What did the UPSC CSE 2024 notification announce?
Union Public Service Commission Examination Notice No. 05/2024-CSP, dated 14 February 2024, set out the Civil Services Examination 2024 schedule, vacancies, eligibility requirements and selection process. It listed approximately 1,056 expected vacancies across 21 services and posts, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and other Group A and Group B services. The 1,056 figure was an estimate, not a guarantee of final appointments or allocations. UPSC stated that the total could change after it received firm vacancy figures from the cadre-controlling authorities. The notice does not establish a final category-wise distribution for all 1,056 posts.

What were the eligibility basics?
The notice set the general age band at 21 to 32 years as of 1 August 2024, with category-based age relaxations and other specified exceptions. How did the Civil Services Examination selection process work?
Preliminary Examination
Prelims consisted of two objective papers, each worth 200 marks and scheduled for two hours. General Studies Paper II had a qualifying minimum of 33%. Candidates had to appear in both papers for evaluation.

Main Examination and Interview
Candidates who qualified at the preliminary stage proceeded to the written Main Examination and then the Interview/Personality Test, as applicable. Final ranking was based on marks in the written Main Examination and the interview.
