United had the bigger fleet on the latest comparable reported date in the available 2026 filings. As of June 30, United reported 1,122 mainline and 430 regional aircraft, while Delta reported 1,004 mainline and 325 regional aircraft. Counting both categories, that is 1,552 for United and 1,329 for Delta—a difference of 223 aircraft.
United vs. Delta fleet size in 2026
The comparison below uses aircraft counts for June 30, 2026. United reported its figures in a July 15 investor update; Delta reported its figures in its second-quarter Form 10-Q. Combined totals and the difference are calculated by adding each airline’s mainline and regional counts.
| Airline and status | Mainline aircraft | Regional aircraft | Combined aircraft |
|---|---|---|---|
| United, reported June 30, 2026 | 1,122 | 430 | 1,552 |
| Delta, reported June 30, 2026 | 1,004 | 325 | 1,329 |
| United, year-end 2026 estimate published July 15 | 1,173 | 442 | 1,615 |
United led on both measures: its mainline count exceeded Delta’s by 118 aircraft, and its regional count exceeded Delta’s by 105. Together, those component differences make the calculated combined lead 223 aircraft. The year-end estimate is not an actual fleet count.
What the fleet counts include
Mainline aircraft are listed separately from regional aircraft in United’s update. Delta’s filing likewise lists its mainline fleet separately and then identifies aircraft operated by regional carriers on Delta’s behalf. The combined comparison adds those categories for each carrier, rather than comparing one airline’s mainline-only total with another airline’s combined total.

These figures answer which airline has more aircraft on the stated reporting date. They do not establish which carrier has greater passenger capacity, more seats, serves more destinations, or carries more passengers; those are different comparisons.
United’s projected year-end count is not a reported result
United’s July 15 investor update estimated 1,173 mainline and 442 regional aircraft at year-end 2026, or 1,615 combined. The company said the figures reflect current expectations for future delivery dates, which are subject to change. Treat 1,615 as a forecast, not as a verified December 31 fleet count or a like-date comparison with Delta.

How fleet plans could affect future counts
United’s 2025 Form 10-K said the airline expected to take delivery of more than 630 new narrowbody and widebody aircraft by the end of 2034 under United Next. The filing cautioned that delivery timing and commitments may change, so this long-term plan does not mean those aircraft are already in the fleet.
Delta’s June 2026 Form 10-Q also describes aircraft orders and commitments, with deliveries for several newly announced orders scheduled to begin in 2029 or 2031. Those planned deliveries should not be counted as part of Delta’s June 30, 2026 fleet.
