For most buyers, the Google Pixel 8a was the best all-around affordable phone of 2024. It paired excellent computational photography with a 120Hz OLED display, wireless charging, and Google’s unusually long seven-year software-support commitment. The Samsung Galaxy A35 5G was the better value when discounted, while the Motorola Moto G 5G (2024) was the sensible choice below $200.
This is a 2024-focused buying guide, not a claim that these are the newest phones in 2026. Many may now be discontinued, replaced, refurbished, or available only through third-party sellers. Treat the prices below as historical 2024 launch or street-price references, and verify the exact U.S. model, warranty, carrier compatibility, and current support status before buying.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8a | $499 launch price | Most buyers and photography | Camera processing and long support | Slow charging and average heavy-use battery life | Seven years of OS and security updates, according to Google |
| Samsung Galaxy A35 5G | $399.99 launch price; roughly $299 in a late-2024 listing | Large-screen value | AMOLED display, battery, microSD | Less powerful and less consistent camera than the Pixel | Four years of software updates and five years of security support, according to comparison coverage |

Launch prices and sale prices are not interchangeable. Google announced the Pixel 8a at $499, and Samsung announced the Galaxy A35 5G at $399.99. The lower figures reported for several models in late 2024 were sale or listing prices, not permanent manufacturer suggested retail prices. See Google’s Pixel 8a announcement, Samsung’s U.S. A35 announcement, and Phandroid’s late-2024 roundup.

The Pixel 8a was the easiest recommendation for a buyer who wanted one phone that did most things well. Its $499 launch price bought Google’s Tensor G3 processor, a 120Hz OLED display, wireless charging, and a 64-megapixel main camera paired with a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera.
#1 Best Overall
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Its biggest advantage was not the megapixel count. Google’s image processing generally made the Pixel 8a the strongest choice for computational photography, particularly for HDR, skin tones, night photography, and difficult lighting. Comparative coverage also placed it ahead of the Galaxy A35 overall, despite the Samsung’s lower price when discounted. The Pixel has no telephoto camera, however, so it is not a substitute for a premium phone with optical zoom.
Google stated that the Pixel 8a would receive Android OS and security updates for seven years. That commitment matters financially: a phone that remains supported longer can delay another purchase and reduce the risk of using an unpatched device.
The compromises are charging and endurance. Wired charging is rated at 18W and wireless charging at 7.5W. Independent testing found that it could last a normal day for average users, but heavy gaming, navigation, high brightness, or weak cellular coverage could require a top-up. WIRED’s budget-phone coverage provides additional context.

Choose it if: camera quality, long support, compact size, wireless charging, and a clean Google Android experience matter more than maximum battery capacity or charging speed.
Best value when discounted: Samsung Galaxy A35 5G
The Galaxy A35 5G made more sense when its street price fell substantially below its $399.99 U.S. launch price. At that point, it offered a particularly strong mix of a large 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display, a 5,000mAh battery, 5G, microSD expansion, and Samsung’s familiar One UI ecosystem.
The A35 is the better fit for someone who wants a large, bright OLED screen and expandable storage. It is also a natural choice for people already using Samsung apps, Galaxy accessories, or other Galaxy devices.

- Unlocked: Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other major carriers.
- Super-bright 6.7" display + Bass Boost: Take your entertainment to the next level with a fast-refreshing 120Hz display* and stereo sound with more powerful bass****.
- 50MP** Quad Pixel camera system: Capture sharper photos day or night with 4x the light sensitivity—and share beautiful selfies with a 16MP front camera.
- Superfast 5G performance*****: Unleash your entertainment at 5G speed with the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset and up to 12GB of RAM with RAM Boost.******
- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging***: Work and play all day with a 5000mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.
It loses to the Pixel 8a in camera consistency, processing performance, wireless charging, and update longevity. Its 25W wired charging is also modest compared with the Nothing Phone 2a or OnePlus 12R. Samsung’s stated support position was still meaningful—four years of software updates and five years of security support—but it did not match Google’s Pixel commitment.
Buy it over the Pixel 8a when: it is materially cheaper, you prefer a larger screen, microSD is important, or the Samsung ecosystem outweighs the Pixel’s camera and support advantages.
Best performance under roughly $300: Nothing Phone 2a
The Nothing Phone 2a stood out for buyers who valued smooth everyday performance and design. It used a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro processor, a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, dual 50-megapixel rear cameras, a 5,000mAh battery, and 45W wired charging.
Its clean Nothing OS interface and distinctive design gave it more character than many conventional budget phones. It was a compelling choice in the $300 range for scrolling, multitasking, and general responsiveness.
The important U.S. qualification is availability. The Phone 2a was not as straightforward to buy and support in the United States as Pixel, Samsung, or Motorola models. Before importing or purchasing one, check the precise U.S. network bands, Verizon certification, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, eSIM support, warranty region, and return policy. A good global specification sheet does not guarantee a trouble-free U.S. ownership experience.

The CMF Phone 1 offered unusually ambitious hardware for roughly the $200 class. Its MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, 120Hz AMOLED display, microSD expansion, and removable back-cover design made it attractive to buyers who prioritized hardware over long ownership.

