The “45” in the headline “United Airlines Unlocks 45 Routes For Passengers With Flight To New U.S. Destination” does not refer to 45 new routes or to a new U.S. destination. In the United Airlines winter schedule announcement dated September 4, 2025, 45 is the number of daily flights United said it would operate to Orlando. The same announcement added flights to 15 cities and two new domestic routes, but it did not add a new U.S. destination.
Two details matter before you use any of these numbers. The additions were announced to start January 6, 2026, a date that has already passed, so the only way to confirm that a flight is running today is to check United’s live schedule. And the figures come from United’s own release, not from an independent audit.
What the 45 actually measures
United’s release stated its post-expansion daily flight counts for three markets. These are totals of daily flights, not counts of routes:

A reader who sees “45” next to “routes” may assume United opened 45 new city pairs. That reading is wrong. A route is a pair of cities. A daily frequency is how many times a day a route is flown. Adding one flight per day to a market with many existing flights changes the total, but it does not create a new route.

The schedule additions
The expansion centred on extra frequency in existing markets. United described the changes as one additional daily roundtrip on each of the following city pairs:

The two new domestic routes
The release listed two genuinely new domestic routes, both from Newark/New York:

New Houston international service
Houston was the origin for three new international destinations, with the following weekly frequencies as announced:

These are the only additions in the release that involve destinations new to the Houston schedule. They are international, so they do not count toward the “new U.S. destination” in the headline.

Why United said it added the flights
Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of Global Network Planning and Alliances, gave the rationale in the September 4, 2025 release: “If Spirit suddenly goes out of business it will be incredibly disruptive, so we’re adding these flights to give their customers other options if they want or need them.” The statement presents the additions as a contingency for Spirit Airlines customers in case that carrier failed. It does not state that Spirit was closing, and it should not be read as a forecast of Spirit’s finances.
How to compare these additions
If you are weighing whether an added flight is useful for a trip, four distinctions matter more than the headline number:

- New route or extra frequency. Only the two Newark/New York routes are new city pairs; the rest add frequency to existing markets.
- Domestic or international. The Central American flights from Houston are international; the Newark routes are domestic.
- Origin market. The additions cluster at Houston, Chicago, Newark/New York and Los Angeles.
- Daily or weekly. The domestic additions are daily roundtrips; the Houston international flights are weekly.
Checking whether a flight is bookable now
Because the release described plans, not a permanent schedule, confirm each flight before you rely on it for a budget or itinerary:
- Open United’s website at united.com and select the flight search.
- Enter the origin and destination airports and the travel dates you are considering.
- Confirm that the flight appears on those dates and note the scheduled departure time.
- Compare the total fare, including any checked-bag and seat charges, against a fare for a similar flight on a different date or airport.
- Keep a screenshot or confirmation of the fare you select, since prices change.
If you saw a different “45 routes” claim
If the headline you saw refers to a different United announcement, check the airline’s newsroom for its date and full text before repeating a route count or destination. The September 4, 2025 release is the closest official match to the 45 figure, and it does not support a claim of 45 new routes.
