The larger crop is relevant to supply and potential price pressure, but the available figures do not prove that the harvest caused a specific price decline or lower farmer incomes.
How much corn did the U.S. produce in 2025?
NASS estimated 2025 U.S. corn-for-grain production at 17.0 billion bushels, a record and a 14% increase from the 2024 estimate. The agency also estimated a record national average yield of 186.5 bushels per acre. These are estimates reported in the January 12, 2026 Crop Production 2025 Summary, not a final count guaranteed never to change.
NASS says its estimates are subject to sampling and other errors, and that an estimate may be revised the following year if new information supports a change. The reported record is therefore the agency’s estimate as of that summary.
Why can a record corn crop put pressure on prices?
A larger harvest adds to available supply. In its January 2026 outlook, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) said the updated production estimate and larger carry-in raised projected U.S. corn supplies. ERS projected 2025/26 ending stocks above 2.2 billion bushels, the highest since 2018/19. That is a marketing-year forecast, not an observation of a particular cash or futures price. More supply and larger projected stocks can be relevant context for prices because buyers have more grain available relative to use. But those figures alone do not establish how much prices changed, or show that the record crop by itself caused a price decline. A claim about realized prices would need a dated price series and a defined market, such as a location-specific cash price or a futures contract.
The production estimate and supply outlook also come from different parts of USDA’s reporting system: NASS provides crop production estimates, while ERS describes the interagency outlook process coordinated by the World Agricultural Outlook Board, which issues WASDE. The agencies’ roles and process are outlined in the ERS agricultural baseline database.

Does a record harvest mean farmers earned less?
Not by itself. A record crop can affect the supply backdrop, but a production estimate is not a measure of an individual farm’s revenue or profit. Earnings depend on factors such as the price received, the amount each farm marketed, yields and expenses; the national production figure does not isolate those effects.
ERS’s September 2026 national farm income estimate provides broad context, not a corn-only measure of the record crop’s effect. For calendar year 2025, corn and soybeans together generated $104.1 billion, or 43.7% of the $238.4 billion in total U.S. crop cash receipts. That combined figure is not corn-only revenue, profit or net farm income. ERS explains its 2025 estimate and revision history here.

ERS defines net farm income as income after production expenses, incorporating cash and noncash items and changes in inventories. It is therefore different from crop cash receipts. The September estimate incorporated newly available NASS cash-receipt data and preliminary Agricultural Resource Management Survey information, particularly on expenses. The available figures do not establish that record corn production caused farmers’ net incomes to fall.