- Blazing-fast Qualcomm performance. Get the speed you need for great entertainment with a Snapdragon 680 processor and 4GB**** of RAM.
- Fluid display + immersive stereo sound. Bring your entertainment to life with an ultrawide 6.5" 90Hz* HD+ display plus stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, and Hi-Res Audio**.
- 50MP*** Quad Pixel camera. Capture sharper, more vibrant photos day or night with 4x the light sensitivity.
- 64GB**** built-in storage. Get plenty of room for photos, movies, songs, and apps—and add up to 1TB more with a microSD card*****.
- Unbelievable battery life. Work and play nonstop with a long-lasting 5000mAh battery.*****
Testing reported performance ahead of the Galaxy A25 5G in several benchmark categories. But the CMF Phone 1’s software policy was its defining weakness: Nothing committed to two Android OS updates and three years of security updates. It also shipped without a charger, adding a potential accessory cost.
This is a good choice for a technically confident buyer who wants maximum performance, expandable storage, and a distinctive design. It is a poor choice for someone who expects seven years of updates, simple U.S. carrier activation, local repairs, or a long-lasting primary camera phone.
Best stylus phone: Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2024)
The Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) was the clearest budget choice for handwriting, annotations, quick notes, and casual sketches. It included an integrated stylus, a 6.7-inch OLED display, a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, a 5,000mAh battery, 33W charging, and wireless charging.
The stylus is useful only if it changes how you work. If you rarely write on your phone, the feature may not justify choosing a slower-supported Motorola over a Pixel or Samsung. Camera processing and long-term software support were also weaker than the Pixel 8a’s.
Choose it if: the built-in pen is a daily tool and you want a large OLED display without paying flagship prices.
Best phone under $200: Motorola Moto G 5G (2024)
For a strict budget, the Moto G 5G (2024) was a sensible essentials phone at roughly $199. It offered 5G, NFC, a large screen, and a 5,000mAh battery—enough for calls, messaging, streaming, navigation, social media, and light photography.

