Polygon PoS is an Ethereum-compatible network where users can swap, lend, provide liquidity, and stake. Its current native gas and staking token is POL, not MATIC. The MATIC-to-POL migration is generally 1:1, with the required action depending on where the tokens are held.
Polygon is also an ecosystem rather than a single chain. For most new DeFi activity, the relevant destination is Polygon PoS. Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta stopped producing blocks after its sequencer was sunset on July 3, 2026, so it should not be treated as a normal destination for new DeFi transactions.

What is Polygon?
Polygon is a group of Ethereum-scaling and interoperability technologies. The distinction between its components matters because they have different tokens, bridges, applications, and operational risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Polygon PoS: The main Polygon network discussed in this guide. It is EVM-compatible and uses POL for gas and staking.
- Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta: Its sequencer was sunset on July 3, 2026, and the network stopped producing blocks. Qualifying wallet-held assets may be handled through Polygon’s claims process, but assets locked in DeFi contracts are not recoverable through the general claims interface. See Polygon’s sunset guidance.
- Agglayer: Polygon’s interoperability layer for connected chains, cross-chain messaging, bridge operations, and a potential shared-liquidity model.
- Polygon CDK: Developer infrastructure for launching Polygon-related chains. It is not itself a consumer DeFi application.
- POL: Polygon PoS’s current native gas and staking token.
- MATIC: The legacy token name being replaced by POL.
Polygon describes Polygon PoS as an Ethereum-compatible sidechain and has stated plans for its evolution toward a ZK-based validium connected to Agglayer. That is a roadmap, not a completed feature. Technical details are available in the Polygon PoS documentation.

Why do DeFi users consider Polygon?
Polygon can often make Ethereum-style DeFi transactions less expensive than using Ethereum mainnet under ordinary conditions. That can matter when a strategy involves frequent swaps, collateral adjustments, liquidity management, or smaller position sizes.
Other practical advantages include:
- EVM compatibility, allowing familiar wallets and Ethereum-based application patterns.
- Established applications and existing liquidity.
- Broad support from wallets, developers, exchanges, and infrastructure providers.
- Lower transaction costs that may make experimentation or smaller transactions more economically practical.
“Often cheaper” does not mean “always cheaper.” Your total cost can include network gas, bridge fees, exchange fees, slippage, application fees, and Ethereum fees when moving funds onto or off the network. Polygon also does not remove smart-contract, bridge, oracle, liquidation, token, or governance risk.
What can you do on Polygon?
Swap tokens on decentralized exchanges
Decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap allow users to exchange tokens without handing custody to a centralized exchange. The price you receive depends on liquidity, trade size, routing, pool fees, and market movement.
Recommended Free Tools
Before confirming a swap, review:
- The expected output and minimum amount received.
- Slippage tolerance and estimated price impact.
- The exact token contract address.
- The liquidity available on Polygon PoS, rather than assuming that liquidity exists because the token is popular elsewhere.
The same ticker can represent different contracts on Ethereum, Polygon, and other networks. Verify addresses through the project’s official documentation or a trusted block explorer. A token being available on Polygon does not prove that it is official, liquid, or redeemable for its similarly named version elsewhere.
Lend and borrow
On lending protocols such as Aave, users can supply assets to earn variable interest or borrow against collateral. Current markets, rates, loan-to-value limits, and liquidation parameters change, so consult the application and Aave’s documentation rather than relying on a static table.
Important concepts include:
- Loan-to-value: How large a loan can be relative to deposited collateral.
- Health factor: A measure of how close a position is to liquidation.
- Utilization: Higher borrowing demand can increase variable rates and affect withdrawals.
- Liquidation penalty: The cost imposed when collateral is sold to repay debt.
A high supply APY may be temporary, incentive-driven, or dependent on high utilization. Borrowing against volatile collateral can result in liquidation after a price move, oracle update, interest-rate change, or collateral depeg.

