If a UPI payment shows failed but your bank account was debited, check the transaction record and bank entry before paying again. NPCI says a failed debit should be refunded; if the refund has not arrived within one hour, contact your bank. If the status is pending, the payment may still be processing. For an added fee, compare the itemised amount with the payee and total shown on the UPI authorization screen before entering your PIN.
Start with the transaction record
Open the UPI app you used and find the exact payment in transaction history. Note its status, payee or merchant, amount, date, and reference number. Then check the linked bank account for a debit, reversal, or later credit, and review any bank notification. The app status and bank entry together are more useful than a merchant’s verbal assurance alone.

Keep the details for this transaction together: the app record, bank entry, merchant receipt or checkout screen, and any support complaint reference. If the merchant says a payment did not arrive, ask them to check their own payment record or confirmation and compare that with the transaction details in your app. Do not rely on a screenshot or message in isolation when the app or bank status has changed since it was sent.
Do not switch apps or initiate another payment simply because the first screen looked uncertain. An already initiated transaction is tied to the bank and payment records; using a different UPI app does not reverse it. Confirm what happened to the original transaction first.

Compare the signals, not just one message
When the status is unclear, compare four things before deciding what to do next: what the UPI app currently says, whether your account shows a debit or reversal, whether the merchant has confirmation of credit, and what your bank can see now. Also note how much time has elapsed. These signals can differ while a payment is being resolved, so a single notification or a merchant’s first response may not answer whether the transaction is complete.
- App status: Is the transaction specifically marked failed, pending, or another status? Record the current wording and reference number.
- Bank entry: Is there a debit, a reversal or refund, or no visible entry? Check for a later credit as well as the original debit.
- Merchant confirmation: Has the merchant checked whether the payment was received, rather than only whether a notification appeared at checkout?
- Latest update: Has the status or bank entry changed since you first checked? If not, ask your bank for transaction-specific guidance.
This comparison helps distinguish a confirmed failure from a transfer that is still being processed. It is also a safer basis for deciding whether to contact support than trying another app or making a second payment while the first one is unresolved.
If the app says the payment failed
When the app marks a transaction failed but the bank account was debited, NPCI’s UPI FAQ says the money will be refunded. NPCI advises contacting the bank’s customer support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. That is the FAQ’s guidance for failed debits, not a reason to assume a second payment is safe before checking the transaction record.

- Match the transaction’s amount, payee, date, and reference number to the bank account debit.
- Look for a reversal or refund entry in the account and check bank notifications.
- If the refund is absent after one hour, contact the bank that holds the debited account. Give it the transaction reference and ask for transaction-specific status.
- Use the transaction’s complaint or help option in the UPI app if available, and retain the complaint reference.
If the transaction is marked failed and there is no debit in the linked account, still check the app’s current record and any bank notification before taking further action. If a debit appears later or the app and account do not match, give the bank the reference number and ask it to check the specific transaction. The central practical point is to verify the original payment before attempting another one.
NPCI’s FAQ says, “In case of failures money will be refunded back to your account,” and adds, “If you do not receive the refund within 1 hour, please contact customer support at your bank.” These are NPCI’s organization-level statements; the FAQ does not name an individual speaker or publication date. If the transaction is pending
Pending is not the same as failed. NPCI explains that a pending transaction may be delayed at the beneficiary bank and describes a case in which credit can take up to 48 hours. That timing is the FAQ’s guidance for the described pending scenario, not a guarantee that every transaction will settle within that period.
- Check the current status in the app and the linked account rather than relying on an earlier notification.
- Ask the merchant whether it received the payment or confirmation, and compare its answer with the transaction details.
- Contact your bank for transaction-specific guidance if the status remains pending or the timing is unclear. Give the bank the reference number and ask what it can see about the transfer.
- Avoid paying again until you have established whether the first transaction was credited, reversed, or remains unresolved.
If the pending status continues, do not treat the 48-hour figure as proof that a particular payment must have settled. It is the timing NPCI describes for a pending transaction in the FAQ. Keep checking the current transaction record and ask your bank what applies to your case, especially if the app status, bank account, and merchant’s information do not agree.

NPCI’s FAQ includes the question, “My transaction is showing ‘Pending’. The amount has been debited and not credited. Is there a problem?” Its answer describes possible beneficiary-bank delay and a 48-hour window. Check the current app and bank instructions as well as that FAQ.
How to raise a complaint
For a transaction-status or refund problem, start with the help or complaint function attached to the transaction in the UPI app, or contact the bank holding the debited account. Provide the reference number, date, amount, payee, and status; keep screenshots and the complaint reference so you can follow up consistently.
Explain precisely what you need checked: for example, that the app shows failed while the bank account shows a debit, or that the app remains pending and the merchant says it has not received the payment. Include whether you can see a reversal or refund and when you last checked. This gives the bank or app support the transaction-specific facts rather than a general report that “UPI is not working.”

NPCI also operates a complaint portal that can route a complaint to the relevant member bank or institution. Use the transaction details and retain the portal reference. The portal is a routing channel, not a substitute for giving your bank the details of a debit from your account. See NPCI’s UPI dispute redressal mechanism.

