USPS’s temporary 2026 holiday price adjustment took effect October 4 and applies to domestic Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select through midnight Central on January 17, 2027. The increase is not one flat fee: it varies by service, destination zone, weight, price type, and—in some commercial categories—cubic tier. To control the cost, compare the current price for your actual package rather than applying a general surcharge to every shipment.
When the seasonal increase applies
The Postal Service announced the temporary adjustment on August 25, 2026, and confirmed its effective date in an October 4 notice. It applies to domestic competitive package products during this period; USPS says other products and services are not affected by this particular seasonal adjustment. That does not mean other USPS prices could not change separately during 2026. The adjustment is temporary, not a year-round increase. USPS’s announcement says the change is intended to help cover extra peak-season handling costs.

The affected services are Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. The increase is added to the applicable underlying price; the figures below are increases, not the total postage due. Retail and commercial schedules differ, so use the schedule that applies to the way you are buying postage.

For retail Priority Mail and Ground Advantage parcels in Zones 1–4, the seasonal increase depends on weight. In Zones 5–9, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage have different increases.

These are USPS’s 2026 published retail increases for the listed weight bands and zones. Check the applicable USPS price schedule for the actual total, including the underlying price for your package. Notice 123 is effective October 4, 2026.
Priority Mail Flat Rate
Retail Priority Mail Flat Rate increases by $2.10 for a Large Flat Rate Box and $1.00 for other Flat Rate products. For commercial Priority Mail Flat Rate, the increase is $1.75 for a Large Flat Rate Box and $0.85 for other Flat Rate products. These are separate from the weight-band figures above. Compare the applicable Flat Rate price with the priced-by-weight option for your package and destination before choosing.

Commercial prices and other affected services
Commercial rates have their own increases. For example, USPS lists a $0.40 increase for commercial Priority Mail and Ground Advantage shipments to Zones 1–4 in the 0–3 lb range and applicable low cubic tiers; commercial Ground Advantage to Zones 5–9 rises by $0.55 for 0–3 lb and applicable low cubic tiers. Those examples are not a complete commercial rate table. Eligibility and exact totals depend on the service and shipment details.

How to compare prices and keep postage in check
- Gather the shipment details. Weigh the parcel and measure its dimensions, then note the destination ZIP code and the service you need. Weight and, for some commercial categories, cubic tier affect the applicable price. USPS’s current price schedules and mailing rules are the official reference.
- Compare the right price type. Check the retail rate if you are buying at retail; if you qualify for a commercial price, use that applicable schedule instead. Do not assume a commercial example applies to every sender or package.
- Price Flat Rate against the alternative. Check whether the item fits an eligible Flat Rate package, then compare its total with the applicable weight- and destination-based option. Flat Rate is not automatically cheaper.
- Check USPS packaging guidance and free supplies. USPS provides packaging guidance and information on free shipping supplies. Review the available options before buying packaging; a USPS-branded box or paid supplies are not prerequisites for a lower rate.
- Choose a service that fits both budget and timing. Compare the shipment’s final price with the recommended holiday mailing date for that service and destination.
- Verify the total before purchasing postage. Use the current USPS schedule or price tool with the package’s actual details. Do not rely on a remembered pre-holiday price or apply a single seasonal increase to every package.
Recommended USPS holiday mailing dates for domestic packages
For expected delivery before December 25, USPS recommends these mailing dates for packages:

These are USPS recommendations, not delivery guarantees. USPS advises sending packages early. Do not apply these domestic dates to military or international destinations; USPS provides separate suggested dates for those addresses on its holiday shipping dates page.
