Re:

UPI vs cards, bank transfers and mobile wallets: which payment method should you use?

UPI is usually the easiest choice for routine payments, while NEFT suits batch bank transfers, RTGS suits ₹2 lakh-plus real-time transfers, cards suit accepted merchants and wallets suit eligible stored balances. Compare the limits, fees, risks and recovery steps before you pay.

For most routine, small payments in India, use UPI when both sides support it and you have verified the recipient. Choose NEFT when you are moving money to a bank account and half-hourly batch processing is acceptable. Choose RTGS for transfers of ₹2 lakh or more when real-time settlement matters. Use a debit or credit card for an accepted merchant purchase when its issuer terms suit you. A mobile wallet is appropriate when you want to spend an eligible stored balance, but it is not the same as holding money in a bank account.

The best choice depends on settlement speed, amount, acceptance, fees, limits, records, rewards and the route available if something goes wrong. Those conditions differ by bank, issuer, app, wallet type and transaction category.

Which payment method should you use?

Use this decision rule before opening an app:

Your situation Usually the best fit Why
Paying a person or a small merchant now UPI It is designed for instant, 24/7 account-to-account transfers and merchant payments, provided the banks and apps support the transaction.
Sending money to a bank account when a short wait is acceptable NEFT It is available 24x7x365 but settles in half-hourly batches.
Sending ₹2 lakh or more and needing real-time settlement RTGS It processes transactions individually in real time and has a ₹2 lakh minimum.
Buying from a merchant that accepts cards Debit or credit card The card network and issuer handle authorization; the card’s fees, billing terms, security controls and dispute process then apply.
Spending money already loaded into a payment instrument Mobile wallet or other PPI It uses stored value. Acceptance, KYC status, interoperability and issuer rules determine where and how it works.

No method is universally cheapest or safest in every transaction. Confirm the amount limit and charge shown by your bank, card issuer, UPI app or wallet before you authorize payment.

How the five methods actually work

UPI: an instant account-based rail

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), connects participating bank accounts for person-to-person transfers and merchant payments. Registration through a participating app and a linked bank account are generally required. NPCI also describes linkage involving eligible prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) in its FAQ.

A UPI payment is authorized with a UPI PIN. The PIN is not a password to disclose to a caller or merchant: it authorizes the transaction, so entering it on a request you did not initiate can move money out of your account. NPCI states that a UPI payment cannot be stopped after it has been initiated.

UPI is available around the clock and is often the simplest option for a verified recipient. It does not remove the need to check the payee name, virtual payment address, account details or QR code before entering the PIN.

NEFT: bank transfers in half-hourly batches

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) describes the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) system as available 24x7x365. Unlike UPI’s instant design, NEFT processes transactions in half-hourly batches. That makes it suitable when you know the beneficiary’s bank details and can tolerate settlement that follows the next applicable batch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NEFT has no RBI-set minimum or maximum amount. Your bank can still impose channel, account or risk limits. You normally need the beneficiary’s name, account number and bank branch identifier, such as an IFSC, and must check every field because a transfer instruction is difficult to reverse once processed.

RTGS: individual, real-time settlement for larger transfers

Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) handles transfers individually rather than netting them in batches. RBI says the service is available 24x7x365, has a minimum transfer amount of ₹2 lakh and no RBI-set upper ceiling. A bank or account channel can apply its own controls within those parameters.

RTGS is designed for a high-value transfer where the timing of final settlement matters. It is unnecessary for a ₹500 purchase and cannot be used for an amount below the ₹2 lakh minimum.

Debit and credit cards: merchant payments under issuer rules

A card payment is authorized through the card network and the issuing bank. The merchant must accept that card type, and the issuer’s security checks, available balance or credit limit and transaction settings determine whether it goes through.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cards can offer features such as a credit period, rewards or purchase protections, but none is universal. The applicable annual fee, interest, foreign-use fee, reward earning, billing date, security controls and dispute procedure are all product-specific. Check the current terms for the particular card and transaction instead of assuming that a benefit applies.

Mobile wallets and other prepaid payment instruments

RBI classifies mobile wallets under prepaid payment instruments (PPIs). You load value into the instrument and spend from that balance at supported merchants or services. That stored value is not the same thing as a deposit account.

Interoperability depends on the PPI type and KYC status. RBI’s framework provides interoperability for full-KYC PPIs, with different mechanisms for wallet-to-wallet, wallet-to-bank or wallet-to-card use. A wallet may therefore work at one checkout or with one transfer route but not another. Check the issuer’s acceptance list, KYC status, balance rules, charges and complaint channel.

