CoinDesk 20 (CD20) is a benchmark index designed to track 20 qualifying digital assets. It is not a coin, fund, or promise of safer investing: its constituents are screened for eligibility, selected using liquidity and market-capitalization rules, then weighted by market cap subject to concentration caps. CoinDesk Indices calculates the index in real time, while reviewing its constituents quarterly.
What is the CoinDesk 20 Index?
CoinDesk Indices describes CoinDesk 20 as a “broad-based index that measures the performance of top digital assets.” Its methodology, dated July 7, 2026, targets 20 assets that meet classification, market-data, custody, and liquidity requirements. CoinDesk says the benchmark is designed with liquidity, diversification, and implementation in mind and intended as a reference for trading and investment-product construction. Those are design aims, not evidence that the index is low-risk or suitable for any particular investor. CoinDesk Indices: CoinDesk 20
The index launched on January 12, 2024, and uses October 4, 2022, as its base date. CoinDesk says it calculates and publishes CD20 every five seconds; the methodology describes real-time calculation using CoinDesk Benchmark Rates. CoinDesk: CoinDesk 20 index information
Which assets can qualify?
The eligible universe begins with assets among the 250 largest by market capitalization, excluding stablecoins. An asset also needs support for an applicable CoinDesk Benchmark Rate, which has its own exchange-eligibility and liquidity requirements. The methodology excludes wrapped, pegged, or staked assets; gas tokens as defined in the methodology; memecoins; privacy tokens; and assets meeting its policy definition of unregistered securities. The committee may relax eligibility criteria if too few assets qualify. CoinDesk 20 methodology, July 7, 2026

Eligibility is not the same as inclusion. Passing the initial filters only makes an asset a candidate for the selection process; it does not guarantee a place in the index.
How are the 20 constituents selected?
At each quarterly reconstitution, the methodology ranks candidates using 90-day median daily value traded (MDVT). Trading volume is aggregated from USD and USDC pairs on centralized digital-asset exchanges contributing to the relevant reference rate. The selection process then uses separate candidate pools for current members and non-members:
- Build the ranked pools. Take the top 40 ranked non-constituents and top 50 ranked current constituents.
- Apply custody support. Remove assets not supported by Coinbase Custody Trust Company.
- Rank survivors by market capitalization. Select the top 15 assets first.
- Apply the retention buffer. Current constituents that rank within the top 25 can be retained to reduce turnover.
- Fill remaining places. Use the highest-ranked eligible non-constituents until the target count is reached.
Because the process includes a buffer for existing members, a current constituent can remain even when a new asset ranks above it in part of the selection process. The rules are not simply “take the 20 biggest coins.” CoinDesk 20 methodology, July 7, 2026

How are index weights calculated?
CD20 uses market-capitalization weighting, not equal weighting. At reconstitution, weights are capped iteratively: the largest uncapped constituent is reduced to 30% if it exceeds that level, and the excess is redistributed among uncapped assets in proportion to market capitalization. Any remaining constituent above 20% is then reduced to 20%, with the excess redistributed by the same method. The process repeats until every remaining constituent is at or below 20%. CoinDesk 20 methodology, July 7, 2026
The methodology locks in the circulating-supply values used on the weighting reference date through adjustment factors. Since prices continue moving before the effective date, weights can drift during that interval. The caps limit concentration at reconstitution; they do not prevent losses, eliminate volatility, or guarantee a particular risk profile.
How does the index value change?
In simplified terms, the calculation combines each constituent’s CoinDesk Benchmark Rate price, circulating supply fixed at the weighting reference date, and weighting adjustment factor, then divides by an index divisor. The divisor is adjusted at reconstitution and for certain non-price-driven changes so that a change in index composition does not itself create an artificial jump in index value. When does CoinDesk 20 change its constituents?
CoinDesk 20 is reviewed and reconstituted quarterly. Its effective dates fall on the last business day of January, April, July, and October. Changes are announced about four weeks before implementation. The methodology sets a reference date for selection data, an announcement date, and a weighting reference date seven calendar days before the effective date—or the closest following business day. Changes take effect at 4 p.m. Eastern Time. CoinDesk 20 methodology, July 7, 2026

That listing establishes the announcement date, but not the detailed additions, deletions, or weights.
