If a seller shipped you the wrong product and refuses to pay return postage, you are not automatically out of options, but you also cannot assume the seller must pay. Whether you get a prepaid label depends on the seller’s written return policy, any marketplace buyer-protection process, your payment method, and your state’s law. No federal rule in the consumer guidance reviewed here makes every seller pay return shipping in every wrong-item case.
Your strongest position comes from three things: complete records of what you ordered and what arrived, a specific written request for one defined remedy, and a payment dispute opened before the deadline on your card statement runs out. The FTC guidance cited below is its April 2023 online-shopping alert; confirm current wording on the agency sites before relying on any exact phrasing.
What the rules do and do not require
Three sources shape the answer. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance tells shoppers to check three things before buying: whether the seller states that a full-refund return is available, who pays return shipping, the return deadline, and whether a restocking fee applies. Those terms are set by the seller, so they are the first thing to read.
The federal Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule covers most orders placed by mail, online, or phone. It is mainly about shipping. Sellers must ship within the time they state or, if they state none, generally within 30 days. If they cannot meet that promise, they must notify you and offer a choice: accept the delay or cancel for a refund. The FTC’s guidance cautions that the federal protections it describes may not get you a refund for non-delivery or for a wrong item. The rule is not a universal return-postage requirement.

Step 1: Document what arrived before you touch the box
Do this before you repackage anything. Sellers who dispute a wrong-item claim often ask whether the buyer can show what was ordered and what was shipped.

- The order confirmation email and a dated screenshot of the product listing, including the product name, SKU or item number, and price.
- Your receipt or card statement line showing the charge.
- Photos of the outer box, the shipping label, and the packing slip, if one is included.
- Photos of the wrong item, including any model number, serial number, or label, and a side-by-side photo of the listing image where it helps.
- Every message with the seller, saved in the platform’s message history or in email.
The FTC says receipts and confirmation emails can help consumers seek money back or dispute a credit-card charge.
Step 2: Write a specific request, not a complaint
A clear request is more likely to get a fast answer than a general complaint. Use the seller’s order-message system or email so the exchange is saved. Avoid phone-only contact for the first request.

- Give the order number, the date you ordered, the item you ordered (name and SKU), and the item you received.
- Attach your photos and state the date the package arrived.
- Name one remedy you will accept: a prepaid return label plus a correct replacement, a prepaid return label plus a full refund, or a refund if the seller agrees you can keep or discard the item.
- Set a reply deadline, such as seven days. That deadline is a practical suggestion you choose, not a legal period.
- If the seller refuses or does not answer, ask in writing for a manager or supervisor review. The FTC recommends explaining the problem, stating the resolution you want, and escalating to a manager when needed.
Step 3: Compare the remedies before you ship anything
The three remedies carry different costs and risks. Compare them before you agree to return the item.

The sources establish that return policies differ. They do not establish one preferred remedy for every buyer, so choose based on the price of the item, how urgently you need the correct product, and how much postage you are willing to absorb.

Step 4: If you must ship the item back
- Do not send anything until you have the return instructions in writing, including the address and any return authorization number the seller’s policy requires.
- Use a service that provides tracking and, if the item is valuable, insurance up to its declared value.
- Keep the receipt for the postage, the tracking number, and photos of the packed box.
- Include the order number and a short note stating that the item is being returned because it was the wrong product.
Step 5: Open a payment dispute before the deadline
If the seller will not resolve the problem, contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly. The FTC states that a consumer charged for a wrong or defective item may be able to dispute the charge with a credit-card issuer. Under the CFPB’s guidance on credit-card billing errors, written notice is due within 60 days after the charge first appears on the statement. Confirm the process directly with your issuer, because the steps and protections depend on the card and the circumstances.
Bring the seller correspondence and your photos to the dispute. Tell the issuer what happened in plain terms: what you ordered, what arrived, and what you asked the seller to do.

Step 6: Escalate if the seller still refuses
- State consumer protection office. Useful when the seller appears deceptive or the complaint stays unresolved. USAGov advises trying the seller or website first, then turning to the state office or the FTC for scams and suspicious communications.
- FTC complaint. The FTC has stated that it does not resolve individual complaints. A report supports enforcement and helps the agency spot patterns, but it will not award you a refund or a return label.
- Small-claims court. The FTC describes small claims as an option to explore locally. Filing fees, claim limits, and procedures vary by state and county. Weigh the item price and postage cost against the time involved.
Facts that change the answer
- Whose error it was. A seller shipping the wrong product is a different situation from a buyer who chose the wrong listing. If you selected the wrong item, the seller may have no obligation to cover postage.
- The marketplace. If you bought through a marketplace, its buyer-protection process may set a claim window and return process that override your general approach.
- Your state. State consumer law and small-claims rules can change the options. For a high-value dispute, check your state attorney general or consumer protection office for jurisdiction-specific guidance.
