A U.S. stock-market update is only useful when you know which session it covers, when the quote was observed and whether the data is delayed. A page labeled “live” is not automatically a real-time, consolidated view of every U.S. trading venue. Check its timestamp, named data source, delay notice and session label before interpreting a price move.
Is the U.S. stock market open right now?
For stocks traded on exchanges and certain other markets, regular trading hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, according to Investor.gov. That is the standard regular session, not a guarantee that every security trades continuously or that every quote page updates in real time. Holidays and early closes change the schedule; consult the NYSE holiday and trading-hours calendar for its published schedule, which lists times in Eastern Time.
Premarket and postmarket sessions
Nasdaq describes its current premarket session as 4:00–9:30 a.m. ET and its postmarket session as 4:00–8:00 p.m. ET. These are Nasdaq’s session descriptions; extended-hours access and hours can differ by exchange and brokerage. A broker may also limit which securities or order types customers can use outside regular hours.
What does “live” mean on a stock-market page?
“Live” is a claim about a particular data source, not a universal property of market information. NYSE describes its proprietary feeds as real-time products covering quote and trade information, order-book activity and auction imbalances across its markets. Separately, NYSE’s public market-data page displays a notice that its data is delayed by at least 15 minutes. A public page and a real-time proprietary feed are therefore not the same product.

Before relying on a quote or index display, look for the provider and the data terms: whether quotes are real-time or delayed, which securities and venues are included, whether the display covers regular trading or extended hours, and whether it is consolidated or venue-specific. NYSE’s descriptions of its own feeds are product information, not an independent comparison of market-data vendors.
What a useful update should show
- Timestamp: when the displayed quote or update was observed, including the time zone.
- Session: regular hours, premarket, postmarket or another explicitly named session.
- Data source and delay: the named provider and whether the feed is real-time or delayed.
- Coverage: the securities and venues represented, and whether prices are consolidated or specific to one venue.
Without those details, a displayed number may be stale, limited to one venue or drawn from a different session than the one a reader assumes.

How do extended-hours quotes differ from regular-session quotes?
Extended-hours trading can produce genuine trades and quotes, but the market may be thinner and less consistent than during regular hours. The SEC’s June 6, 2022 investor bulletin says market-maker participation may be limited or absent; prices can differ among trading systems; lower trading interest can lead to wider bid–ask spreads or no quotes; and consolidated quote and trade data available during regular hours may not be readily available. The bulletin also notes that venue and brokerage rules and accepted order types vary.
As a result, an after-hours price on one screen is not necessarily a price available across the market or one at which a particular investor could trade. A sharp move can reflect activity in a small number of securities or on a particular system. Read the quote with its timestamp, session and venue context, and do not treat a missing quote as proof that no trading is occurring elsewhere.

Are overnight U.S. stock-market hours available everywhere?
No. Proposed or planned longer hours are not the same as broadly available trading. Session availability depends on the exchange, approvals, operational readiness and brokerage access.

Nasdaq’s global trading hours FAQ describes a proposed overnight session from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, with an 8:00–9:00 p.m. maintenance pause. Nasdaq says implementation depends on SEC approval and readiness of the securities information processors (SIPs). The proposal does not establish that all exchanges or brokers offer overnight trading. Nasdaq also describes its current premarket, regular and postmarket sessions in the FAQ; check the Nasdaq global trading hours FAQ for its latest status.
How much trading happens outside regular hours?
At a September 17, 2026 roundtable, SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce said extended-hours trading was concentrated in a handful of stocks and accounted for “less than 1% of total trading for NMS stocks.” That is her dated statement and stated scope, not an undated estimate for every security or a separate statistical series. Peirce also characterized the emerging pattern as “a 23-hour, five-day trading week.” Neither statement means that every stock trades through every hour or that trading is equally active across sessions.

How to interpret a market update before acting
- Identify the session. Compare the update time with regular hours of 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET and check whether it is labeled premarket, postmarket or overnight.
- Check the timestamp and delay. A page may display delayed data even while the market is open; use the provider’s stated delay rather than assuming “live” means real time.
- Find the source and coverage. Determine whether the information comes from an exchange feed, a public display or another named provider, and whether it is venue-specific or consolidated.
- Assess the quote, not just the last price. In extended hours, compare available bid and ask prices and note if the spread is wide or quotes are absent. A last trade alone does not show what price is currently available.
- Confirm access and order rules with your brokerage. Extended-hours sessions, eligible securities and order types vary. The SEC’s June 6, 2022 investor bulletin explains the risks; it is not a current schedule for any particular broker or venue.
