Banco Central do Brasil’s closing PTAX on 6 October 2026 was BRL 4.9692 per U.S. dollar on the buy quote and BRL 4.9698 per U.S. dollar on the sell quote. These are Brazilian reais per U.S. dollar, not a guaranteed rate for a customer transaction. Banco Central do Brasil’s PTAX data provides the dated reference.
How much is 1 U.S. dollar in Brazilian reais?
Using the 6 October 2026 closing PTAX buy quote, USD 1 corresponds arithmetically to BRL 4.9692. Using the sell quote, it corresponds to BRL 4.9698. For USD 100, multiplying by the buy quote gives BRL 496.92 before any provider-specific fees or rate differences. These calculations illustrate the reference quotes; they do not establish what a bank, card issuer, remittance service, or cash exchange will pay.
The buy and sell labels are the two sides of Banco Central do Brasil’s published quotation. When comparing rates, check that the figure is expressed in BRL per USD and note which side is being shown.
What the PTAX rate means
PTAX is a Brazilian central-bank reference rate, not a live retail offer. Since 1 July 2011, Banco Central do Brasil has calculated it as the arithmetic average of four exchange-rate quotes provided each day by foreign-exchange dealers. The closing PTAX is the arithmetic average of that day’s bulletins. The central bank explains the PTAX calculation method.

Banco Central do Brasil says its R$/US$ exchange-rate chart is updated daily after the final dealer consultation. Consultations take place four times on working days; the final one occurs during two random minutes between 1:00 and 1:10 p.m. The central bank’s statistics page describes the consultation schedule. The closing rate is therefore a dated daily reference, not a continuously updated or guaranteed customer quote.
Why a conversion service may show a different amount
The central bank’s currency conversion tool warns: “The conversion result is informative only and does not replace the Brazilian exchange rate regulations for specific conversion cases.” A real transaction may use a provider’s own exchange rate and can also be affected by fees, spreads, cash availability, and transaction conditions. Banco Central do Brasil’s conversion page offers historical conversions and explains this limitation.

For an actual transfer, card payment, or cash exchange, compare the provider’s dated transaction quote and the final amount after charges rather than treating PTAX arithmetic as the amount you will receive.
How the latest PTAX compares with other rate releases
Different official rates can answer different questions. For example, the Federal Reserve Board’s G.5 release dated 1 October 2026 reports a September 2026 average of 5.1433 BRL per USD. That average is based on daily noon buying rates for cable transfers in New York City certified for customs purposes by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It is a monthly average, not a 6 October Brazilian closing quote. See the Federal Reserve’s G.5 release.

The Federal Reserve’s H.10 daily release dated 5 October 2026 presents Brazil’s real in U.S. dollars per currency unit—the inverse direction of BRL per USD. Do not read an inverse quote as though it were reais per dollar. The H.10 release identifies its quote direction.
- Quote direction: confirm whether the figure is BRL per USD or USD per BRL.
- Date and period: distinguish a single-day close from a monthly average.
- Method and source: PTAX and the Federal Reserve series are produced using different observations and methodologies.
- Purpose: a reference benchmark is not necessarily a provider’s transaction rate.
Finding a rate for a past date
Banco Central do Brasil’s conversion page provides historical exchange rates after 2 January 1999. For non-working days, it uses the immediately preceding business day’s quotation. That is why a weekend lookup may return a rate from the previous business day rather than a new weekend observation. Check the central bank’s conversion tool for a historical date.
