The September 2026 ISM Services Prices Index rose to 74.0, its highest reading since July 2022. That signals widespread reports of higher input prices among surveyed service businesses—not a 74% increase in prices or a direct measure of consumer inflation. The reading adds to the reasons the Federal Reserve may be cautious about rate relief, but it does not determine the Fed’s next move or establish that Bitcoin reacted to the report.
What the September ISM services report says
The Institute for Supply Management’s September 2026 Services report showed prices rising across respondents while several activity measures cooled. The indexes are diffusion readings: they show the direction and breadth of reported change, not the size of price moves.
| Index | September 2026 | August 2026 | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Services PMI | 54.9 | 55.4 | Expansion continued, at a slightly slower pace. |
| Business Activity | 56.5 | 61.7 | Expansion continued, but activity eased. |
| New Orders | 59.8 | 60.9 | Expansion continued, slightly slower. |
| Employment | 50.1 | 47.8 | Returned to slight expansion after two months below 50. |
| Prices | 74.0 | 72.6 | Broad input-price increases were reported; the reading was the highest since July 2022. |
| Supplier Deliveries | 53.2 | 51.3 | Above 50 indicates slower deliveries for this index, which is interpreted inversely. |
The Prices Index was above 70 for the sixth time in seven months and above 60 for 22 consecutive months. ISM reported that prices paid had increased for the 112th consecutive month; 17 industries reported increases and none reported decreases. The report also said fuel prices had risen for an eighth consecutive month and cited tariffs and fuel costs as the most frequently mentioned supply-chain issues. Those details suggest possible sources of pressure, but do not establish that either category alone drove the overall reading. Read ISM’s September 2026 Services report.
Why 74.0 is not an inflation rate
ISM’s Prices Index measures the direction and breadth of services organizations reporting higher or lower prices for materials and services. It does not tell readers how much prices rose, and it is not a consumer-price index. It should not be compared directly with CPI or PCE inflation rates.

For the Services PMI, ISM says readings above 48.1 over time generally indicate overall economic expansion. The 50 threshold is relevant to the direction of the individual indexes, with supplier deliveries interpreted in reverse. In September, the headline PMI, business activity and new orders remained on the expansion side, while the Prices reading indicated broad reports of higher input costs.
Does the report mean the Fed will delay rate cuts?
No single survey reading dictates the Federal Reserve’s policy. A sustained run of input-cost pressure can complicate the case for easing if policymakers conclude that inflation risks remain elevated, but the ISM report alone cannot show what the Fed will decide or when.

On October 1, before the ISM release on October 5, Fed Vice Chair Philip N. Jefferson said inflation remained above the Fed’s 2% target and that he saw upside inflation risks. He cited the September decision to raise the federal funds target range by 0.25 percentage point to 3.75–4.00%. Jefferson said future adjustments should be based on data trends, the evolving outlook and the balance of risks. His speech also cited 3.4% PCE inflation over the 12 months through August. These were Jefferson’s views, which the speech said were not necessarily shared by other Board members or the FOMC; they were not a response to the later ISM report. Read Jefferson’s October 1 speech.
That makes the services price reading relevant context, not a policy signal with a guaranteed outcome. It adds evidence of input-cost pressure to the inflation picture, while the softer—but still expanding—activity measures complicate any simple reading of economic momentum.

How the rate outlook could affect Bitcoin
The connection is conditional rather than proven. If persistent inflation pressure leads investors to expect rate relief later or to become more cautious about risk, financing-sensitive positions may face pressure. That is a possible transmission channel, not evidence that the September ISM report caused a Bitcoin price move. The sources reviewed do not establish a measured Bitcoin response or a change in market-implied rates caused by this release.
Spot exposure and leveraged futures are different risks
A person holding spot Bitcoin is exposed to Bitcoin’s price changes. Futures traders using margin add leverage: it magnifies gains and losses, and an adverse move can require more margin or lead to a position being closed. The CFTC warns that virtual-currency futures losses and profits are amplified in margined contracts. This is general risk guidance, not a forecast about Bitcoin’s direction. What to watch next
- Whether input-price pressure persists: One monthly reading is less informative than a continuing pattern in prices-paid reports and inflation data.
- Whether activity keeps expanding: September’s Services PMI, business activity and new orders remained above their respective expansion thresholds, although several eased from August.
- What policymakers say and do: The Fed’s data-dependent approach means the broader outlook and balance of risks matter alongside any one survey.
- How much risk an investment uses: Leverage can turn an adverse price move into a margin call or forced closure, independent of whether a particular macro explanation proves correct.
