To convert US dollars to Indian rupees, multiply the dollar amount by a USD-to-INR rate quoted for a specific time: USD amount × INR per USD = indicative INR amount. For example, XE listed 1 USD = 96.74867184326139 INR at 16:00 UTC on 7 October 2026, making $100 approximately ₹9,674.87 before any provider margin or fees. That dated mid-market figure is an estimate, not a guaranteed amount you will receive.
How to convert USD to INR
- Choose a rate source and check when its USD-to-INR rate was observed.
- Multiply your USD amount by the rate, which should be stated as rupees per US dollar.
- Round the result to the precision you need. For an estimate in rupees, two decimal places are usually useful.
Using XE’s table rate of 96.74867184326139 INR per USD at 16:00 UTC on 7 October 2026: $100 × 96.74867184326139 = ₹9,674.867…, or approximately ₹9,674.87. This is arithmetic using that dated observation, not a live quote. View XE’s dated INR table or use its USD-to-INR converter for a current displayed rate.
Why the USD-to-INR rate changes
An exchange-rate result applies to a particular observation time; it is not a permanent conversion factor. For instance, XE’s table reported 1 USD = 96.74867184326139 INR at 16:00 UTC on 7 October 2026, while a separate XE converter result showed 1 USD = 95.783 INR at 03:45 UTC on 26 September 2026. Those are different observations and should not be combined or treated as current rates. XE table · XE converter
A Wise page excerpt showed 1 USD = 96.8724 INR at 11:25 UTC on 8 October 2026. That is another provider’s observation at a different time, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with XE’s previous-day table figure. Wise USD-to-INR rate history

Mid-market and reference rates are benchmarks, not transfer promises
XE labels its table values mid-market rates for informational purposes and says consumers do not receive that rate when sending money. A converter is useful for estimating value, but a transfer provider may quote a different rate and charge fees. XE’s table information · XE converter information
Official reference rates also have a defined purpose and methodology; they are not retail guarantees. In a 21 April 2016 notice, the Reserve Bank of India said it compiled and published a daily spot USD/INR reference rate and described deriving it from actual market transactions during a randomly selected 15-minute window between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on weekdays, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and Mumbai bank holidays. That notice describes the method at that time. The Indian Economic Service explains that reference rates may differ from exchange-venue and over-the-counter rates, and reports that FBIL took over computation and dissemination. How to check what a USD-to-INR transfer will deliver
If you are sending money to India, use a provider’s live quote rather than relying on a converter’s indicative figure. XE says its transfer quote flow shows the rate, fees, and estimated delivery time before you start. Compare the same USD amount and route across providers, focusing on the INR the recipient will receive, the quoted rate, fees, and delivery estimate; no provider can be called cheapest without a same-time, same-amount comparison.