Limits, timing and charges

The figures below are regulatory or scheme limits, not guarantees that every bank or app will allow the maximum. Banks and issuers can set lower internal limits, and transaction category matters.

UPI Instant design; available 24/7 NPCI’s ordinary FAQ limit is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Bank and app limits can be lower. Not one universal fee; check the bank, app and transaction type.
NEFT 24x7x365; half-hourly batches No RBI-set floor or ceiling; bank channel limits may apply. RBI’s FAQ lists maximum outward charges: ₹2.50 up to ₹10,000; ₹5 above ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh; ₹15 above ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh; and ₹25 above ₹2 lakh, plus applicable GST. A bank may charge less.
RTGS 24x7x365; individual real-time processing Minimum ₹2 lakh; no RBI-set upper ceiling. Inward transactions are free under the RBI FAQ. Outward charges are capped at ₹25 for ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh and ₹50 above ₹5 lakh, exclusive of tax if applicable. Confirm the bank’s current schedule.
Debit or credit card Authorization and settlement follow card-network and issuer rules. Available balance, credit limit, merchant category, risk controls and issuer settings govern approval. Issuer-specific fees, interest, rewards and dispute rules; no universal card benefit is established.
Wallet/PPI Spends from stored value; acceptance and interoperability depend on PPI type and KYC. Issuer and RBI PPI rules apply; limits vary by KYC status and product. Issuer-specific loading, transfer, withdrawal or service charges may apply.

UPI limits changed for selected merchant categories

NPCI circular NPCI/UPI/2025-26/OC/185B, dated August 28, 2025, increased limits for listed verified-merchant categories aligned to tax payments and other specified uses. The circular kept person-to-person limits under existing rules. Acquiring banks may apply internal limits within NPCI ceilings. Before a large payment, verify the category, the merchant’s verified status and the effective rule displayed by your bank or app.

A dated UPI-volume statistic

In a circular dated October 8, 2025, NPCI wrote that “UPI now processes approximately 20 billion transactions each month.” That is an approximate figure stated by NPCI on that date, not a permanent monthly average; use the latest NPCI publication when citing current volume.

Choosing by the job you need to do

Paying a person or small merchant immediately

Start with UPI. Confirm the recipient’s displayed name and the amount, then authorize only after checking that the request is genuine. If the other party’s bank or app does not support the route, use a bank transfer or another accepted method rather than repeatedly retrying an uncertain transaction.

Sending rent, a deposit or another account transfer

Use NEFT when the beneficiary’s account details are known and half-hourly batch processing is acceptable. It has no RBI-set amount floor or ceiling, although your bank may set a lower online limit. Save the transaction reference and the beneficiary details you submitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving ₹2 lakh or more for a time-critical payment

Use RTGS when the amount meets the ₹2 lakh minimum and individual real-time processing is important. Check the beneficiary account and IFSC carefully, confirm your bank’s channel limit and review the displayed charge before submitting.

Buying goods or services from a card-accepting merchant

Use a card when the merchant accepts it and the particular card’s terms improve the transaction for you. Review the final amount, whether the purchase is domestic or international, any surcharge shown at checkout and the issuer’s alert or verification process. Do not select a card solely because you expect a reward, refund or interest-free period; those depend on the issuer and billing terms.

Spending a balance already held in a wallet

A wallet makes sense when the merchant accepts that wallet and you intentionally want to use its stored balance. Check whether your account is full KYC if you need interoperability, transfers or broader acceptance. Keep only an amount appropriate for your expected spending, and understand what happens to an unused balance if the wallet is closed or restricted under its terms.

Step-by-step payment checklists

UPI person-to-person or merchant payment

  1. Open your participating UPI app and choose the transfer or scan-and-pay option.
  2. Enter the verified UPI address, account details or merchant QR route. Check the payee name returned by the system.
  3. Review the amount and any displayed note or charge. Do not approve a request merely because someone sent a collect request or QR image.
  4. Enter your UPI PIN only in the official payment flow you initiated.
  5. Save the confirmation and transaction reference. If the status is pending, do not immediately send a second payment until you know whether the first one completed.

NEFT transfer

  1. Use your bank’s official online or branch channel and select NEFT.
  2. Add or select the beneficiary using the exact name, account number and bank identifier requested by your bank.
  3. Enter the amount, review the applicable outward charge and confirm the account from which the money will leave.
  4. Submit the transfer and record the reference number and displayed batch or status information.
  5. Tell the recipient when the instruction was submitted, while making clear that NEFT uses half-hourly batches rather than instant settlement.

