That is a historical reference calculation—not a quote for a transaction.
How to convert USD to JPY
Use this formula:
USD amount × JPY per USD = JPY amount
For example, $100 × 156.4171 = ¥15,641.71. The rate is expressed as yen per U.S. dollar, so multiplying gives the equivalent amount in yen. For a different dollar amount, substitute that amount and the rate you want to use.
Which USD/JPY rate should you use?
Exchange rates depend on the source and observation time. A monthly average, a daily reference observation, an indicative converter display and a transaction quote are different things.

These figures are not interchangeable: the Federal Reserve reports monthly averages, while converter pages show time-sensitive values. None establishes what a particular bank, card, exchange desk or transfer service will offer a customer.

Why a converter result may differ from what you receive
A displayed mid-market or reference rate is useful for estimating value, but it may not be the rate used for your transaction. The Bank of Japan’s USD/JPY spot series, for example, uses the midpoint of bid and offer rates observed at 9:00 and 17:00 Japan time; these are specified daily observation times, not a continuous retail quote. How to compare money-transfer quotes
Compare the amount the recipient actually gets, not only the headline rate. For the same USD amount, check:
- The exchange rate applied to your transaction.
- Any explicit transfer or payment fee.
- The final JPY recipient amount after the rate and fees.
- The estimated delivery time.

What the recent reference rates show
The Federal Reserve’s September 2026 monthly average was 2.4305 yen per dollar lower than its August 2026 monthly average. That comparison describes the two monthly figures; it does not establish why the exchange rate moved.
