USDA’s May 27, 2025, Crop Progress report included the season’s first corn condition ratings. For the week ending May 25, 68% of the crop was rated good or excellent, 27% fair, and 5% poor or very poor. Corn planting and emergence were also ahead of their cited five-year averages across the top 18 corn-growing states.

What were the first 2025 corn condition ratings?

The May 27 report—the eighth Crop Progress report of the 2025 growing season—summarized conditions observed for the week ending May 25. Mariah Squire’s May 28, 2025, report for Agriculture.com / Successful Farming gave the national distribution as follows:

Grouped condition rating Share of corn
Good or excellent 68%
Fair 27%
Poor or very poor 5%

The three groupings combine USDA’s five underlying condition categories: very poor, poor, fair, good, and excellent. These are historical weekly estimates, not current 2026 ratings.

How much corn was planted and emerged?

Across the top 18 corn-growing states, the report summary put planting at 87%, compared with a five-year average of 85%. It put emergence at 67%, compared with a five-year average of 60%. Both progress measures were therefore ahead of their cited averages for the week ending May 25, 2025.

What do crop progress and crop condition measure?

They describe different things. USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) explains in its Crop Progress and Conditions: Surveys Guide that progress estimates the percentage of a crop at or beyond a specified development stage. Condition estimates the percentage in each of five categories, from very poor to excellent. A crop can be further along in planting or emergence without that measure itself describing its condition.

NASS says reporters respond as of Sunday. Surveys are conducted weekly during the growing season, while field offices report agricultural activities monthly in winter. The resulting state and U.S. estimates are intended to help producers, agribusinesses, and traders assess growing conditions and reduce or eliminate inherent business risks.

Where to find the original USDA reports

NASS’s 2025 Crop Progress and Conditions archive provides access to national and state materials. The figures above are the national summary reported by Agriculture.com; a state-level condition comparison should be checked in the applicable original USDA issue rather than inferred from the national totals.
