Regular UPI authorizes payments from a linked bank account and is the better fit for larger payments or when Lite is unavailable. App, bank, and transaction-category rules can narrow the limits in either flow.
How UPI Lite and regular UPI differ
| Feature | UPI Lite | Regular UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Where payment funds come from | A separately loaded balance associated with the UPI app and funded from a linked bank account. It is not a separate bank account. NPCI’s UPI Lite booklet | The payment is authorized against a linked bank account through the UPI app. NPCI’s UPI FAQ |
| Transaction limit | RBI’s ceiling is ₹1,000 per transaction. An app or payment flow may allow less. RBI circular, December 4, 2024 | NPCI lists up to ₹1 lakh per transaction for normal UPI, with exceptions for some categories. Bank and app rules can also affect the limit. NPCI’s UPI FAQ |
| Balance limit | ₹5,000 total at any point under the RBI framework. RBI circular, December 4, 2024 | No separate UPI Lite-style stored balance is involved in the standard linked-account payment flow. |
| Setup | Opt in through a supported app, select a linked account, and add funds. Menus and availability vary by app and bank. NPCI’s UPI Lite booklet | Register with a UPI app, link a participating bank account, and set or use a UPI PIN through the supported flow. NPCI’s UPI FAQ |
| Internet connection | NPCI describes Lite debit as offline-capable, but loading funds and processing credits such as refunds require online processing. Support depends on the app and payment route. NPCI’s UPI Lite booklet | Regular linked-bank-account UPI is an online payment flow; it should not be treated as an offline substitute. NPCI’s UPI FAQ |
What the limits mean in practice
RBI’s December 4, 2024 circular says the enhanced UPI Lite limits are ₹1,000 per transaction and ₹5,000 total, effective immediately. These are regulatory ceilings, not a guarantee that every app or payment flow supports every transaction at those maximums. Read the RBI circular.

For regular UPI, NPCI’s FAQ gives ₹1 lakh per transaction as the general limit for normal UPI, while noting exceptions for specific payment categories. Your bank, app, transaction type, and applicable rules may mean your usable limit is different. Check the limit shown by your bank or UPI app for the payment you intend to make rather than assuming the general figure applies universally. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ.

App-specific limits can be lower
For example, Google Pay’s guidance lists a ₹5,000 UPI Lite balance cap and up to ₹1,000 per transaction, but says some payment flows are available only up to ₹500. That describes Google Pay’s implementation, not a separate nationwide Lite rule. Google Pay UPI Lite guidance.

Set up UPI Lite

- Load the balance. The app’s available amount and payment routes may be subject to narrower limits than the RBI ceilings.
NPCI describes Lite as an opt-in feature tied to a linked UPI account. The exact screens and supported features depend on the app and bank. NPCI’s UPI Lite booklet.
Set up regular UPI
- Register in a PSP or UPI app and link an account at a participating bank.
- Use the mobile number verified in the app that matches the number linked to your bank account; NPCI says this match is required for account discovery.
- Set or use your UPI PIN through the app’s supported setup flow. Enter it only in the authorized payment flow and never share it with another person.
NPCI explains account registration and PIN use in its UPI FAQ. The PIN authorizes bank transactions, so keep it private.

When to use UPI Lite or regular UPI
Choose UPI Lite for supported small payments
- You make frequent, low-value payments and want to pay from a separately loaded balance.
- The amount is within both the RBI ceiling and the lower limit, if any, set by your app or payment route.
- Your app, account, and merchant flow support Lite for that payment.
Lite requires funds to be loaded first, so it is useful when the feature’s supported payment flow suits your routine—not as a universal replacement for linked-account UPI.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose regular UPI for larger or unsupported payments
- The payment is above UPI Lite’s per-transaction ceiling.
- You want the payment authorized directly from your linked bank account rather than from a pre-funded Lite balance.
- UPI Lite is not available for your app, account, or merchant payment route.
For a larger regular UPI payment, verify the bank or app limit and any category-specific rule that applies.

Can UPI Lite work without internet?
NPCI describes UPI Lite debit as offline-capable, which can allow supported payments without the usual online authorization flow. That does not make the entire Lite service offline: loading the balance and processing credits such as refunds require online processing, and the app and payment route must support the relevant transaction. NPCI says the UPI PIN is used to authorize bank transactions and warns users not to disclose it. Follow the app’s official setup and payment flows, and keep the PIN private. The official materials cited here do not establish that UPI Lite is categorically safer than regular UPI, so the choice should be based on payment size, funding preference, and availability rather than an assumed security ranking.