Provide liquidity
Liquidity providers deposit token pairs into automated market-maker pools and receive a share of trading fees. Some pools also distribute incentive tokens.
The main risks are:
- Impermanent loss: The value of holding the assets separately may exceed the value of the pool position after their prices diverge.
- Concentrated-liquidity management: A position can move out of its selected price range and stop earning fees.
- Reward-token dilution: Incentives may fall in value or decline as emissions increase supply.
- Pool-specific contract risk: A reputable chain does not make every pool safe.
Fee APR is not the same as total return. Include impermanent loss, token-price changes, gas, slippage, and any management or performance fees when evaluating a position.
Use vaults and other yield strategies
Vaults can automate lending, liquidity provision, compounding, or other strategies. Staking, lending loops, and liquidity incentives are possible examples, not guaranteed-income products.
APY can be variable, based on a short observation period, paid in a volatile reward token, dependent on emissions, or reduced by fees and transaction costs. A strategy that looks attractive at one moment may become unprofitable when incentives, utilization, prices, or liquidity change.
Stake POL
POL is used for gas and staking on Polygon PoS. Delegating through the Polygon staking portal involves choosing a validator and accepting validator commissions, performance risks, withdrawal timing, and token-price volatility. Confirm the current interface and parameters before staking; do not treat staking yield as risk-free income.
How beginners can start safely
- Choose a self-custody wallet. MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rabby, and compatible hardware-wallet setups are common EVM options. Support differs by wallet, network, and application. Polygon Portal documentation lists support for MetaMask, Coinbase, OKX, and WalletConnect-compatible wallets: wallet guidance.
- Select Polygon PoS. Confirm the network name in the wallet. Do not confuse Polygon PoS with Ethereum, Polygon zkEVM, or another chain.
- Obtain POL for gas. Holding USDC or another asset on Polygon is not enough to transact. You need POL on Polygon PoS to pay fees. Check the destination network, token standard, and address before sending; test with a small amount first.
- Move funds using a suitable route. You may use an exchange withdrawal, a canonical bridge, Polygon Portal, or a third-party route. Compare fees, finality, claim requirements, wrapped-token representations, and application support.
- Approve the token. Many applications require a separate approval transaction before a swap, supply, or deposit. Approval authorizes a contract to spend the specified token; it does not itself complete the intended transaction. Avoid counterfeit contracts and unnecessary unlimited approvals.
- Make a small test transaction. Confirm the chain, token, spender, recipient, expected output, and minimum received. Inspect the transaction hash on a block explorer before committing a larger amount.
Polygon Portal supports bridging, swapping, and monitoring, but its documentation notes that the native bridge does not directly bridge tokens between Polygon PoS and Polygon zkEVM. Use the official Portal and check the current route rather than assuming that every Polygon-branded network is directly connected.

MATIC versus POL: what the transition means
As of August 18, 2026, POL—not MATIC—is Polygon PoS’s native gas and staking token. Polygon’s documentation describes a 1:1 migration and an initial POL supply of 10 billion, matching MATIC on that basis. It also describes an effective 2% annual emission after June 2025, subject to governance and contract limits. See the migration guide and POL documentation.
The correct action depends on where MATIC is held:
- MATIC on Polygon PoS: Polygon says it was automatically converted to POL at a 1:1 ratio.
- MATIC on Ethereum: You may need to use the official migration interface and approve the migration contract. Use links from Polygon’s documentation, not search advertisements.
- MATIC on Polygon zkEVM: Do not apply generic migration instructions. Because zkEVM Mainnet Beta has sunset, follow the current recovery guidance for that network.
- MATIC on a centralized exchange: Exchange handling varies. Check the exchange’s current notice for conversion, deposits, withdrawals, and trading-pair support.
- MATIC in a DeFi contract, pool, vault, wrapper, or LP position: Verify the specific application’s migration treatment. Do not send old MATIC to a POL contract or assume every wrapped representation is interchangeable.
Agglayer and cross-chain DeFi
Agglayer is intended to connect Polygon-related and other participating chains through unified bridging, cross-chain messaging, cryptographic verification, and a framework that preserves chain sovereignty. Polygon presents shared liquidity and atomic cross-chain operations as important objectives.
At a high level, the Unified Bridge records bridge activity in exit trees. Users can make claims using cryptographic proofs, while cross-chain messages can trigger contract calls on another chain. Polygon’s pessimistic-proof model is designed to limit how much a compromised connected chain can withdraw. The relevant technical references cover exit-tree data structures, asset bridging, and message bridging.
That architecture is not a blanket safety guarantee. Agglayer cannot eliminate application bugs, phishing, malicious front ends, compromised keys, weak connected chains, liquidity shortages, or every bridge failure. “Unified liquidity” is an ecosystem design objective and capability, not a promise that every asset has deep liquidity everywhere.
Developer reference
Developers should use audited contracts and current documentation rather than copying signatures into production without review. Polygon’s documentation gives these reference functions:
function bridgeAsset(
uint32 destinationNetwork,
address destinationAddress,
uint256 amount,
address token,
bool forceUpdateGlobalExitRoot,
bytes calldata permitData
) external payable
function bridgeMessage(
uint32 destinationNetwork,
address destinationAddress,
uint256 gasLimit,
bytes calldata data
) external payable
Ordinary users should use an official interface or an audited application, not call bridge contracts directly.

