The most-cited figures come from two different measures. The “more than 1,000” delay count is AP’s reporting of the event. The percentages come from FlightAware, a flight-tracking service, and were reported by AP for Wednesday, August 6. The table separates these figures so they are not blended together.

None of these numbers is United’s final official count. Because the percentages describe one day’s snapshot, they also do not capture the residual disruption that continued into August 7.

The contemporaneous AP report identifies the affected system and its effects, but it says the technical cause was unclear. United told AP the disruption was unrelated to recent airline cybersecurity concerns, and the reporting does not describe the event as a cyberattack.

What United and the FAA said
United apologized and said it was working to resolve the outage. In an emailed statement quoted by AP, the airline said: “Safety is our top priority, and we’ll work with our customers to get them to their destinations.” Its public apology, also quoted by AP, read: “Hey there, we apologize for the travel disruption today.” These are organizational statements; the reporting does not attribute a quote about this outage to a named executive.
United said it would pay hotel and other expenses in some applicable cases. The reporting does not say every affected traveler qualified, and the airline’s criteria are not described in the coverage. AP reported that the FAA was aware of the disruption, offered support, and stayed in contact with United during recovery.

Practical steps if you were affected
The FAA does not investigate individual delay inquiries, and it directs travelers to their airline and to airport status resources for flight-specific information. For a disruption of this kind, the steps below are the ones that matter for your money.
- Check your booking status first. Use the airline’s app or website and the departure airport’s status page; the FAA points travelers to these sources.
- Keep every receipt. Hotel, meal, and transport costs are the expenses United said it would cover in some applicable cases, so documentation is what lets you make a claim.
- Ask about a refund if your flight was canceled or significantly changed. A November 2025 DOT notice, written about a different situation (a government-shutdown flight-reduction), states that refund obligations for a canceled or significantly changed flight continue regardless of cause. It does not rule on passenger eligibility for this August 2025 outage, so treat it as the general rule, not a confirmed remedy for this event.
- Do not assume you are covered. The reporting describes discretionary expense support in some cases only. Confirm the terms with United before you book non-refundable costs on the basis of a reimbursement.
What this incident does and does not establish
The incident shows how one internal system can ripple through flight planning, weight and balance, and tracking, and then through airports. It does not establish how the outage started, whether it could recur, or the full number of affected travelers.