RTGS transfer

  1. Select RTGS in your bank’s transfer menu and confirm that the amount is at least ₹2 lakh.
  2. Verify the beneficiary’s name, account number and bank identifier character by character.
  3. Check the bank’s displayed fee, your channel limit and the final amount before authorization.
  4. Authorize through the bank’s official security step and retain the confirmation reference.
  5. Contact the bank promptly through its official channel if the status does not match the result you expected.

Card purchase

  1. Confirm that the merchant accepts your card network and the transaction currency or domestic/international setting is appropriate.
  2. Check the checkout amount, delivery or cancellation terms and any surcharge shown.
  3. Complete the issuer’s authentication step without disclosing a one-time code or card security value to a person who contacts you.
  4. Keep the receipt and monitor the issuer alert or statement for the posted amount.
  5. For a disputed transaction, use the issuer’s official card-dispute route and retain the reference number.

Wallet payment

  1. Check the wallet balance, KYC status and whether the merchant or transfer destination accepts that PPI.
  2. Open the official wallet app, select the supported payment route and verify the recipient or merchant details.
  3. Authorize in the wallet’s own flow and save the transaction reference.
  4. Review the issuer’s rules for failed payments, balance restoration, charges and complaints rather than assuming bank-transfer protections apply.

Security, failed payments and complaints

UPI PINs and fraudulent requests

Never share your UPI PIN. NPCI treats it as authorization for a transaction. A bank employee, police officer, courier or merchant should not need you to reveal it. A QR code can be used to request money from you; scanning one does not automatically mean you are receiving funds. Read the payment screen and confirm whether you are paying or collecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a UPI payment fails or remains pending

For a declined payment, NPCI’s FAQ describes real-time reversal mechanisms. If the amount does not return, contact your bank through its official channel and raise the complaint in the UPI app where that option is available. Keep the transaction ID, date, amount and screenshots. Do not promise yourself a particular refund time because the applicable scheme and bank process determine the resolution.

Unauthorized electronic transactions

RBI’s unauthorized-transaction directions distinguish bank fault, a third-party breach and customer negligence. Reporting speed affects liability in qualifying cases. If you shared credentials, you can bear the loss until you report it. If you suspect an unauthorized debit, contact the issuer or bank immediately through its official channel, block or secure the affected instrument as directed, and preserve the complaint reference.

Wrong beneficiary details

NEFT and RTGS instructions rely on the details you submit. A successful transfer to the wrong account is not the same as a failed payment. Contact your bank immediately with the transaction reference; recovery may require the receiving bank’s cooperation and is not guaranteed. For UPI, report the transaction in the app and to your bank as soon as you recognize the error.

Limits, downtime or a rejected card

  • If UPI rejects an amount, check the bank’s per-transaction and daily limit, the payment category and whether the merchant is verified.
  • If NEFT or RTGS is unavailable in your channel, confirm the bank’s maintenance notice and use an alternative only after checking whether the original instruction was submitted.
  • If a card is declined, check available balance or credit, domestic/international and online-use settings, merchant acceptance and issuer fraud controls.
  • If a wallet payment fails, check balance, KYC restrictions, acceptance and the issuer’s status page or complaint route.

Trade-offs that matter beyond speed

Consideration UPI NEFT/RTGS Cards Wallets
Source of funds Linked bank account or eligible linked PPI Bank account Bank account for debit cards; issuer credit for credit cards Preloaded stored value
Best evidence to retain UPI transaction ID and app status Bank reference, beneficiary details and status Receipt, authorization alert and statement entry Wallet transaction ID and balance record
Most important verification Payee name, amount and PIN screen Account number, beneficiary name and bank identifier Merchant, amount, currency and issuer alert Acceptance, KYC status and balance
Typical failure concern Wrong payee, pending status or limit Wrong account details or batch timing Decline, fraud alert, fee or billing dispute Restricted balance, limited acceptance or issuer complaint process

A practical selection routine

  1. Identify the recipient: person, merchant, bank account or wallet account.
  2. Set the urgency: immediate, same-day batch processing or real-time high-value settlement.
  3. Check the amount: compare it with UPI, RTGS and your provider’s own limits.
  4. Confirm acceptance: the recipient’s bank, merchant terminal, app or wallet must support the route.
  5. Price the transaction: review the charge, tax, card interest or issuer fee displayed before authorization.
  6. Choose the recovery path: know which app, bank or card issuer will take a complaint if the payment fails.
  7. Authorize safely: use only the official app or bank channel and never disclose a PIN, password or one-time code.

For a routine ₹500 purchase, that sequence will usually lead to UPI or a card accepted by the merchant. For a ₹3 lakh account transfer, it will usually lead to RTGS when real-time settlement is required, or NEFT when batch processing is acceptable. A wallet is the deliberate choice when the stored balance and its acceptance rules are the reason to use it.