If a merchant added a fee
Before authorizing a payment, compare the merchant’s displayed price and any separately itemised charge with the payee and total shown on the UPI authorization screen. If the figures differ, pause and ask the merchant what the fee covers. Keep the bill, checkout screen, or other record showing the base price and fee, along with the payment receipt.
Compare the amounts at each point in the purchase: the merchant’s displayed base price, the separately itemised fee and its stated purpose, the total in the UPI authorization screen, and the final receipt. If the authorization screen shows a different payee or amount from what you expected, do not enter your PIN until the merchant has explained or corrected it. A fee appearing under a separate label should be documented as shown; the label alone does not establish what rules apply.
RBI’s report says Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) is not collected for UPI transactions under the government direction effective January 1, 2020. MDR is a merchant-side payment acceptance charge; that narrow point does not, by itself, establish whether every separately described customer-facing convenience, service, or other fee is allowed in every situation. The reviewed official sources do not settle the legality of all differently labelled fees or the terms of a particular merchant’s sale. Ask for an itemised explanation, check the applicable terms, and use the relevant consumer or regulatory channel if the explanation does not resolve the issue. The RBI report is available at RBI Annual Reports.

In other words, do not assume that a charge is lawful or unlawful just because it is called a “convenience fee,” “service fee,” or “processing fee.” The official evidence here establishes the narrow MDR point, not a universal rule for every customer-facing charge. Preserve the displayed price, itemised charge, authorization amount, and receipt so the issue can be explained or reviewed against the relevant terms.
Check the amount before entering your PIN
- Confirm the payee or merchant name displayed in the authorization screen.
- Compare the total there with the price and itemised fee the merchant showed.
- If the payee or amount is unexpected, do not enter your UPI PIN; ask the merchant to correct or explain the charge first.
- Never share your UPI PIN with a merchant, caller, or anyone claiming to help resolve a payment.
What to have ready when contacting support
- The transaction reference number and the date and amount.
- The status shown in the UPI app and the merchant or payee name.
- Whether the linked bank account shows a debit, refund, or neither.
- Any merchant receipt, itemised fee, or screenshot relevant to the dispute.
- The complaint reference from the app, bank, or NPCI portal, if one has already been issued.
Be consistent about which transaction you are discussing if you have more than one payment attempt. Share the matching reference number and amount, and say whether the merchant confirmation relates to that same payment. For a fee query, distinguish the advertised price from the separate charge and the total you were asked to authorize; for a failed or pending transaction, distinguish the app status from what your bank account shows.
NPCI’s circular index lists operating-rule circulars, including entries for FY 2026–27. Because app and bank handling can change, check the live instructions in your UPI app and your bank’s current process when raising a case. The index is at NPCI UPI circulars.

My UPI transaction failed, but my bank account was debited. What should I do?
Check the exact transaction status, reference number, and matching bank debit, then look for a reversal or refund. NPCI says failed debits should be refunded and advises contacting your bank if the refund has not arrived within one hour. Do not pay again until you have checked the original transaction.
My UPI payment is pending and the amount was debited. Has the merchant been paid?
A pending status is not the same as a confirmed failure or a confirmed merchant credit. NPCI says a pending transaction may be delayed at the beneficiary bank and describes a case where credit may take up to 48 hours. Check the current app and bank status, ask the merchant to verify receipt, and contact your bank for transaction-specific guidance.

The merchant says my UPI payment was not received. Should I pay again?
First compare the transaction status and reference in your UPI app with the debit, reversal, or refund in your linked bank account. Ask the merchant to check its payment record for that transaction. Avoid another payment while the first is unresolved; contact your bank or use the app’s transaction help option if the records do not clarify what happened.
Can a merchant add a convenience or service fee to a UPI payment?
RBI’s report says MDR is not collected for UPI transactions under the government direction effective January 1, 2020. That does not determine whether every separately described customer-facing convenience, service, or other fee is permitted. Ask for an itemised explanation, compare it with the checkout and authorization amounts, and check the applicable terms or a relevant consumer or regulatory channel.
What information should I provide when I complain about a UPI transaction?
Provide the transaction reference number, date, amount, payee or merchant, current app status, and whether your bank account shows a debit, reversal, or refund. Include relevant screenshots or a receipt and keep the complaint reference. You can use the transaction’s help or complaint function, contact the bank holding the debited account, or use NPCI’s complaint portal for routing to a member institution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I share my UPI PIN with the merchant or bank support?
No. Never share your UPI PIN with a merchant, caller, or anyone claiming to help. Check the payee and amount on the authorization screen yourself, and do not enter the PIN if either is unexpected.
Will switching to another UPI app reverse a failed or pending payment?
No. Switching apps does not reverse an already initiated bank transaction. Check the original transaction’s status and bank entry, and contact the bank or app support with its reference number if it remains unresolved.
Who should I contact about a fraudulent or unauthorized UPI payment?
Report a genuinely fraudulent or unauthorized transaction to your bank promptly. For an ordinary status, refund, or merchant fee dispute, use the transaction help function or contact the bank with the transaction-specific details.
The Bottom Line
For a failed or pending UPI payment, match the app status to the bank entry and merchant confirmation before trying again. NPCI says a failed debit should be refunded and advises contacting the bank if it has not arrived within one hour; a pending transaction may involve beneficiary-bank delay, with up to 48 hours described in the FAQ. For an added merchant fee, compare the itemised charge, authorization amount, and receipt, ask what the charge covers, and never share your UPI PIN. RBI’s MDR statement does not decide every differently described fee.
