USDA Crop Report: Corn and Soybean Ratings Slip in Early October

No. In the USDA report released October 5, 2026, both national crop-condition ratings edged lower for the week ending October 4: corn’s good-to-excellent share fell 3 percentage points to 54%, while soybeans’ fell 1 point to 57%.

How corn and soybean condition ratings changed

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) assigns acreage to five condition categories. The October 5 report showed this national distribution:

Crop Very poor Poor Fair Good Excellent Good + excellent Change from previous week
Corn 6% 12% 28% 42% 12% 54% Down 3 percentage points, from 57%
Soybeans 6% 8% 29% 44% 13% 57% Down 1 percentage point, from 58%

“Good to excellent” is shorthand for adding the good and excellent categories; it is not a separate USDA rating. The full distribution matters: it shows how estimates are spread across all five categories rather than compressing them into one combined share. The figures are national, and state results vary. The October 5 USDA Crop Progress report includes selected-state tables for both crops.

Condition ratings are not harvest progress or yield

Condition estimates describe how reporters assess the crop as of Sunday, assigning acreage among very poor, poor, fair, good, and excellent. Progress figures instead track the share of a crop that has reached a stage or activity, such as maturity or harvest. Neither measure is a direct field-by-field measurement or a final yield forecast.

How USDA compiles its weekly estimates

NASS asks state reporters to estimate crop progress and condition as of Sunday. Reporters are largely extension agents and Farm Service Agency staff. All states participate, and returned weekly reports account for over 75% of acreage for major commodities, according to the NASS Crop Progress and Conditions Survey methodology.

NASS publishes the weekly growing-season report at 4:00 p.m. on the first business day of the week from April 1 through November 30. The October 5, 2026 release covers the week ending Sunday, October 4.

How to read the national summary

  • Use the week-over-week condition percentages to see whether the national estimate improved or declined; the combined good-to-excellent share is a quick summary, not the whole distribution.
  • Use crop-stage and harvest percentages to assess progress, comparing them with the stated historical average rather than treating them as condition ratings.
  • Check the report’s selected-state tables before drawing conclusions about a particular growing region. National percentages can conceal substantial state differences.
