carry the bike up stairs or need to plan charging.
Does the evidence show that the S6 is reliable?
Not yet. The Verge’s Thomas Ricker rode a pre-production S6 for about 15 minutes and described the shifting as smooth and intuitive and the ride as pleasant. He also said that he could not judge reliability on such a short ride. A launch ride can offer a first impression of handling and controls; it cannot establish durability across years of commuting, weather, repairs and battery cycles.

The sources available for this article provide no independently published S6 failure rate, multi-year durability study, repair turnaround statistic or warranty-claim outcome rate. Owner stories may describe individual experiences, but they are not representative reliability data. VanMoof co-CEO Eliott Wertheimer told The Verge, “We looked at every element of our line-up and made improvements.” That is the company’s position, not an independent reliability finding. Ricker’s June 10, 2025 assessment put the purchase question plainly: “The real trick will be convincing riders to pay €3,298 for the promise of longevity.”
What does the warranty cover?
VanMoof’s warranty and support page, updated May 7, 2026, lists three years of coverage for frame defects and parts and accessories. Battery, motor and ECU coverage is subject to different time and distance limits by region:

Those limits are not a summary of every warranty condition. The same page identifies modifications, improper maintenance, accident damage and non-approved replacement parts among circumstances that can void coverage. Claims are handled through a local VanMoof Partner; the page says to provide original proof of purchase and that VanMoof settles covered parts and labor directly. Service access is a practical part of the purchase, not a detail to leave until a fault occurs. The Verge reported about 250 service shops and 130 sales partners across 13 countries in June 2025. Those are historical launch-era figures, not a current network count or evidence that a shop near you can service the S6.

VanMoof’s Partner Hub described a warranty-claim process in August 2026 that depends on Repair Mode and partner parts ordering. That indicates a defined workflow, but does not show how much local capacity is available or how quickly a claim will be resolved. Before purchasing, ask the specific Partner who would handle your bike whether it services S6 models, how warranty claims are submitted, and what happens if a required part is unavailable. VanMoof’s help article explains the S6’s controls and support features (S6 and S6 Open help); its Partner Hub warranty-process post describes the partner workflow.
What should a buyer weigh before paying the premium?
The case for the S6 is more concrete than a promise alone: it has a mechanical shifting system, modular wiring, a published regional warranty and a partner-based repair route. But none of those facts establishes how often repairs will be needed or how smoothly a particular local claim will go. Put the known purchase costs and obligations next to the unresolved questions before deciding.

- Fit and daily use: Compare the standard and lower frames, test the riding position if possible, and account for the reported carrying weights if stairs or storage are part of your routine.
- Local support: Verify that a nearby authorized Partner services the S6 and ask how warranty intake and parts ordering work.
- Warranty in your region: Check the time and distance cap for battery, motor and ECU coverage, as well as exclusions and proof-of-purchase requirements.
- Connected and theft features: VanMoof advertises always-on tracking and Theft Proof as an add-on. Treat recovery or replacement language as a company service promise and check its current terms; the existence of the feature does not establish recovery outcomes.
- Price versus uncertainty: Compare the S6’s price and local repair options with any alternative you are considering. The available sources do not provide a complete competitor comparison, so they do not support naming a best-in-class choice.