Polygon PoS versus Ethereum and other networks
Polygon PoS may suit frequent or smaller transactions when the desired application has adequate liquidity. Ethereum mainnet may be preferable for users prioritizing deep base-layer liquidity, settlement reputation, or assets that are native there. Other Ethereum scaling networks, including Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, should be compared using current liquidity, stablecoin depth, DEX execution, lending availability, bridge design, gas-token requirements, withdrawal behavior, upgrade controls, and application support.

Risks to assess before using Polygon DeFi
- Smart-contract risk: Bugs, exploits, upgradeable contracts, administrator keys, and emergency controls can affect funds.
- Bridge risk: Bridges and cross-chain routes introduce additional contracts, proofs, validators, interfaces, and possible claim delays.
- Token risk: Native and bridged versions may have different issuers, redemption assumptions, liquidity, blacklists, or depeg histories.
- Oracle risk: Incorrect or delayed prices can cause bad trades or inappropriate liquidations.
- Liquidity risk: Thin pools create price impact and may make exits difficult.
- Liquidation risk: Borrowing positions can be liquidated after price, collateral, rate, or oracle changes.
- Governance risk: Token holders, multisigs, or administrators may change parameters or upgrade contracts.
- Operational risk: Wrong-network transfers, missing POL for gas, stuck bridge transactions, and unsupported wallet integrations are common sources of loss.
- Phishing risk: Fake migration pages, bridge clones, token contracts, and wallet prompts can look legitimate.
A practical Polygon DeFi checklist
Protocol
- Is the contract verified and the code publicly available?
- Are audits, bug bounties, and past incidents documented?
- Who controls upgrades, pause functions, and emergency withdrawals?
- What oracle sources are used?
- How long has the protocol operated under meaningful usage?
Market
- Check current TVL, volume, liquidity depth, slippage, utilization, and incentive dependence.
- Review stablecoin composition and whether liquidity is concentrated in a few pools or providers.
- Use DeFiLlama’s Polygon dashboard for discovery and trend monitoring, not as proof of safety.
Token
- Verify the official contract address.
- Identify whether the asset is native, wrapped, or bridged.
- Check redemption mechanics, depeg history, emissions, unlocks, governance concentration, and transfer restrictions.
- Confirm that the exact asset is supported by the chosen protocol.
Your situation
- Size positions so a total loss would not compromise essential finances.
- Consider how quickly you may need to exit.
- Keep records for tax reporting and understand the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
- Use a hardware wallet for meaningful balances if you can securely manage the recovery phrase and signing workflow.
- Reassess positions regularly; variable rates, incentives, liquidity, and contract risks change.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
Wrong network
If funds do not appear, first check the transaction hash, destination chain, token contract, and wallet network. Do not immediately send another transaction. Recovery may depend on whether the receiving address and application support that chain.
No POL for gas
A wallet can display tokens while being unable to approve, swap, or withdraw them. Obtain a small amount of POL on Polygon PoS through a verified route.
Stale bridge transaction
Check the source-chain event, transaction status, destination-chain status, and whether a claim is required. Use the bridge’s official support documentation. Never enter a recovery phrase into a support form.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Malicious approval
If you approved a suspicious contract, stop interacting with the site, review token allowances through a reputable allowance-management tool, and revoke unnecessary permissions. Revocation itself requires POL and does not reverse transfers that already occurred.
Polygon zkEVM sunset
Do not assume that assets are recoverable simply because they are visible in a wallet. Polygon’s claims process applies to qualifying wallet-held assets; Polygon explicitly excludes funds locked in DeFi contracts, multisigs, or third-party bridges from recovery through that general interface. Follow the official sunset announcement and current claims guidance.
Bottom line
Polygon can be a practical DeFi venue when lower transaction costs, EVM compatibility, and suitable Polygon PoS liquidity fit your needs. Use the current vocabulary—POL for Polygon PoS gas and staking, not MATIC—and verify every network and token contract. Lower fees improve convenience and sometimes strategy economics, but they do not make a protocol, bridge, token, or yield opportunity safe by default.
