Upland announced an $18 million Series A at a $300 million valuation in November 2021, with Animoca Brands leading the round. The financing was intended to help the company expand its blockchain-based virtual-property game, hire faster, build more brand partnerships, and add international locations. Those were plans stated at the time—not confirmation that each expansion happened.

The announcement also named previous investor FinLab EOS VC Fund, managed by C3 Management, and new investors OneTeam Partners, Block.one, Alumni Ventures Blockchain Fund, Global Founders Capital, Com2uS, Crit Ventures, Korea Investment Partners, Michael Ronen, Mike Vorhaus, and Michael Terpin. It also said “and others,” so the names listed are not necessarily exhaustive.
What is Upland?
Upland is a blockchain-based virtual-property game organized around real-world places. In a November 2, 2021 note, the founders described a platform where participants could acquire and trade virtual properties, build, pursue micro-entrepreneurship, and form communities associated with locations. The founders wrote: “At the heart of this metaverse, we wanted every participant to have the ability to own and trade virtual properties while also being able to build, become micro-entrepreneurs, and create virtual location-based communities.” Read the founders’ note

In its 2026 media kit, Upland describes its current platform as using a dedicated appchain and presents properties and structures as part of the experience. Does virtual property mean owning real-world land?
No. A property represented in Upland is a digital asset within the platform’s ecosystem. The company’s descriptions connect virtual properties to real-world locations, but the cited materials do not establish that buying one gives the buyer title to the corresponding physical land, address, or building. “Virtual real estate” here describes an in-game asset, not a deed to physical real estate.

What did Upland say it would do with the funding?
The founders said the financing would help the company scale its team faster, develop more brand partnerships, and grow the metaverse, including by adding international locations. Those statements describe the intended use of proceeds when the round was announced; they do not establish which initiatives were later completed.

The announcement establishes the historical funding terms and the investors Upland chose to name. The founders’ note explains the product vision and stated plans for the money. Upland’s 2026 media kit describes how the company currently positions its platform, but the reviewed materials do not establish current user, revenue, transaction, or token metrics. The $300 million valuation should therefore be read as a term reported for the 2021 financing, not as evidence of present-day scale or financial performance.
