The report is scheduled for October 9 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern, so claims that it held corn and soybean ending stocks steady—or defied market expectations—cannot yet be verified. The latest available stock figures are a different measure: observed grain inventories on September 1.
When will USDA release the October 2026 WASDE?
USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board (WAOB) lists the October 2026 WASDE for October 9 at 12:00 p.m. ET. WASDE is a monthly report of annual U.S. and world supply-and-use estimates for crops including corn and soybeans. Its estimates include forecast ending stocks; the October report was still in the future on October 8. USDA’s WASDE schedule and report information.
What does “ending stocks” mean, and why is it not the same as grain stocks?
WASDE ending stocks are a forecast balance-sheet figure for a crop year: the supply USDA estimates will remain after projected use. The September 1 Grain Stocks figures, by contrast, are an observation of grain physically on hand on a particular date. They can inform the supply picture, but they are not interchangeable with a WASDE forecast of ending stocks.
This distinction matters when interpreting a headline about USDA holding stocks “steady.” That claim must be checked against the October WASDE’s forecast and its comparison basis, not inferred from a separate inventory report.

- Corn: 2.10 billion bushels of old-crop stocks on hand September 1, 2026, 35% more than on September 1, 2025.
- Soybeans: September 1, 2026 stocks were down 3% from September 1, 2025. The release summary cited here does not give a soybean total, so a bushel figure cannot be stated from it.

Did USDA defy expectations?
That characterization is not established before the report is released. Verifying it requires both the October WASDE’s actual corn and soybean ending-stock estimates and a dated, attributable source for what the market expected beforehand. A valid comparison should use the same crop year and units, and identify when the expectation was published. Without that comparison, “defied expectations” is not a substantiated conclusion.
Even if a released report shows ending stocks unchanged, that alone would not establish that production, exports, or domestic use were unchanged. Ending stocks reflect the balance of supply and use assumptions; the underlying line items must be checked separately.
