The 22 finalist teams presented concepts spanning agriculture, carbon capture, plastics, solar power and marine data, with reported awards ranging from $2,500 to $15,000. Those entries were proposals—not proof of commercially ready products or independently verified environmental results.
What the Environmental Innovation Challenge asks students to do
The Buerk Center’s competition brings together interdisciplinary student teams to identify an environmental problem, develop a solution, build a prototype, prepare a business plan that demonstrates market potential, and pitch to judges at a demo-day event. The center describes environmental innovation broadly: it can be a product, process or service intended to reduce waste, minimize energy use or contribute to a healthier planet.
That mix of technical and business work matters. Teams are expected to explain not only what their idea might do, but also how it could become a viable venture. The competition format does not, by itself, establish that a prototype works at scale, that customers will adopt it or that its environmental benefits have been measured.
Five 2024 winning concepts and their awards

|---|---|---|
| AgroFilms | A biodegradable film made from hemp waste, intended to cover agricultural fields and reduce evaporation of irrigation water. | $15,000 Grand Prize |
| C-1 Bio | Engineered aquatic bacteria intended to convert carbon dioxide into precursor chemicals for industrial uses. | $10,000 second-place prize and $2,500 climate-impact prize |
| Minimycelium | A mushroom-based approach intended to break plastic down into non-toxic organic matter, with edible mushrooms and nutrient-rich compost as outputs. | $5,000 third-place prize |
| SuperSurya | Technology intended to improve residential photovoltaic-panel energy efficiency. | $5,000 Clean Energy Prize |
| SEAPEN | An AI platform intended to analyze existing marine images and video for wildlife, pollution and vegetation data. | $2,500 Innovation in Oceanography Prize |
These are descriptions of the teams’ concepts reported by GeekWire, not independent assessments of performance. The available reporting does not establish prototype maturity, measured impact, commercial readiness or the feasibility of scaling any of the approaches.
Who can enter and what teams prepare
The Buerk Center’s eligibility description covers undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at degree-seeking programs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Alaska. The application listing says at least one team member must be a qualifying student and that the venture must be developed during the student’s time at the institution.

The listing describes a 5–7 page business summary and a 60-second pitch for finalist teams. These are details in the application listing; they should not be read as confirmation that a scheduled event took place.
2026 status: official pages say paused, while other listings show a schedule
The Buerk Center and the UW Clean Energy Institute state that the 2026 challenge is paused because of funding constraints. A UW political science department announcement dated February 5, 2026, and the application listing, however, describe a 2026 application process and an April 2 final round. The sources do not establish whether that event ultimately proceeded, so the 2026 schedule should not be treated as a completed competition.

The 2024 results show the range of environmental startup ideas students brought to a judged pitch competition. They do not show that the winning entries became operating businesses, that their technologies delivered the proposed benefits, or that they outperformed other approaches. Evaluating those claims would require evidence such as independent performance data, lifecycle or environmental-impact analysis, customer adoption and scale-up results—none of which is established by the short descriptions of the 2024 entries.
GeekWire named Alaska Airlines, Microsoft and the UW Clean Energy Institute as main sponsors of the 2024 event. The competition’s stated purpose and reported awards are therefore best understood as support for student venture development, not as endorsements or certifications of each project’s eventual impact.