- GSM Unlocked: Enjoy seamless connectivity with your preferred GSM carrier. Compatible with T-Mobile, Metro PCS, AT&T, Cricket, Mint Mobile and other GSM networks. SIM card not included. For network compatibility, please check with your carrier. Note: Not compatible with CDMA networks like Verizon (Visible, Spectrum Mobile, US Mobile, Total Wireless, Straight Talk Wireless)
- Boundless Views: Enjoy immersive viewing on the spacious 6.5” HD+ display. Whether you're watching videos, browsing, or gaming, every detail comes through with stunning clarity.
- Smooth Performance, All Day: Powered by an efficient octa-core processor, the G35 ensures smooth performance for your everyday tasks. Enjoy faster app launches, seamless multitasking, and reliable speed.
- Snap, Share, Repeat: The G35 features a dual rear camera setup for sharp, detailed shots, and a front-facing camera that’s perfect for selfies and video calls. Capture every moment with ease and clarity.
- Effortless Access: Keep your phone secure with A.I. Face ID technology. Instantly unlock your G35 with just a glance. It's fast, easy, and secure.
Its limitations are substantial but predictable. The display is HD+ rather than a sharper Full HD+ OLED panel, and the phone has only 4GB of RAM. That combination makes it a poor fit for demanding games, photography-heavy users, or anyone planning to keep the device for many years.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It should be viewed as an inexpensive replacement, not a direct competitor to the Pixel 8a. Confirm the exact Motorola model’s update policy before purchase, because support terms vary by model and region.
Best for gaming and fast charging: OnePlus 12R
The OnePlus 12R was the strongest performance choice among the main 2024 value phones. Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 5,500mAh battery, 6.78-inch AMOLED display, and 80W wired charging made it particularly attractive for gaming, demanding apps, and buyers who dislike waiting for a charge.
It belongs in the affordable-flagship category, not the under-$300 category. Its large size may be uncomfortable for one-handed use, and its camera system was less versatile than the Pixel’s. Paying more for the 12R buys speed, endurance, and charging convenience—not flagship-level camera performance or compact design.
Choose it if: gaming and sustained performance are more important than camera versatility, and the higher price fits your budget.
Which affordable phone is best for each priority?
- Best camera: Pixel 8a, particularly for computational photography and difficult lighting.
- Best battery capacity: OnePlus 12R at 5,500mAh; the A35, Phone 2a, CMF Phone 1, and Moto G Stylus each use 5,000mAh batteries. Real endurance varies with brightness, signal, refresh rate, and workload.
- Fastest charging: OnePlus 12R at 80W, followed by Nothing Phone 2a at 45W. Check whether a charger is included before assuming the rated speed is usable out of the box.
- Best display: Galaxy A35 for a large AMOLED panel; Pixel 8a, Phone 2a, and CMF Phone 1 also offer OLED-class displays. The Moto G 5G’s 120Hz LCD is smoother than 60Hz, but refresh rate alone does not determine display quality.
- Best long-term ownership: Pixel 8a based on Google’s seven-year support commitment.
- Best expandable storage: Galaxy A35 or CMF Phone 1, both of which support microSD expansion.
- Best stylus: Moto G Stylus 5G (2024).
- Best strict-budget option: Moto G 5G (2024), provided your needs are basic.
What “affordable” should mean
There is no single useful price ceiling. In 2024, the tiers looked broadly like this:
Best Value
- Seamless Connectivity with Dual SIM Flexibility** – This 4G unlocked smartphone is designed to work flawlessly with T-Mobile LTE and Wi-Fi Calling networks. It's also compatible with popular virtual carriers like Metro by T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile, Tello, Boost Mobile, and more. For detailed compatibility with your carrier's Bring Your Own Device program, it's best to consult with them directly. Please note, this device is not compatible with AT&T, Cricket, or CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint. Nano SIM cards are sold separately.
- Experience Luxury on a Bigger Screen** – The expansive 6.79” HD+ display delivers stunning visuals with deep contrasts and vibrant colors, transforming every video, game, or photo into a visually compelling experience. Perfect for those who demand more from their screens.
- Massive Storage for All Your Essentials** – With a generous 128GB of internal storage and support for an additional 512GB via MicroSD (sold separately), you have more than enough space to store everything that matters – from photos and videos to documents and apps. Say goodbye to the frustration of running out of storage.
- Blazing Fast Performance for All Your Needs** – Powered by 6GB of RAM and a powerful Octa-Core processor, experience seamless multitasking and lightning-fast responsiveness. Enjoy gaming, streaming, and browsing with zero lag and crystal-clear calls wherever you go.
- Unleash Your Inner Photographer** – The 50MP AI camera system is engineered to capture life's most beautiful moments with breathtaking clarity and detail. From perfect selfies to stunning landscapes, every photo will look like a work of art.
- Under $200: basic communication, streaming, navigation, and light photography.
- $200–$350: the strongest balance of display, battery, performance, storage, and camera quality.
- $350–$500: premium midrange phones that can feel close to flagships in everyday use.
- $500–$600: value performance phones such as the OnePlus 12R. These may be inexpensive relative to flagship phones but are not cheap for every household.
Do not let a carrier’s “free phone” label redefine the price. The offer may require a qualifying unlimited plan, trade-in, new line, monthly bill credits, or continued service for the entire installment period. Compare the total cost of the device and required service, not just the advertised monthly payment.
How to tell whether a new phone is actually an upgrade
Before buying, compare the proposed phone with your current device in the areas that affect daily use:
- Current Android or iOS version and remaining security support
- Battery health and real-world endurance
- 5G, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, and eSIM compatibility
- Low-light camera quality and video stabilization
- Storage capacity and microSD support
- Charging speed and whether the charger is included
- Screen brightness, resolution, contrast, and refresh rate
- Warranty, repair availability, and water-resistance rating
A newer phone can still feel worse if it has less storage, a dimmer screen, weaker cameras, slower charging, shorter support, or poorer cellular compatibility. A refurbished previous-generation flagship may also be a better upgrade than a new entry-level phone—but only after checking its battery guarantee, IMEI status, carrier lock, return period, warranty, and remaining software support.
Buying checklist for U.S. shoppers
- Confirm the exact model. U.S. and international variants can have different bands, software, warranty coverage, and certifications.
- Check carrier compatibility. Verify 4G LTE and 5G bands, Verizon certification if relevant, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, and eSIM support.
- Choose enough storage. 128GB may suit light users but can fill quickly with games, 4K video, offline streaming, and several years of photos.
- Separate physical RAM from memory expansion. “Virtual RAM” uses storage and is not equivalent to additional physical memory.
- Confirm the update policy. Pixel and Galaxy commitments are not interchangeable with shorter CMF or model-specific Motorola policies.
- Check the box contents. The CMF Phone 1 did not include a charger; other phones may also omit one.
- Calculate the real price. Distinguish launch MSRP, dated sale price, financing, trade-in value, activation requirements, and bill credits.
- Review returns and warranty. This is especially important for imported Nothing or CMF phones and third-party refurbished devices.
- Use exact water-resistance language. Check the model’s IP rating. Water resistance is not permanent, does not cover every type of liquid damage, and may be affected by repairs.
New, refurbished, or last year’s flagship?
A refurbished flagship can offer a better camera, processor, haptics, water resistance, or build quality than a new budget phone. A discounted previous-generation Pixel or Galaxy S model may also outperform a newer low-cost handset.
The trade-off is remaining support. An older flagship may have a shorter update window than a newer Pixel 8a or Galaxy A35. For any used or refurbished phone, check the battery-health guarantee, warranty, return policy, IMEI status, carrier lock, storage, and exact software-support end date.
Final recommendation
The Pixel 8a was the strongest all-purpose 2024 choice because its camera quality and seven-year support commitment addressed the two areas that matter most over a long ownership period. Choose the Galaxy A35 5G when it is meaningfully cheaper and you value its larger AMOLED display, battery, microSD slot, and Samsung ecosystem. Choose the Moto G 5G only when staying under $200 is the overriding priority, and choose the OnePlus 12R when gaming and charging speed justify moving beyond the conventional budget range.
