This guide uses the Nasdaq-100 (ticker NDX) as its main reference, explains how to verify a live reading, and shows why futures or broker-specific prices can differ.
What is the US Tech 100?
In this article, “US Tech 100” means the Nasdaq-100 Index (NDX) unless a provider identifies a different instrument. Nasdaq describes the index as 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Its name does not mean every constituent is a technology company or headquartered in the United States. The index includes companies in sectors such as consumer discretionary and healthcare as well as technology. Nasdaq’s August 19, 2026 explainer describes it as a large-cap index often associated with innovation and growth.
NDX uses modified market-cap weighting: larger companies generally have more influence on its movement, with methodology guardrails intended to limit concentration. Nasdaq says the index is rebalanced quarterly and reconstituted each December. For exact eligibility and weighting rules, consult the current Nasdaq-100 methodology; a general explainer is not a substitute for the full rulebook.
Is US Tech 100 the same as Nasdaq-100?
Not necessarily. “US Tech 100” is used by some providers for an instrument linked to Nasdaq-100 futures or another derivative. For example, a CFTC-filed Nadex rulebook uses the name for contracts based on E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures and says those contracts are not sponsored, endorsed, sold, or promoted by CME or Nasdaq. That historical filing illustrates the naming ambiguity; it does not establish that the contracts are currently offered or describe their current terms.
Before comparing prices, check the instrument identifier and what it represents. NDX is the cash index. NQ is the CME E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures contract. A broker’s “US Tech 100” may be a separate contract with its own provider-specific terms. The index itself is not directly investable; an index-linked fund, futures contract, or other product is a distinct instrument with its own risks.

How can I check the Nasdaq-100 live?
Nasdaq’s Global Index Data Service (GIDS) describes real-time updates for indexes and ETFs, as well as end-of-day summary messages. Nasdaq lists official end-of-day fields including open, high, low, close, and net change. This establishes that real-time index data is distributed through GIDS; it does not mean every public webpage or broker screen carries an un-delayed feed. Nasdaq’s GIDS page describes the service.
For a useful live-performance check, record these details alongside the number:
- Instrument: NDX cash index, NQ futures, or a provider-specific contract.
- Timestamp and time zone: A price without a time reference may not reflect the current session.
- Source and delay status: Look for the provider’s disclosure about real-time or delayed data.
- Session: Identify whether the reading is from regular cash-market hours or a futures session outside those hours.
- Measure: Distinguish an intraday point or percentage change from a close-to-close return.
No timestamped current quote is established here, so this guide does not state a current NDX level or say whether it is up or down today.

Why can a US Tech 100 quote differ from NDX?
Cash index and futures are different instruments
CME’s E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures (NQ) provide exposure to the Nasdaq-100 through a tradable futures contract; they are not the cash index. CME specifies that each contract is $20 multiplied by the index and has a minimum tick of 0.25 index points. CME labels the active-contract data displayed on its overview page as delayed. See the CME E-mini Nasdaq-100 overview.
Futures can trade outside the cash equity session, so their prices can move when the cash index is not updating in the same way. They may also differ from the cash index because a futures contract is a separate traded instrument. If using futures as an overnight or outside-session proxy, label the quote as futures and include its contract month, timestamp, and delay status rather than presenting it as an NDX reading.
Provider labels and data feeds matter
Even when two screens appear to track the same broad market, one may show the cash index while another shows a futures-linked or broker-specific contract. Different feed timing or delay disclosures can also make displayed values differ. The label alone is not enough to establish instrument, session, or freshness.

What explains a move in the index?
Because NDX is modified market-cap weighted, movements in larger constituents generally have more influence than equal-sized moves in smaller constituents. Its broad association with technology and growth does not make it a pure technology-sector measure: non-financial companies in other sectors are included too. A daily move therefore describes the index’s weighted basket, not the performance of every constituent or of technology stocks alone.

To explain a specific day’s move responsibly, a report needs a timestamped quote and relevant market evidence for that session. Without those, a current directional claim or attribution would be unsupported. Also distinguish the index’s intraday change from its close-to-close return; they answer different questions.

The Nasdaq-100 is a focused index of 100 large Nasdaq-listed non-financial companies. Nasdaq describes the Nasdaq Composite as covering more than 3,000 Nasdaq-listed securities, while the S&P 500 has a broader-market role. These indexes differ in constituent count and eligibility, financial-sector inclusion, exchange-listing requirements, sector concentration, and weighting methodology; they should not be treated as interchangeable measures of the market. Nasdaq’s index explainer discusses these distinctions.

What recent methodology and scale figures mean
Nasdaq announced on March 30, 2026 that approved Nasdaq-100 methodology updates took effect May 1, 2026. The announcement confirms the effective date but is not, by itself, a detailed account of every changed eligibility or weighting rule; use the current methodology document for those specifics. The same announcement reported more than 200 investment products tracking the index and over $600 billion in assets under management globally. Those are figures reported by Nasdaq as of March 30, 2026, not current October 2026 totals. Nasdaq’s announcement provides the dated context.
Separately, Nasdaq reported more than $1.7 trillion in global exposure linked to the Nasdaq-100 as of June 30, 2026. That is an as-of-date scale statistic, not an index return or a current quote. Nasdaq’s explainer gives the figure.
