The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) reported that 82% of members who voted approved the agreement, with 88.85% participation among eligible members. The deal includes an average 31% base-pay increase and $741 million in retroactive pay, according to the union.
How the March talks led to ratification
The “make-or-break week” was the final four-day mediated bargaining round in Washington, D.C., in March 2026—not the end of the contract process. United and AFA-CWA announced a tentative agreement on March 26. United said it covered about 30,000 flight attendants and required member ratification. AFA United’s bargaining updates and United’s announcement documented the tentative deal.

- March 26: United and the union announced a tentative agreement, subject to a membership vote.
- May 12: Members ratified the agreement. AFA United reported 88.85% eligible-member participation and an 82% yes vote.
What the new contract provides
AFA United reported an average 31% increase in base pay and $741 million in retroactive pay. The union’s bargaining update also described improved base-pay rates, restrictions on red-eye flying, sit pay for scheduled and rescheduled sits lasting more than 2.5 hours, and improved hotel and electronic-notification language. Those terms address both compensation and day-to-day working conditions.
The Associated Press reported additional provisions, including boarding pay, higher retirement contributions, 10 weeks of paid parental leave, and elimination of 24-hour on-call reserve schedules. AFA United president Ken Diaz said in the ratification announcement, “This Contract brings meaningful change to United Flight Attendants.”

How long the agreement lasts
United said the contract would become amendable after five years if ratified. “Amendable” means the contract can be reopened for negotiation at that point; it does not mean that its provisions automatically expire on that date. United’s statement described the deal as a five-year contract.

What the vote means for flight attendants
Ratification settled the immediate dispute by approving the tentative deal, rather than leaving the March negotiations unresolved. For flight attendants, the agreement’s reported terms combine higher base pay and retroactive compensation with changes to boarding and sit pay, scheduling, leave, retirement contributions, and reserve rules. The total value to an individual will depend on the applicable pay rates and contract provisions; the announced average increase is not a guarantee that every worker’s pay rises by exactly 31%.
